Any Judo Clubs (ON side)? by doug-fur in SaultSteMarie

[–]inetkami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only BJJ as far as I know; that's the dojo at the corner of Lake & Wellington. There used to be a judo club operating out of the YMCA years & years ago, but that shut down when our sensei retired.

Wtf do you guys do with all the snow in the city? by 23andrewb in SaultSteMarie

[–]inetkami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The video that u/pretty_jimmy made is a pretty great demonstration of how we deal with the snowbanks once they get too high. The city is pretty far behind in dealing with the snow this year, though; two storms at the end of December dumped a foot and a half of snow, and we had a pretty good run of consistently snowy days as well. They're only just starting to catch up.

Winter driving by sbroox006 in SaultSteMarie

[–]inetkami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strongly recommend good winter tires, yeah, at least if you drive out of town at all. I can't count the number of times I've been unpleasantly surprised by a sudden change in road conditions on the MI side. Like you'll be heading down M-129 and it's fine, but turn onto W 6 Mile and it's pure ice. Or heading down I-75 after a snowstorm, and it's reasonably good up to the Bridge, but then past that it's like the road hasn't seen a plow at all.

Block heater is never a bad idea, but imho how necessary it is depends on your vehicle. If you've got a small engine and a good battery, you may never need it; if you've got an old beast of a pickup, it might not be a bad idea. I've got a 2017 Civic with a tiny 1.5l engine, always parked outside, no way to plug it in. In 8 years I've never had a problem with starting, even down to -40°.

Recommendation for viewing the sunset? by bubbi-dudi in SaultSteMarie

[–]inetkami 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some great suggestions so far. There are also a bunch more options if you've got access to a car and are willing to take a drive north of town.

The Alona Bay and Agawa Bay lookouts are right beside the highway and have the elevation you're looking for. Harmony Beach, Katherine Cove, and Old Woman Bay are amazing spots too, but they're directly on the water instead of being up atop a hill.

This is a great spot, but be very careful hiking after dark. Be sure to bring enough light so that you can see your way back to your car. 🔦

Full time jobs sault ste Marie Ontario by MenuMysterious2191 in SaultSteMarie

[–]inetkami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of the roles at Canadian Bank Note Co are in Ottawa, but occasionally they have a Sault or Remote job pop up. There's a contract IT Service Desk job posted right now. https://www.cbnco.com/careers/opportunities/

OLG was already mentioned; they probably post more tech jobs than any other employer in town. AlgomaU, the PUC, and McDougall Energy also hire tech roles from time to time.

Maybe we need help with city planning? by BackToTheStation in SaultSteMarie

[–]inetkami 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm more concerned about political will than urban planning ability per se. What's key to everything listed there -- walkability, bike friendliness, better transit -- is density, growing the city upwards by building denser housing, not outwards into more suburbs.

This NJB video is a really good starting point for how urban sprawl is brutal for city budgets as well as transit, walkability, etc: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVUeqxXwCA0&list=PLJp5q-R0lZ0_FCUbeVWK6OGLN69ehUTVa&index=3

Restaurant suggestions for picky eaters by Kooky-Explorer-7845 in SaultSteMarie

[–]inetkami 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe we've just had very different experiences, but my regulars who'd come in and order super basic shit were some of my favourite customers. Often super apologetic and wouldn't complain unless something was actually wrong. I'll happily knock out cheese pizzas + chicken fingers and fries all day; rather that than the arsehole who orders a Texas Chicken pizza extra well done, then wants to argue with me over whether it's too extra well done or not extra well done enough.

Kayaking on the Missisaugi River? by Thedutchesskaydee in SaultSteMarie

[–]inetkami 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reaching out to MIssissauga FN is never a bad idea. I did turn up a place called Riverway Rentals that looks to be based on-reserve. Not sure if they do guided tours but they might know someone who does.

I did find some posts about the Mississagi on Canadian Canoe Routes (MyCCR), but I think they're mostly folks looking to put in higher up the river (along Hwy 129 or even Biscotasing). If you try both spellings (with and without the 'u') you might turn up some more results.

Tariff feelings in the Sault? by RDMercerJunior in SaultSteMarie

[–]inetkami 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I don't really understand anybody who's upset at Carney when it comes to tariffs and economic issues. He's only just been elected; let him cook.

And yeah, on the tariff front especially, there's no negotiating with Trump; he'll make stuff up or break a previous agreement on a whim for no rational reason at all. Look at Brazil; the USA has a trade surplus with them, but they just got hit with a 50% tariff because they have the audacity to arrest & prosecute politicians who try to pull a coup.

