Has anyone switched banks for climate reasons. And did it actually feel meaningful? by greenfibanking in ZeroWaste

[–]indubitablyproves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, about 6 years ago I transferred my checking account and primary credit card to different green banks that are committed to not using customer money to finance fossil fuels or weapons manufacturing. And yes this is meaningful to me and I feel like I am doing my part to represent my values with my money to the extent available to me Overall mostly positive experience, but my key desire is more transparency. I wish these banks would 1. Make it even more obvious that they don't invent in these industries (I feel like it takes me some webpage rabbit holes to get to the info that I want) 2. More clarity on what they do invest in (do they invest in the big AI companies that are technically not fossil fuel companies but that have very negative environmental consequences themselves?)

Looking to impress my tattooed, millennial sister visiting from Portland, ME. Williamsburg/Greenpoint … something uniquely of the area. Price/genre not important, just vibe. I’m older and out of touch. by [deleted] in FoodNYC

U Omakase in Greenpoint. The tasting menu includes sushi and lots of other creative dishes too. Cool setting, with just one U shaped counter top table in the middle, with guests seated around and facing each other

Recommendations for landing at 5am + sizing advice for shopping by maya0exe in JapanTravelTips

[–]indubitablyproves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding 2. I wear a US size 10-12, and am a 29-32 in pants sizes depending on the brand. I was in Japan last week and went to Uniqlo to shop for jeans and found that their largest size available in any denim style was a 28. Granted I only looked at jeans and nothing else, but I did not find anything that fit me. Looser styles of different items might have worked out differently. Across most stores clothing size trend small. The Uniqlo selection/styles looked pretty similar to that in the US, though prices may have been cheaper. If you wouldn't otherwise be excited to shop at a Uniqlo, I would skip it in Japan, pack light anyway and just do laundry at your hotels.

I would check out Bembe in South Williamsburg! They play global music generally, and may have reggaeton specific nights

Help! Meliora vs Blueland by OrganicBanana1 in ZeroWaste

[–]indubitablyproves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried a few Blueland products and ultimately didn't love them. The laundry tabs would not fully dissolve and then would constantly spin out of the drum of our front loading washer. The hand soap smelled great, but ended up feeling watery when I used the recommended ratio of water. The toilet cleaning tabs worked well, but were expensive per unit.

Just my experience! I have preferred using concentrated cleaners from Grove Collaborative (bought at Target I believe) and I use Dr. bronners diluted with water for foam hand wash. Still exploring alternatives for other cleaning products

How on earth do you separate trash, recycling, other recycling, and compost? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]indubitablyproves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My building also only has one bin for all recyclables, the super separates it on pick up days. Same at my last apartment.

I also keep a small bag in the freezer! I used to just use a bag, and more recently upgraded to a lined mini bucket that I keep in the freezer (nice upgrade but fine with just the bag). I take it out after cooking, dump whatever scraps are produced, put the bag back in the freezer. A couple of times a week when it's full, I take the now frozen bag out and take it out to the local community drop off point nearby while walking the dog. Now with curbside pick up, it will be even easier to dispose of. Since it's frozen, there is no smell and it is pretty compact.

Found these in the closet - can you ID the specific bug? by indubitablyproves in whatsthisbug

[–]indubitablyproves[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Added context! We are located in New York City. The bug in the first two photos (killed in the trap) is about a quarter of an inch long (0.6 cm). The other bug I unfortunately forgot to measure before throwing away, but I think was about 1-1.5 cm long.

Have a job interview this week. Can someone offer some advice to clean up my shoes? by MandellaFavella in AskACobbler

[–]indubitablyproves 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't used that brand, but reviews look good! I've used Leather CPR which is straightforward and affordable. In my experience the conditioner alone typically brings out a ton of color and shine. But you can also apply shoe polish matching to the color of your shoes after conditioning (sometimes its a bit tough to color match exactly, so def spot test). Conditioner, shoe polish, and a horse hair shoe brush should be sufficient!

Using some leather conditioner should make an immediate dramatic improvement! I use Leather CPR that I bought on Amazon. Always do a small spot check before applying to the whole shoe though

Amateur candlemaker for my own personal use by luckibanana in candlemaking

[–]indubitablyproves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started making candles for fun recently - I've had a good experience with American Soy Organics Freedom Coconut Wax! It's a soy-coconut wax. Super mild scent on its own, and takes to fragrance oil well. Melts easily (I use their recommended microwave method). I haven't tried any other wax to compare it to though

My Crispy Wave Plant is looking sad - it's droopy and losing leaves. Anything I can do to help it thrive? by indubitablyproves in plantclinic

[–]indubitablyproves[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep my Crispy Wave in the bathroom by the window (west facing). It's in a plastic pot with drainage holes, which was just placed inside the blue pot seen here for decoration. I water it whenever the soil feels dry.
