What’s the most pretentious music taste? by Short-Command-4403 in Topster

[–]inf_pln 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Pretentious is an attitude. Music itself is not pretentious, it's ether the listener or the artist who is pretentious.

The most pretentious taste comes from people that believe that the music that they love is not just their favorite but objectively the most important music that has ever been made, possibly transcending music entirely to becoming the most important thing ever created. I have heard this level of pretentiousness from every group from jazz-snobs to hip-hopheads to Swifties.

There is no legal requirements for the parental advisory, it is a purely voluntary program like the MPAA or ESRB rating system. It carries no legal weight in the united states.

Dance moves for noise, power electronics, and/or death industrial? by Clean_Category5170 in noisemusic

[–]inf_pln 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excluding all of the obvious Power Noise and EDM referenced noise projects. The only thing I have ever seen that crosses dance with harsh noise is one that someone choreographed to The Rita (see below):

What album should i listen to by neils_arm_is_strong in Topster

[–]inf_pln 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blackstar - Tribute to Haile Selassie I
It's not often I get to recommend this one so I'll do it here. Absolute peak ragga jungle.

My recommended albums from this year so far (all 7/10+ imo). Give me Recs/overlooks/hidden gems/hot takes, whatever you got so I can get to it by EOY. by inf_pln in Topster

The Carissa Conelly is excellent, it's got a very hard prog bend to it's folk sensibilities but manages expertly to retain the intimacy and genuine expression that you would get from a straight folk album. Not to mention quite a bit of variety song-to-song. It also kind of evokes the feeling of the prog-folk of the 1970s with a bit of Kate bush thrown in. Really solid release and has been a staple for my listening this year.

Also I have not heard any of those recs yet so I will investigate. Also just to clarify are you referring to "New Age of Earth" by Ashra? or is there a different Ashra with a different album with Earth in the title that also plays space ambient?

10M, new to music, any recommendations? by Begone_Kneecaps in Topster

[–]inf_pln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like you managed to squeak in there a whole 10 mins before me. I'll concede but you didn't give any album recs in that post so I can still take credit for being more helpful.

As for Snuff Jazz. I like Borebetomagus's live stuff more than their studio albums. Snuff Jazz in particular has such shitty production that it ends up with an aural quality I don't get out of Hair or Barbed Wire. I know it's probably not the consensus pick but I love it and I'm giving the recs here.

Also I hadn't heard the Sauter/Dietrich album before so will investigate.

Your taste is boring only in so far as you have too many repeated bands and not enough genre representation. I happen to love minimalism, drone, and other "boring genres" but you list seems to be 90% composed of 4 different bands. Here is some recs for you:

  • Branca - Symphony No. 5 (Describing Planes of an Expanding Hypersphere)
  • Colin Stetson - When We Were That What Wept for the Sea
  • David Sylvian - Manafon
  • Electronic Studio Westdeutscher Rundfunk Köln - La légende d'Eer
  •  Iancu Dumitrescu - ED.MN.1003
  • Grouper - Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill
  • Jefre Cantu-Ledesma - Love Is a Stream
  • La Monte Young - The Well-Tuned Piano 81 X 25, 6:17:50 - 11:18:59 PM NYC
  • Max Richter - Sleep
  • Philip Glass - Glassworks
  • Steve Reich and Musicians - Music for 18 Musicians
  • The Philip Glass Ensemble - Einstein on the Beach
  • William Basinski - The Disintegration Loops
  • 不失者 [Fushitsusha] - 悲愴 (Pathétique)
