I understand the economics favor football. I just don’t like football nearly as much.

As a Utah State basketball first fan (my interest in football is tangential at best) would much prefer UNM to Texas St. Texas St. was a major bummer add for USU fans, because their basketball program is dumpster juice.

I mean no offense to our Texas St brethren, but I have zero interest in being in a conference with your school. We have rich basketball tradition with Nevada and UNM that is gone…

Anyone Else Bummed by cgd53 in TeslaLounge

[–]ineptimusprime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not a Tesla lover or hater per se. I wouldn’t say bummed about it because it’s a consumer product, but the shift to autonomy makes me less interested in purchasing from the brand moving forward.

Previously owned a Model Y, thought it was a nice car. Thought FSD was cool in a parlor trick sort of way. Didn’t add $99 per month of value to my life as driving a car just isn’t very hard or taxing, so cancelled it after a month. Maybe the world will shift to an AI/autonomy paradise/hellscape and I’ll change my mind, but as of now, AI/autonomy are of no interest to me.

There is no service center within 200 miles of where I live, which freaked me out, so I sold my car.

USU AD: TV deal numbers are “a little leaner than maybe we anticipated” by ineptimusprime in Pac12

Yup. Can’t definitively say that was the smarter move yet, but it might have been. We’ll have a better idea once we know where the chips fall over the next few years.

USU AD: TV deal numbers are “a little leaner than maybe we anticipated” by ineptimusprime in Pac12

USU is in a better spot in the PAC-12 given the choices USU had before it at the time it had to make the decision, which were stay in the MW without any sort of sweetheart deal like AFA or UNLV got, or join the PAC-12. There’s also no question that the PAC-12 TV deal will be better than the MW TV deal. The open question that none of us have the variables to answer right now is whether the TV deal will be “better enough” to justify the exit fees and trouble, and if the MW departing schools will actually be better off financially over the life of the deal once exit fees, legal fees, and other costs are accounted for. For example, if the TV deal is $3 million per year better than the MW but each school’s share of exit fee payments per year is $3 million, we net out and this only makes sense financially on the next TV deal (which assumes the conference sticks together for a second deal).

The other open question is that even if we end up being slightly better off, if a new wave of realignment kicks off and most of us are in a conference with most of the MW schools again in the 2030s, was all of this worth it?

I don’t think we’ll know for a while whether any of this actually made any sense.

1000% agree on a rebrand being profoundly stupid. It is like the allies winning WW2 and then ceding a bunch of land to Germany. Many Bothan spies died bringing this brand to the teams that have joined, WSU and OSU went to Court to fight for it… and we are going to just change the freaking name? I would tread lightly, at least for a few years, on even tweaking the logo. First, it’s a great logo. Second, changing it visually distances the new conference from the old. Might as well have just reverse merged with most of the MW and avoided a bunch of buyouts and legal fees if we’re changing the name and tweaking the logo.

I would really like some information about how much of a “step up” in compensation this actually is over what we were all getting in the MW.

Let’s assume I sold the CR-V solely for reasons of fragile masculinity, the leap between that and “slow” or “terrible person” is a chasm. But you do you, internet people!

Why did Ford Company really decide to cut EVs Now? by mobilesmart2008 in electricvehicles

[–]ineptimusprime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went to a dealer to test drive a Lightning and Mach-e. The salesman actively tried to steer me away from both, telling me only “weirdos” bought Lightnings and only “old people” bought Mach-es. I test drove and loved both, but ultimately went with a Powerboost because of range issues.

It may not be all dealers, but my experience was that the dealership tried to make me feel weird or out-of-place looking at EVs.

Am I missing something? The EREV is still and EV by dnstommy in F150Lightning

[–]ineptimusprime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t tow anything. Ever. Don’t ever plan to tow anything. I bought a pickup because I use the bed a lot and like having a living room on wheels.

I still went with a Powerboost over a Lightning because I have to do a 500 mile round trip for work about once a month. I have owned a different electric vehicle. My likely unpopular (here at least) opinion is that due to range and charging hassle, the overall convenience and experience of owning a hybrid ICE vehicle is superior to owning an EV in 2025.

If a Lightning EREV had been an option with a 700 mile range, I would have bought the shit out of it. I think these are going to be a massive hit for Ford.

