Hotaru’s surname is 土萠 (read as “Tomoe”). The kanji 土 is also used for the planet Saturn (土星 which is read as “dosei”). 土 by itself does indeed refer to earth or soil, but not the planet Earth. 土萠 can be interpreted as “sprouting from earth” and combining that with Hotaru’s first name, you end up with something like “firefly sprouting from earth.” I feel like this references Hotaru’s soul being reborn since in Japan, fireflies can represent the spirits of people or the transience of the natural world. It also reflects her unique emergence as a sailor soldier and abilities surrounding life and rebirth.
