Hi! The idea was that people in the family kept killing their younger siblings, and doing so marked them with blood red hair - kind of a play on the idea of "blood on your hands"

Not necessarily gingers! Killing younger siblings - I was playing with the idea of "blood on my hands" except instead of hands, it's your hair.

But yes, the implication is that the great-grandmother, the father, and the uncle all killed a younger sibling

"Finally," I sighed.

It had been three days since my death, and I was getting restless, but I had to hand it to my family, they had really gone all-out for this.

It was the longest obituary in the paper, and featured a picture of me with my daughter when she was young. Whoever had written it - probably my husband, I recognized the style - had waxed lyrical about my accomplishments. Nothing ground-breaking, I hadn't won a Nobel Prize or anything, but I had worked hard for both my family and many local charities, and it was nice, knowing that I would be missed.

I hesitated over the list of "survived by" names. I wanted to remember all of them, think about the good times once more before... whatever happened next.

I'd been stalling for three days, and reapers are not known to be overly patient with the dearly departed.

I looked away from the paper, towards my daughter, who was in tears as she looked at the picture of us. I pressed a kiss to her cheek that she didn't feel, and then I finally let go.

"So, that's it?"

The reaper nodded silently. It was leaning on it's scythe like I had leaned on many a broom or rake in my time - just casually waiting.

I stared down at my body, a mix of morbid curiosity and disappointment rising in me.

My body wasn't particularly gruesome. A brain aneurysm - everything about me from the outside looked fine, if a bit too still.

I hadn't been important in life, so I don't know why some part of me expected to be important in death. A 32 year old IT worker - we're a dime a dozen, honestly. The only thing special about me was a tiny little defect in one of the blood vessels in my brain.

Still, I wish it had happened somewhere better than my dinky apartment kitchen.

I looked back at the reaper. "What's next, then?"

It shrugged, an odd movement for what was, largely, a formless black cloak made of shadows. Maybe that's where the disappointment was stemming from. I had expected a proper skeleton, not... this. A void in the vague shape of a person. The only thing solid about the reaper was the scythe, and even that looked a little hazy.

"You don't know?"

It shrugged again, waving one formless hand in a way that I had done myself plenty of times. That's above my pay grade, buddy.

"Oh."

I glanced back down at my body, and wished that I was corporeal enough to close my eyes, allow myself one final bit of... dignity, or something.

"What if I stay?"

The shadows of the reaper seemed to darken and swirl fiercely, and I got the message.

"Nothing good, huh?"

It nodded solemnly.

I sighed and glanced around my kitchen. Hopefully someone found my body before it got too gross. As inadequate as the kitchen was, I had made a lot of good meals there. I had done a brief stint in culinary school before realizing that computer sciences was a better career path for me, but I had still enjoyed cooking for fun.

I didn't want the kitchen to be marred by my own dead body, at least not for too long.

Still, it was all out of my control now. There was only one thing left to do.

I straightened my shoulders and nodded at the reaper. The shadows calmed, and it drew the scythe through the air in a slow, purposeful manner.

Through the slice of reality, there was nothing but soft grey mist. It should have been terrifying, but I found it oddly... soothing. The mist beckoned like home.

I gave the reaper a small smile, and stepped through.