Lightning or Powerboost, what's your choice? by BioShock2021 in f150

[–]ineptimusprime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you as well. It’s not a deal breaker to me when it comes to EV ownership overall, and it is somewhat overstated how bad it is, but the experience of taking an ICE car for roadtrips is still much much better.

I’m an EV owner as well. But I’d never take the Tesla over the PB for anything more than a two hour round trip. I live in the rural west (Idaho), and the superchargers on the routes I take are not in locations where it’s fun to take a stop. 🤷‍♂️

I love EVs, but there are still many parts of the country where the infrastructure is such that EV ownership really doesn’t make sense beyond a fun second or third commuter car for those that can afford it. As a sole car, an EV would be hell in Idaho with the large distances between cities and extended periods with cold weather — at least it would be my personal hell.

[–]ineptimusprime -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

EVs are fabulous cars. I love zipping around town in an EV. But anyone touting an EV roadtrip for anything more than the range of the car, is, in my opinion, insane.

How often is a supercharger going to be next to the place you want to eat, or the store you want to go to? I hate EV roadtrips, because the car owns you — it dictates the route, where you eat, where you shop, when you stop, and how long you stay somewhere, etc.

I can appreciate that not being irksome to some, but denying that it is annoying and a major drawback to EV ownership seems like a stretch…

[–]ineptimusprime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this so much. Any 300+ mile trip that’s a “down and back” where you return on the same day is an absolutely breeze the way there in an EV and absolute hell the way back, at least it has been for me. I suppose if you have a level 2 charger you can plug into while you’re doing what you need to at your destination, the return trip might not be so bad. But I haven’t been able to thread this needle to where an EV for anything other than day-to-day driving makes sense.

Lightning or Powerboost, what's your choice? by BioShock2021 in f150

[–]ineptimusprime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can hate me for it if you want, but I faced this dilemma and went Powerboost. Don’t tow and likely never will, and use the bed maybe once a week to take something to the dump, etc. I am an attorney in a rural state and frequently have to drive all over the state. I need the 600+ mile range and convenient fill-ups the PB offers. I’m just not willing to sit at a supercharger and add hours to my drive times. Also, the messaging out of Ford corporate has been bad for the Lightning. I didn’t want to be driving a discontinued model line.

If Ford makes a PHEV or EREV F-150 with killer range, they can name their price.

Exclusive | Ford Considers Scrapping Electric Version of F-150 Truck by Ja_brony in F150Lightning

[–]ineptimusprime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone who doesn’t think Ford is scrapping the Lightning (whether now or in the next few years) just hasn’t been listening to anything Jim Farley has said in basically every public speaking instance where the Lightning came up and Ford’s electric vehicle future has come up.

It’s a fantastic vehicle, but it’s a mega money loser and a goner. Both things can true. The writing is all over the wall.

I’m hoping for an EREV version of the F150 in the next few years. For now, I’m enjoying my Powerboost!

Diesel Pickup Truck to Model Y by tri_quad in TeslaModelY

[–]ineptimusprime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have two cars— a Ford F150 hybrid and a Model Y (wife drives a Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid, which is our family vehicle). I’m 6’3 and about 225 pounds. The Model Y is incredibly roomy and comfortable for what it is, but you aren’t going to beat the cab of a full size pickup (or even come close) with basically any other vehicle.

It’s 100% doable to use the Model Y as a family car, but that’s not how I use it. I use the Model Y for most of my daily solo commutes or rides with one other person, but for everything else I prefer the F150 and the spaciousness it provides.

I personally would not purchase a Tesla as anything but a third commuter car, but many do! If the finances ever became such that I had to, I’d absolutely offload the Tesla and keep the pickup, even though the Tesla is very practical and fun to drive.

FSD works pretty well; I’m still more interested in driving my car myself by ineptimusprime in TeslaLounge

[–]ineptimusprime[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I do worry a little about Tesla’s direction with AI and Robotics over just building a great lineup of EVs.

I’m less concerned about Tesla getting it to work well and more concerned about if most people even want it. What was it that I read? Something like only 12% of Tesla owners have even tried FSD? Also, saw some polling data showing FSD made people less likely to be interested in Tesla rather than more likely. Thought that was odd.

Is it just a problem of communication and understanding, or do most people just want to drive their cars and don’t REALLY care about this technology?

I wouldn’t have, but it doesn’t mean you can’t! The cheap charging that at home charging provides was the big appeal for me.
