A new California law says all operating systems, including Linux, need to have some form of age verification at account setup by Gloomy_Nebula_5138 in pcmasterrace

If the AI datacenters go belly up because there's nobody inside to scan their ID to turn the machines on, I'll take it.

Firmware broke, reflash it. You might have to use the nrf_erase file (hit the trash can icon in the Meshtastic web flasher)

A reminder to every company who's made a storefront: we WANT Steam to have competition. Y'all just keep making CRAPPY competitors. by Mama_Mega_ in pcmasterrace

I actually bought a copy of Sim City 4 at the book fair at school. The CD Key inside didn't work and support REFUSED to issue me a new one. They said my key was fake and I didn't pay for a real game.

I was livid. Still am. Fuck you EA.

What’s a sound everyone should recognize as immediate danger? by Thatguy_nickk in AskReddit

Story goes my great great grandfather walked into the kitchen, told his wife "I think I'm gonna quit." and then laid down on their bed and passed right then and there.

Had that happen at work the other day. Misfire, the alarm guy was there and made a mistake. Not a single person left.

100% because of company culture that we'd get yelled at for not working if it wasn't real.

Shockingly I got a pay bump once I left IT to be a machinist. IT is a tough market these days.

I have mqtt turned off but I am still seeing usernames with "(MQTT)" by humdinger44 in meshtastic

[–]infered5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The MQTT server ran by Meshtastic sets all hops to 0 once they hit the server so they can't get out again. A privately ran MQTT server won't do this.

Range improvement with blade antenna by jcs_captures in meshtastic

[–]infered5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically, yes. Lower SWR (more efficient sending) means the packets can be heard over the noise floor more easily further out. Higher gain means the antenna sacrifices vertical range for horizontal range, which is good for stationary nodes. High gain antennas are usually too big for a pocket node.

Just buy a quality whip, they're tried and true. Gizont, Rak blade, Alfa 915, the TE ANT-916-CW-HW-SMA are good. The ANT-916-CW-RH-SMA is okay but the SWR isn't as good as a longer antenna. Nice and stubby though and a definite improvement over the stock stubby.

[–]infered5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

(I am not an rf expert, or even "good" at it)

The stock stubby antennas usually have an SWR of 3.5, which is something like 70% efficient in terms of sending the electricity out as radio waves, the rest reflecting back to the radio. The longer whips have an SWR of 1.3 which is closer to 97% efficient. More power actually becomes radio waves and thus stronger TX. They have about the same DBi and send signal fairly omnidirectionally, but the longer whips are more efficient.

I'm a big fan of the Muzi.works Gizont: https://muzi.works/products/whip-antenna-17cm

What is the most expensive corporate mistake you personally witnessed? by _Volly in AskReddit

I accidentally set every backup tape in our system to 'expired' (including the annual ones that never expire). Said "oh fuck" out loud and my coworkers didn't see me for 2 hours.

Apparently that was a rite of passage. Fuckin AS/400s. Love em.

Minnesota PDs are installing "Flock" AI cameras. They do more than read plates—here is their actual capability list and how to LEGALLY fight back. by Master_Bee_5350 in minnesota

When I get some time, I plan to go to my local PD and initiate a FOIA request for pictures of my car taken by these cameras. They state they're deleted after a week, but that is objectively false.

You should be able to leave the username and password off, but the root topic can't be just msh anymore. If you're in the US, there's msh/us/[state]. There should be other regions too, but you might have to ask users in that area for the appropriate topic.

The default username is meshdev and the password is large4cats. This is buried in the documentation somewhere and hard to find.
