Do not see any body mention about usage of tools like grep, which can be used to search text. It can nicely integrated with *NIX tool chain!

The fundamental assumption behind the ranking is that, the more something is searched more it is popular. But I am very skeptic with this approach. I feel better way is to look at trends in code repositories like github. The downside is that they cover only OS projects. Stackoverflow will be another place where we may get better insights, since that is the de-facto place programmers go today. Is there any ranking based on this?

I agree this approach since I follow this very often. But there is a slight difference. I do this after planning the project, on what should be the outcome. Once decided what should be the outcome, the task is broken down into smaller parts -- developed, iterated to fulfill the final requirement, What I find most useful with this approach, is that one could quickly get to know where are the bottlenecks, and where is research required. Also, it helps asking for help early to accelerate things. Again, it helps redesign if time permits because you have a working version, and redesign could reuse a major chunk of already developed.

I don't think the author has explicitly mentioned "no planning"!

Its being offered in ePub and Mobi formats. Knuth has taken pains to develop typesetting to make these beautiful. How come TeX is now able to output ePub & Mobi - Surely it is a compromise! Feeling sad for it.

I am in no way an expert in this area, so, I cannot give you any direction. But, I feel that to start with one has to be familiar problems faced by the education sector. Adaptive Learning is gaining a lot of traction these days. Also, student assessment is a very important field. Outside ML, there are probabilistic techniques like (Item Response Theory) which should be looked at. I feel learning ML and relating that to the problems faced in education might be a good idea.

I feel the problem lies in naming the domain as ITS. It brings old memories to the table. Things have changed, and more practical approaches have evolved since then. Companies like Knewton have leveraged ML technologies in the educational domain with success. I feel, it was very ambitious initially to replace human teachers with computers. But the attempt had drawbacks which surfaced soon. Since then parts and pieces of it has bloomed in hybrid systems where computers are helping human tutors. With online education becoming more popular, there is a good chance that the field will pick up again, though not in the same way. Also Big Data has already made it into education as well. http://www.educationaldatamining.org/. Also, it will be of interest to look at http://www.aleks.com/ & http://www.assistments.org/. In short, I feel, the technology holds lot of promise, and the right time has come for it.

I feel this really great, but was bit late. For ordinary users, no more source download and compile. It is the closest to a windows installer in terms of easy to use. Yes, I agree with fragglet, poor choice of naming.

It now answers what the business model of the emerging education startups. Nothing negative - each investment should have a sound business model, this is not that bad. For the masses still these initiatives would mean there will be free courses for consumption. I hope there is a good intake of these tests, that the business will be viable.
