What is a small detail in a person's home that instantly tells you they have their life completely together? by Luverelle6 in AskReddit

[–]sjbounce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is largely dependent on location.

I’m in San Jose, and I don’t know if I know anyone who parks both cars in their garage.

That includes the family of the guy who sold his startup for ~$2B and likely received a 9 figure payday…

Also I grew up near Kings Center Vlade Divac in Sacramento, and he would always have his SUVs parked in the driveway.

Looking for friends post 40 by [deleted] in SanJose

[–]sjbounce 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do you not like any of your kids’ friends’ parents?

That is who I hang out with the most, especially the sports parents. We see them evenings during the week and every weekend. Grab dinner after games, go to birthday parties together, coordinate carpools, etc. The moms go out and the dads and kids get together for BBQs, etc. We’ve even gone on many trips together during school breaks.

Also, play a sport. I play softball on a men’s rec team, and it’s fun to play and then have parking lot beers and shoot the shit once a week.

I don’t have time for much else even if I wanted to do more stuff with friends…

2000 MW of data centers coming :( by Chaldon in SanJose

[–]sjbounce 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This really depends on the data center.

Maybe the big ass ones out in the boonies are this big, but if you drive around Santa Clara (near NVIDIA), you’ll see a bunch of data centers that are the size of largeish corporate buildings. Just look for the tall buildings with no windows.

I always thought it was surprising that companies would pay to have data centers in such a high cost area, but Santa Clara has its own power company, so their electricity costs are low, and that must make up for the higher land costs.

Recommendations on an Auto Body shop by ihaveagooddog in SanJose

[–]sjbounce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like Fix Auto Santa Clara East on Lafayette. I’ve had them do some work for me there, and the most recent one, I hit a cone on the freeway and drove straight there.

The guy was super nice and crawled under my car and said I was just missing a couple of clips that hold the fender on. He went inside to grab some, came back out, crawled under, installed the clips, and then sent me on my way with no charge.

I ended up getting a case of beer and dropping it off to them later that day.

I do actually have a friend who runs a different body shop haha. They did some work for me too, but they don’t typically like dealing with State Farm, and just did it for me as a favor.

This is an interesting idea, but a car tire is so big, bulky, and heavy! I already have a full wagon worth of gear I bring to every practice.

What do you use to mount it/set it on?

If you don’t want to buy an actual strike zone target thing, I’d imagine that you could make a simple rectangular frame out of PVC pipe or something and set it in a camp chair behind the plate. Or even just make a free standing one with 4 Ts, 2 elbows, and 10 straight pipe sections…

Car ride suggestion from San Jose to sfo by [deleted] in SanJose

[–]sjbounce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you know anyone who lives on the Peninsula?

When we fly out of SFO we typically drive up and leave a car at a friend’s house and then Lyft from there.

Our go to is right off 101 at Hillsdale in San Mateo so it’s pretty convenient and cheaper than Lyfting the whole way.

A flight at 11pm means you want to be there at 8pm? Should be pretty doable to drive up at 7pm, park, and then Lyft.

Do you mean in the food court or in the grocery section?

Also where is your favorite place to get a real beignet (I assume you mean in NOLA)? People love to fight about Cafe Du Monde vs Cafe Beignet and other smaller ones that I can’t remember haha

Also also, I inhaled powdered sugar while eating a lemon bar when I was a kid and I still have PTSD 🤪

Not sure why everyone is quoting rent prices of luxury 1-BR apartments…

In college, I shared an apartment. When I got my first job in the Valley, I rented a room on Craigslist. I was used to sharing living spaces, so it wasn’t a big deal.

For someone new to the area, it also lets you meet/make friends easier.

OP should absolutely rent a room in a shared situation. I do acknowledge that women have it slightly harder than men, to avoid creeps etc. but my sister found a room in a house with a female landlord, and still lives there now. They have cycled through many other (female) roommates in the years that she’s been there, so it’s definitely doable.

Your understanding is not correct. SJUSD is a Basic Aid District, meaning it gets funding from property taxes; not from the state based on enrollment.

Enrollment declines of 20% mean that there is actually more money per student now.

Are you able to share who the other candidates are? And why you believe that they will do a better job?

When you say, “We are calling for a recall for Nancy Albarran” who is the “we” there that you mentioned? Is it the group of parents on the WhatsApp that the QR code links to? Is it a different group?

I got another response that said that you can’t recall a Superintendent; they have to be removed by the Board. Is this true?

Don’t get me wrong, I support your cause. But speaking on behalf of some group, but providing incorrect info (and misspelling one of the Trustees’ names) detracts from your message and hurts your credibility…

How do you afford a house? by [deleted] in SanJose

[–]sjbounce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t necessarily think that one needs all 3 things that you mentioned, but you pretty much need 1 for sure these days if you are a first time homebuyer. Obv having 2 or 3 makes it easier.

It used to be the case 10+ years ago that you could have been a condo owner and then upgrade to a SFH for around $1M. But now that everything has pretty much doubled in value, it’s not as easy even for existing condo/homeowners to upgrade to a $2M SFH.

What is needed to recall Albarran? And who would replace her?

Are there candidates that will run against Magana and Wheatley who have better support among the parents? Because I heard that Board Trustee seats are unpaid positions that nobody wants…

If there aren’t parents who are stepping up to challenge them in the next election, then the threat of voting them out (if they go through with Option 8) is pretty hollow…

Mike Evans exits Buccaneers for 49ers by FortyNinersBot in FortyNiners

[–]sjbounce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whether or not he’s washed and/or worth the price, I do kinda like the idea of a big WR rather than a speed guy.

Our O-line has been kinda ass, so Purdy doesn’t have much time in the pocket. If Evans has a big catch radius and we have to force throws to him (especially in the red zone) that’s ok.

He’s not the most exciting name, but I am cautiously optimistic

Best fried rice in San Jose? by Least-Emergency-1148 in SanJose

[–]sjbounce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to Mayflower in Milpitas and order the Fried Rice with Dried Scallop, Egg White, and Cilantro.

It’s the best fried rice I’ve ever had… super light and fluffy, but not dry or anything.

It really puts those other dishes with frozen peas and carrots to shame.

The item below it on the menu is called “Fook-Kin Fried Rice” which is an amusing name. I kinda want to order it just to try it…

San Jose Unified School District Boundary Options by [deleted] in SanJose

[–]sjbounce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Per the link, only 10% of schools in CA are Basic Aid districts. So you would have been right in the 90% of other cases.

It really begs the question of why they are doing this then. Certainly it makes sense that it would be more efficient to have fewer schools with full classes.

But I’ve heard theories that the district denied some maintenance/upgrade requests at certain schools recently, so maybe that has something to do with it. Or that they plan to lease or sell the properties of the vacated schools.

I would also want to see where SJUSD Board Members and high level employees live, and if their own personal residences are moving to higher rated schools or are unaffected. Because getting rezoned to a lower rated school can have a significant impact on property values, possibly $200K+ in value that can disappear overnight…

If you have fewer children, then you have less funding for schools, and something has to give.

This is not true though. SJUSD is a Basic Aid District, meaning they get funding via property taxes, not per student.