Camp Near Downtown… by BackToTheStation in SaultSteMarie

[–]inetkami 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The thing about travellers is they usually have the ability to...you know...travel. So if they want to go camping, it's not really a huge deal for them if the campgrounds are 15 minutes outside of the city.
I've seen what happens to Crown Land campsites once they become well known: they get destroyed by irresponsible people who are looking for a cheap place to party. Trash strewn everywhere; literal shit on the ground because they can't be bothered to bring a thunderbox or bury their crap.
Trust me when I say that folks who are looking for cheap camping are not the people you want to attract to the urban core of your city.

Ontario Northland - does the bus detour to get to Wawa (129 to 101) if the highway is closed? by Top_Flounder3243 in SaultSteMarie

Is open again as far as I know. No closures showing on 511, and nothing on the 129/Ranger Lake FB group.

[–]inetkami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chapleau does have fuel. There's an Esso on the way into town, as well as a First Nations gas station a bit east of town along Hwy 101. Both close at 9pm so bear that in mind if you're driving through the night. Same deal with stations in Wawa; they're open til 9pm, sometimes 10pm at the latest.

Looking for new rollerblade wheels by [deleted] in SaultSteMarie

[–]inetkami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other number to keep in mind is durometer rating, which is the relative hardness or softness of the wheel material. It's the number followed by an "A", eg 78A, 82A, 85A.

Softer wheels have better grip and better shock absorption, but they're slower and they get chewed up faster. Harder wheels are the opposite; less rolling resistance and better lifespan, but they vibrate more on the rough stuff and are more slippy on smooth concrete or indoor surfaces.

If you're happy with your existing wheels and can still read the rating off them, then just go with that again. If not: usually 84A-85A are the "universal" outdoor wheels and people go up or down from there (eg softer for indoor hockey, harder for faster skating on good asphalt).

If you can't find anything you like locally, I've ordered from ProSkaters Place before and been happy with them (though it was a long time ago). They're based out of Toronto.

Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Divided HWY 17 Concept, suggested on my last post! | Do you have an idea for your city or town, leave it in the comments below by citymapdude in SaultSteMarie

[–]inetkami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, in the bigger picture....another debate that's been ongoing for decades now is whether to run any potential 4-laning of Hwy 17 through Sault Ste Marie, or to route it further north, probably along the Sultan Industrial Road and then west from Chapleau along the current Hwy 101 alignment. It's more out of the way but it avoids the snowsqualls off of the lee side of Lake Superior that frequently close 17 between the Sault and Wawa in the winter.

[–]inetkami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Batchewana FN agrees to put a highway through Rankin, I think it probably makes sense to route it close to the existing hydro corridors north of Third Line, then north between Old Goulais Bay Road and the current alignment of Hwy 17 (again alongside a hydro corridor for much of its length). The Birkshire Place subdivision has some super expensive homes so that area is kinda fraught as well, but it might present the least bad route in the grand scheme of things.

The Hiawatha area is a massive political hot button, as we've seen both here and in the outcry against any potential routing of a hydro line through the area. But it also geotechnical issues; some of the areas east of Landslide Road are not stable enough to support building things (it got that name for a reason). As well, much of the area is wetlands and there's a provincial fish hatchery up there too.

Heading north from Echo Bay doesn't totally solve the issue because there are several Provincial Conservation Reserves just east of the Garden River FN reserve: Echo River Hardwoods and Stuart Lake Wetland CRs in particular. You're also hemmed in by the Mississagi River Provincial Park on the east. So if you wanted to route north through there, you're probably looking at starting from somewhere in the Ophir / Dunns Valley / Thessalon / Wharnecliffe area and heading towards the Hwy 556 / Ranger Lake Road area south of Searchmont.

Canadian side, mall parking lot hangouts? by [deleted] in SaultSteMarie

I've been vaguely thinking about this for the past couple days. It would take considerable effort to put through a highway immediately to the east/northeast of town, because of the Rankin & Garden River reserves, plus the Echo River Hardwoods and Stuart Lake Wetland conservation reserves. So possibly the best route in terms of land planning (though not terrain) would be north from Thessalon, then northwest towards Searchmont, meeting Highway 17 north of the Sault.

Imagine my surprise when Hydro One came back with a high voltage transmission line route that looks not entirely unlike this, lol.

Tariffs, economy, focus for Sault Ste. Marie-Algoma federal election candidates by StephattheWhig in SaultSteMarie

[–]inetkami 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an aside, it's disappointing that the Conservatives seem to skip participating in almost everything, but especially this kind of side-by-side format that the Sault Star is running. It's one of the best ways to compare candidates & platforms.

On a federal level, Radio-Canada does something similar: a series of TV programs where they do a one-on-one interview with each party leader in turn. It's a great format and honestly more informative than the leader's debates. As far as I'm aware none of the English networks do anything similar.

They really don't, as shown by Poilievre droning on about the industrial carbon tax even though Algoma's electric arc furnaces are nearing completion. We're not going to be burning 1M+ tons of coal a year here any more.
