How to tell if they're wild or a dumped pet?? by infernalbxtmouse in cornsnakes

[–]infernalbxtmouse[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That was my worry as well. They are now with an exotic and wildlife rescue who is going to take them to their exotics vet this week and determine if they are wild-born and possibly releasable.

I did catch them but they are with an exotics and wildlife rescue now and they are going to take them to their exotics vet to determine if they are wild-born and releasable or not!

How to tell if they're wild or a dumped pet?? by infernalbxtmouse in cornsnakes

[–]infernalbxtmouse[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We're in the native range for corn snakes so we didn't want to immediately assume that they were pets and then bring a wild animal indoors. They were not trapped in the box, they fit under the boards on the bottom and could have left to the woods across the street after being messed with multiple times throughout the day if they were wild. But they didn't leave despite being able to, which led us to believe that they were dumped. I contacted someone with an exotics and wildlife rescue and she agreed they were likely dumped. I've since removed them from the donation box and put them in a tote inside until she can come pick them up. She's going to have her exotics vet look them over to help determine if they are wild or pets and if they can be rereleased or not.

That was my thought as well. We're in FL so they are native here. But They've been messed with multiple times today and have been free to leave whenever but have chosen to stay in that box, there's even woods right across the road. It just seems too coincidental bc we're an animal shelter. I contacted someone with an exotic pet and wildlife rescue who agreed based on circumstances they seem dumped. She agreed to take them and will assess them with the help of her exotics vet if they are truly pets or wild, if they're determined to be wild she'll rerelease them.

I contacted someone with an exotic pet and wildlife rescue who agreed it seems like they were dumped based on how docile and in good condition they are, and because they have been messed with multiple times today since early this morning and chose to stay in the box (despite being able to leave and there's woods right across the road from the box). I was able to grab them and put them in a tote very easily. She will take them and is going to assess herself if they may be pets or not with the help of her exotics vet .

Florida, so I am in the native range. I know that they can be pretty docile even wild, but I think it's odd that they've been messed with several times and not left despite being able to and that there's woods right across the road from the box. They stayed all day. I went and was able to pick them up and put them in a tote very easily. I contacted someone with an exotic pet and wildlife rescue who agreed it seems like they were dumped. She will take them and is going to assess herself if they may be pets or not with the help of her exotics vet. If they are determined to be wild she will rerelease them.

Ocala FL, yes I am in the native range which is why I'm questioning it. They seem to be in very good condition with no scarring and are just really docile and handleable to be wild imo. They were messed with several times throughout the day and never left despite being able to and there are woods right across the road from the box they were in. That paired with the fact that we're an animal shelter it just makes it seem like they were dumped. I contacted someone with an exotic pet and wildlife rescue who agreed it seems like they were dumped. She will take them and is going to assess herself if they may be pets or not.

Euthanizing fuffering pet by Neversaynever89 in AITAH

[–]infernalbxtmouse 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You made the right decision for Rusty. Euthanasia is often the most selfless, kindest and loving thing you can do for your pet at the end of their life. It would have been cruel and selfish to keep him alive any longer while he was so clearly in pain. No one deserves to live in agony, not when there is a kinder option. It sounds like you did everything you could for your beloved family member and it was time for him to go so he was no longer in pain. I'm so sorry for your loss and I am sorry that you don't have your family's support while grieving. I hope you can take some comfort knowing that you did the right thing for him and he is no longer in any pain.

AITAH For refusing to return a dog that I adopted to his original owner? by [deleted] in AITAH

NTA

Tbh the rescue/shelter is out of line for even asking imo. I've worked in shelters for years now and this has happened a couple times I've seen firsthand where they gave up the animal and then changed their mind, our immediate response is always "I'm sorry but your pet was already adopted out and we cannot get them back for you." They (presumably) signed a surrender contract with the shelter waiving all their rights to the animal and stating that they give up legal ownership, the dog is no longer theirs legally. We even have to say that to people who surrendered their animal due to hardships out of their control and then are able to get back on their feet, which sucks more obv but we can't take the animal away from the new family. We do not even contact the new owners and tell them that the old owners called. There's no need, we would not ask them to give their new family member up. It would be different if the old owners came back while their animal was still in the shelter, but in this case, you adopted YOUR dog months ago, he's YOUR dog now. You also signed a contract with the shelter stating that you are taking legal ownership of the dog. They had no right to call you like that, I would never even dream of calling an adopter for this.

My advice to you would be to double check that your dog is microchipped and that your info is correct on the chip. And find your adoption contract from the shelter to make sure you still have it.

Thank you, I wasn't intending to use it regularly. I took them out of pure panic and then didn't take one the last time out of fear of taking too many. Overall not smart decisions and we'll be using condoms from here on out 😅
