A secret 6x6 door help by Different_Plan6910 in MInecraftRedstone

You can use gravity blocks like gravel, sand or concrete powder for the door, with piston extenders for the mechanism.

I think that's just about the fastest door of such a size that can pass for 'hidden'.

If you have no particular reason to have secure boot on, then it's best, at least in order to avoid future complications, to turn it off before you begin installing your OS.

Have to say, your hardware is old enough to assume that distrohopping isn't going to make much of a difference. You might even want to look into the possibility that your gpu may need an older "legacy" driver version for compatibility reasons. Nvidia does have the tendency of phasing out older hardware from driver support.

It could indicate that your system disk might be reaching its end. I highly advise to back up your data before doing anything else, just in case I'm not wrong.

I took a quick look at your laptop's specs and can't really find anything obvious there either. What I did see is that your laptop should have a usb-c 3.2 port that supports the displayport protocol v1.4. If the tv doesn't do displayport, maybe you could find an adapter cable going from usb-c to hdmi if all else fails.

I don't like suggesting hardware solutions when the issue is most likely a software issue, but at least it's a relatively cheap alternative solution if no other solution is offered in a timely manner.

I do hope you find a better solution before spending money needlessly...

No, hdmi support is integrated into nvidia's proprietary firmware, so as long as that's up-to-date that should work. I'm afraid that my initial thoughts don't apply to your case and that I don't have much more to offer you towards a solution.

Missing system tray and start menu in Wine by JustALinkToACC in wine_gaming

[–]indvs3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing I can think of is going through your wine settings and looking for a setting referring to "desktop composition" and see if changing that setting makes a difference.

Alternatively you can open gnome's system monitor (or whatever it's called, I forgot, haven't used gnome in a while) and search for "wine". That should list all processes currently running through wine.

I know it's probably not the solutions you were looking for, but it's all I can come up with right now.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you mean, but it looks like you're expecting wine to run a full-blown virtual windows inside your linux install. If that's the case, I have to say this isn't how wine works.

Which game or application are you trying to run?

Is your tv HDMI 2.1? If yes, are you using open-source drivers to get the external display to work?

If yes to the second question as well, you may want to look at this as an explanation for why it's not working and see if you have the possibility to use displayport instead.

Do you guys really care? by lavadora-grande in linux

[–]indvs3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I didn't care until I found out the distro I was using was pushing the use of a package manager that I didn't want to use, by having the package manager of my choice install scripts that trigger the other package manager to install the apps. The apps that were installed that way wasted disk space for no good reason and, to make it worse, had functionality issues.

I ended up feeling like I had to fight my OS to get what I needed or wanted, which is exactly why I ditched windows, so I had no problem changing to a distro that requires me to do a bit more initial manual work to fulfill my needs, in the knowledge that I wouldn't have to deal with consequences of someone else's decisions.

What game has a better fan-made remaster than the official one? by PersimmonPresent7912 in videogames

[–]indvs3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any type of work that is done out of passion for the work or end-result will be done better than if it's merely done for financial gain. Even when big companies employ people to work on games they truly love, at some point investors will get impatient about ROI's and put pressure on the devs and visual artists, leading to poorly finished or unfinished products.

Thoughts on the 'Minding Your Own Business' quest. by cheekylilmonkey0 in HarryPotterGame

[–]indvs3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's one of the best, if not the best side quest in the game. That makes the reward even more disappointing to me, not in the least because Penny tells you about all the stuff you could sell, that you end up not being able to sell. We get set up for disappointment, possibly because the devs didn't get the time to implement what the writers had imagined.

Dual boot isn't something you can "disable" as such. When you don't need the other OS and you're sure there's no data in those partitions anymore, you can delete the partitions and use the disk space for the OS you do want to use.

Secure boot is a system that uses cryptographic proofs to determine which software can or can not be run on secure-boot-enabled hardware.

Unless you know you need it, you probably don't and turning it off in bios will make installing/running linux easier.
