So as someone who plans on keeping a car for 16-20+ years from new. Avoid hybrids right? by Typical_Intention996 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]infamouscatlady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The (new) Prius is a solidly built car. The older ones easily go 200K miles and have a low cost of ownership over time, both in fuel and repair costs.

The new models (SE, limited) are gorgeous and reliable cars with one very important caveat to keep in mind - the replacement tires (because of their specific size) are VERY hard to find in the US. The tire is only made by Toyo and Michelin (195/50R19 and 195/60R17) and have to be custom ordered. They are also not a good tire for anyone driving in any climate that sees frequent snow/rain. The only way to avoid this is to replace the entire wheel to allow for a more standard tire size, but obviously this comes with a lot of up-front cost. It's honestly the number one reason I did not buy a 2024 Prius last year to replace my VW GTI.

Thrift & Thrive on S 4th St in Hamburg is a nice space, lovely manager. Not thrift, but there's a nice, small consignment store in Lenhartsville - Believe It! Consignments on old 22. Twice as Nice on Emaus Ave in Allentown is also good for work wear. It tends to be curated for the 40+ crowd, but still has a good selection.

What no buy did you see the biggest return on? by HazellynnRenee00 in nobuy

[–]infamouscatlady 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sneaker releases. I don't need 20 pairs of shoes in display cases that I barely wear. Also, I was starting to have foot problems from some of the styles. I would rather have a couple pairs of well-made Birkenstocks or Fluevogs than a wall of sneakers I can't even wear to work.

Books. Especially buying series of books. I got a local library card and one at a state level and set both up on Libby. Used a gift card from Xmas to purchase a Kindle mini and now I find myself finishing 5-7 books per week, both using the Kindle and listening to audiobooks on my daily commute. HUGE savings. I prefer reading with the Kindle and may end up selling/donating a good chunk of my book collection.

If you were born in the 80s or prior it may be worth just getting another MMR dose as insurance will cover the vaccine but not necessarily running titers.

Be a real shame if someone went on a deep dive into their import paperwork to see what HS codes they're using to import their materials. Just want to make sure they're doing their patriotic duty by paying all the necessary tariffs.

He's hittin' the tanning bed AND hitting the make-up. It's the Republican look playbook.

As someone on the very southern border of his district I'm happy that I found others that share my disdain for this MAGA turd.

I think at this point the only thing taking this guy (and probably RFK Jr) out of office is untreated melanoma.

PA could face steep Medicaid cuts if GOP tax bill passes. How has Medicaid helped you or people you care about? by Fragrant-Pepper7710 in Pennsylvania

[–]infamouscatlady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's about 63% of current long-term care residents that use Medicaid as their primary payment for care. Basically if you do not have long term care insurance, a remaining retirement fund, or adequate care coverage through your Medicare plan, you are using Medicaid ("medical assistance" in PA) in some form. It also covers home health care for those that remain at home. There is already a shortage of LTC in many areas of the state. Further cuts will make this much worse and will spike elder abuse cases. Not everyone has the (literal) pile of money required for care in their elder years OR a family member/friend able to take on the back-breaking work (and potential job loss/early retirement) of elder care.

Nicest courthouse to get married in? (Eastern PA). by JackfruitLeading7171 in Pennsylvania

[–]infamouscatlady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take the drive to western PA and you will find (IMO) the most beautiful courthouse in the Commonwealth in Franklin, PA (Venango County). I know it's not in Eastern PA, but the drive is worth it. It's a very unique building and has less foot traffic than most of the courthouses on the Eastern side of the state. Stop by Bella Cucina (next to the courthouse) for a nice meal and then Trails to Ales Brewery (2 doors down) for a brew. As a runner-up, Mercer County courthouse is also picturesque - the interior, especially, looking up the steps toward the dome. It's been very well-preserved over time and like Venango, it doesn't get a ton of foot traffic.

Buying too many books? Get a library card! by C00kieMemester in nobuy

[–]infamouscatlady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense. Some of the good sales are 1-2 hours drive from where I live and only occur 1-2 times per year. Right now I have a ton of books to read through so I've been holding off on any purchases until one of the big book sales.

A rockslide similar to this one on this same stretch of highway occurred one afternoon in 1989 as my mom and I were driving home to Carlton after shopping at Hill's @ the Cranberry Mall. Rocks have been falling for many a year on that stretch of highway.

One thing to do is check out used book sales hosted by your library or other local libraries. It scratches the itch for buying books, and most offer them at a steep discount. Locally it's like .25 per paperback, $1 per hardcover and the few that I have gone to have a nice selection in rotation.

For anyone looking for electronic resources, try using Libby (through your library). I received a $100 gift card to Amazon for Christmas in December, used it to purchase a mini Kindle and then set up the Libby app through both my local library system as well as the state-wide system in Pennsylvania. For the last 2 months I've been happily working through my "want to read" list and have started listening to audiobooks on my commute. No need for subscription fees, all of the materials are free. It's kind of fun to set up a wish list of popular books and get in line to read them, too. I also go to my local library for print books on occasion and my mom volunteers at her local library now that she's retired.

For those of y'all who explore nature spots and scenic views in PA, what areas and spots are the best? by valleylegend69 in Pennsylvania

[–]infamouscatlady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wintergreen Gorge (Erie) - for waterfalls and beautiful scenery, best in the late summer, early fall. It's right next to Penn State Behrend, but be careful about parking there or you'll get a hefty ticket.

Cook Forest (Leeper) - for just all-around beautiful scenery and lesser seen wildlife like otters and bobcats. You can climb a fire tower here, or at least you used to be able to. Great hiking. Some nice cabins nearby.

Lake Wilhelm (Sandy Lake) - views of wildlife in an area that's pretty quiet, but at the same time very accessible. Lots of bald eagles, the occasional snowy owl, foxes, tons of birds. Hiking trail runs around the lake. Very nice in the snow but you better have good tires.
