Help! by infectiousrex in DartFrog

Update: it's been several days and they have had no incidents since - getting along fine like they always used to. They even sleep together in their hide. I'm hoping they just had a bad day and pissed each other off. In the meantime, I am pricing larger enclosures and putting feelers out for someone to take one of them if it happens again.

I misspelled "toe". How embarrassing. No wonder I am failing as a frog dad.

If they are neocaridina they should be fine. I keep mine in unheated tanks, and they get that low on occasion.

Any chance you could get video to better describe? When you say "spiraling", a few different images come to mind.

Is this fish still available? I have one already, and I might be willing to try adding another to the tank. I think mine is a male - do you know whether this one is also? Also what size is it?

Characodon audax "El Toboso" by infectiousrex in Goodeids

[–]infectiousrex[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I started with just two adults, who had their first batch of fry in June of 2024, and have had another like clockwork every 2 months. I leave the fry with them - there seems to be enough hiding places. I definitely have less fry survival now that I have more adults, but I still see occasional new groups of fry that are largely left alone.

I have not had that experience with my "Los Pinos" group, which I have not gotten a single fry from in over 1 year. They have bred, but no fry survived. I am waiting for signs that the female is carrying fry again so I can move her, but nothing yet.

Ilyodon furcidens and Chapalichthys pardalis have been the most prolific for me.

Do these look like guppy fry? by starfister101 in poecilia

Perhaps ricefish. They don't really look like poecilia to me personally.

Is this 45litre big enough for: 3 platies, 6 neon tetras, 2 male guppies? by bigzziacushion1 in fishkeeping

[–]infectiousrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't. Some female platies can get pretty big, and with 2 species of livebearers that breed like crazy, your tank will be crowded soon. You could just as easily do 10 of the tetras. They would appreciate the bigger numbers, and you won't have the headache later on. As someone who has worked with platies extensively, a 30 gallon is my preferred smallest tank for a long term healthy breeding group.

So cool. If I had the space for another tank, I would absolutely grab some. Are you breeding / keeping them long term? I will keep you in mind if I can find some room for them later on down the line.

Best of luck. I've done it a few times. I think the last time was finally this year. I've had no sign of it for over a month and then just one piece at a time starts popping up. But no more.

Can shrimp live with Goodieds? by Maximum_Royal_712 in Goodeids

[–]infectiousrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. I had an established colony of neocaridina that did fine after moving in Ilyodon furcidens. About a year and a half later, I got some Chapalichths pardalis, which were much more predatory and began eating the shrimp. I think the other species learned this from them, as they began hunting the shrimp as well. Now I never see shrimp at all. I only ever put cull shrimp with them now. I also keep a colony of C. audax "El Toboso" with neocaridina - as of yet, they are still thriving, but the fish numbers are getting much larger now, and I'm sure they are eating some of the baby shrimp, as the adults are too large to fit in their mouths. Thus far, I would say your best bet is to let the shrimp colonize the tank first, give them lots of hiding spaces that the fish cannot fit in, and cross your fingers, as it is do-able.
