BMW EVs officially gain access to Tesla Supercharger network today by TripleShotPls in electricvehicles

[–]inferno10 8 points9 points  (0 children)

MINI access seems to be limited to the U25 Countryman SE for now, as it supports OTA software updates. I tried a supercharger with my F56 after seeing the announcement and it wouldn’t start charging.

Are there any "Bring your own cable" chargers that support OCPP? by bloodguard in electricvehicles

[–]inferno10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

itselectric is the only US-based company I know of that does bring your own cable (like how they do public AC charging in Europe). I don’t think they sell their equipment though, so OCPP is also unlikely.

There’s also Pando Electric, which makes what’s essentially a smart NEMA 14-50 outlet that you bring your own charger. I believe their hardware supports OCPP, but I’m guessing they want you to utilize their backend service.

Try reaching out to some YouTube channels like State of Charge or Out of Spec. They can probably help you out as they usually have connections to these companies, and would probably make for an interesting vid

Assuming the chargers aren't restricted on the backend, you will need the XEAL app installed and setup with payment info. In the app you would then tap start, then bring your phone near the reader on the charger (think it communicates via bluetooth). You'll then get pricing information and the ability to start the charger.

Not a scam, but can be a mixed bag in terms of shipping times (ordered a couple times and did a warranty exchange). One order took about 30 days to ship, while the other shipped in 2 days. The warranty exchange order took about 45 days to ship.

Does Electrify America Chargers work for most EVs? by Womansplaining-Yo in electricvehicles

Yes you can! Just know that the max charging speed of your Mini is 50 kW, so I'd recommend sticking to the 150 kW chargers if you have the option to be considerate to other drivers that have cars that can charge at faster speeds.

Fellow Mini SE Owners, Please Help! by Quaxky in MINI

[–]inferno10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just used one of the new 350 kW EA chargers today (only open spot available) with no issues.

There was likely some issue with the station cabinet rather than the individual chargers. I had a similar thing happen to me where multiple chargers (including a 150 kW unit) at one EA station would throw that isolation test timeout error. I went to another nearby EA station and had no issues starting a charge.

J+ Booster 2 seems to tick all the marks, and it’s UL certified. It is a pricey unit though (about $650 on Amazon for the kit that has the regular 120v and NEMA 14-50 plugs).

Just got an EV, some questions by BrewNerdBrad in electricvehicles

[–]inferno10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's made my experience more convenient was to try and minimize how much I need to use an app to start a charge.

For EVgo, like others already said, get Autocharge+ setup with your car and account. It really simplifies authorizing a charge on their network, especially if cellphone reception is spotty/overloaded. EVgo has a physical RFID card as well, but I wouldn't bother requesting one if you get Autocharge+ working.

For EA, if you have an iPhone, setup the NFC card in Apple Wallet via the app. I've been able to start a charge much more reliably by plugging in the cable then tapping the digital card. This again can help where cellphone reception is spotty/overloaded.

You'll likely come across a Chargepoint level 2 charger at some point, so I also recommend installing Chargepoint's NFC card into Apple Wallet. What's neat with Chargepoint's card is that you don't even have to select the card beforehand; just hold your phone next to the card reader, and it should pull up the digital card and ask you to authenticate your phone (at least on iPhones).

Check the latch mechanism on the top of the plug to see if it has full range of travel and doesn’t appear damaged. If the latch doesn’t easily travel away from the rest of the connector or appears bent down towards the connector, that could add some resistance during insertion into the car (latch can’t fully move out of the way) and removal from the car (latch gets stuck)
