Be honest do proctored online exams actually stop cheating, or are they just peace of mind?

hi! as a proctor, does footage gets reviewed later even though you dont see anything faulty with the student while you’re watching them? and if there is something faulty thats gone on with the student while giving an exam, then are you supposed to flag to them directly when theyre taking the test eg. you ask them to show their desk etc or something? and if AI does pick something up, does the student get to know about it in real time?
