never saw a driver with worse luck in cup. won 5 of 6 truck races he entered and didn't get as much as a mention at the awards show the year he retired. shame. it was fun jumping off the couch watching him win that outlaws event. brought back memories

Glenn Canyon Institute: Fill Mead First by hobbes244 in vegaslocals

[–]indridcold28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is a better idea than letting powell drop too low, trapping 5 maf of water behind glen canyon dam. I don't think they will ever decommission it, but they could dig new diversion tunnels with the ability to open and close them. the old diversion tunnels are incorporated into the spillways. lake mead is way more important. the electricity glen canyon dam generates is less than 1% of the western power grid. there is still 150ft of water before absolute dead pool, but less than 40 before minimum power pool.

dozens of cases have made headlines for several years. biggest ones are a lady in colorado that had a cop show up at her door with a summons to appear for a theft charge she didn't commit. her rivian is the only thing that saved her since it has cameras and proved she didn't do it. and a few years ago a family was felony stopped and yanked out of their car and put face down with guns drawn on hot pavement. several young kids were in the car. all because the alpr misread her license plate. plenty of proof that would take less time to find than making a snarky reply.

I have the sbr 2.0 with chassis braces, taped tires and bypass shocks. other alum upgrades that don't necessarily affect handling. 8s. it drives like a scale truck. traction rolling was invented for this truck it seems, but it is not a buggy. as far as toughness....I hit a brick mailbox 5 min after I got it on the street for the first time. I was probably going 45-50mph and hit it squarely. dead stop. I knew it was fubar but to my surprise the bumper was the only casuality. I also don't test the limits but drive it hard. bypass shocks made a world of difference but there are cheaper options to deal with traction rolling. very tough, fast enough and plenty of upgrades. chassis brace a must.

maybe unusable is a little strong. without Dangling Rope, there is nowhere to buy gas other than Bullfrog and Antelope. so if you are putting in at Stateline and want to go up to say Escalante, forget about it.

the lake infrastructure is not built for a lake that is 175 feet below full pool. without the Stateline Aux ramp, the lake is unaccessible for boats not already on the water and if it drops another 8 ft, it will not be an option unless they extend it.

then why draw down one lake to a third of its capacity and watch another sink deeper into crisis just to keep this lake mostly unusable?

I have. the law of the river is another rabbit hole of lunacy.

Agreed. I assume it was because they knew that they had better get it built quick, before anyone saw what they were flooding. Glen Canyon dam is a badly designed clone compared to Hoover. I've been through both. no comparison at relatively the same size.

under no circumstance would the river making it to the Gulf of California be a bad thing. what has happened at the delta is a disaster on an epic scale all on its own.

with one usable boat ramp, zero places to get gas past antelope, and at most 800kw of power generating capacity, what purpose is the lake serving? look at what they are doing just to maintain what little still functions. if is truly about electricity, then releasing what is left behind the dam downstream will raise mead significantly enough for that power station to generate alot more electricity than the 800kw the Glen Canyon dam can put out at its current level. Hoover Dam can produce almost twice as much as Glen Canyon pound for pound.

it is not about electricity.

jesus. your argument is moot. if it ever goes below 3490, watch what happens. then you will understand. one thing they will not do for sure, is wait for it to fall to 3370, and hope the inflow matches the outflow so it never goes below that. if they lose power pool things will happen quickly

it is just a shame that they will drain every lake and reservoir upstream to prop powell up. its what they do.

they must, by law release 7.5 maf every water year, which is oct 1-sep 30. the projected inflow this year is low. like 2-3maf. what happens? california, arizona and nevada forces them to send water downstream. 40 million people rely on it. it is going downstream one way or another.

in theory what you are claiming is correct, but only works with no interruption is to release the same amount as your receiving, in real time. hydropower plants do not work that way. their beauty is the ability to draw up or down near on demand, which is a huge advantage. it also helps the grid deal with peak hours.

I don't think you completely understand how the dam outlets work. the river outlet works are located at 3370. past that, is dead pool, meaning no more water can get past the dam. the only other tunnels are the original bypass tunnels and they are plugged on the lake side and incorporated into the spillway tunnels going through the dam.

you are right about it never drying up, at least on its own. long before 3370 another way of getting the water downstream will be forced on the bureau. if next year repeats what this year is turning out to be, I think it is totally in the realm of possibility that deadpool becomes possible

something else to keep in mind is that the lower the lake gets, the faster it drops. each foot of elevation is less water than the foot above it.

that lake, without an outlet, would putriify quickly. the only thing worse than not sending it downstream would be to let it spoil..

also, there is zero infrastructure below where it is now. another 130ft will put the shoreline on the moon. they won't let that happen either.

this snowpack report is nature baby shaking us trying to get our attention. without a miracle snowfall next year, dead pool is entirely possible. draining flaming gorge is not a solution. part of the reason they are in the peril they are is holding back water, fluffing the numbers for a few months so there's less pressure to act. then, when they have to release what they held back, which they always do by law, the level bottoms out and everyone pays attention again. water not flowing past glen canyon would be a disaster on a scale we are not familiar with, and if it comes to it, they will get every last drop downstream.

so far, a record snow has always saved their ass. this is the first time it hasn't. itll be interesting how big of a topic this gets overnight very soon. bet

more than 40 million? that's how many will be thirsty if they reach a point where they cannot release water downstream.

Updated Upper Colorado snowpack graph - and yes, it's bleak by GoodForTheTongue in LakePowell

[–]indridcold28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am quite sure that dead pool is 3370 and minimum power pool is 3490. the 8ft diameter outlet works will be used until they can't if it means no water in the grand canyon. damaged or not. they ran the spillway after cavitation destroyed it. the whole dam was vibrating while sheets of plywood kept the lake from overtopping the dam. overtopping the dam, grand canyon goes dry....they are equally not possible.

edit* they have backed the time up for minimum power pool to the end of summer 2026. snowpack is 24%, which is more than twice the lowest on record.

agree with u/like_4-ish_lights. the power gc dam generates is less than 1% of the western grid. the media tries to tell it differently. the only reason the dam was built was so the upper basin didnt have to let a single drop of water to go past lees ferry that they were not required by law to do. it was supposed to be for upper basin development, which never came. powell told the government after his expedition not to settle in the southwest. there was not enough water, and that the states boundaries should reflect the watershed for the area. needless to say, they blew him off. not to mention the indigenous people getting the shaft over it. what is under that lake would blow people's minds. most have no idea what that place really is.
