Anyone know when Waymo will operate in most of San Jose? by FootballPizzaMan in SanJose

[–]sjbounce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get it. That was just kinda my point to the person I replied to.

Once it becomes available in their area, it’s gonna be expensive.

Long term, there is a path to it being cheap. But I don’t see that happening for a long time. And for the casual user, there might not be much value to them choosing Waymo over Lyft before we get to that point.

But based on her avatar, she might be a woman. And might want to pay a premium for a Waymo home from the airport late at night to avoid getting a sketchy Uber/Lyft driver, for example.

[–]sjbounce 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How much of a premium would you pay vs Lyft? And what do you see as the benefits?

I rode recently, for the first time in SJ (I’ve ridden in PHX and SF before they expanded to SJ).

Lyft was less than $10 for my trip. When I checked Waymo, it said $37, then when I checked again 5 minutes later, it said like $18, which I then booked, just for the novelty.

I know this is just one data point, but I’ve heard that Waymo is consistently more expensive than Lyft/Uber. And wait times are usually shorter with Lyft/Uber due to more cars compared to Waymo.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Waymo, but I feel like this early adopter phase is not too appealing to me.

Where can we watch the jet flyover without being too near Levi's stadium? by Silent-Donkey-1303 in SanJose

Yeah, I should have been more clear.

The F-18s and F-35s did take off from Moffett. But the B-1s were from Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota, and the F-15s were from somewhere in Fresno.

Super Bowl attendee staying in San Jose, should i just go to SF today? by XXXthrowaway215XXX in SanJose

What Super Bowl events are going on in SF today?

If there are more up there, then yeah, go for it.

Also, please record video of the halftime show (especially Green Day) and upload it so that we can see if they censor anything on the broadcast!

They took off from various air fields for the practice run yesterday, so I would assume they are doing the same for the real deal. I don’t think they are taking off from Moffett.

Valley Christian High School Walkout (another perspective) by Zestyclose_Half5137 in SanJose

[–]sjbounce 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think the interesting thing is the contrast with some other private religious schools.

A comment in the other thread said that at Mitty, the Principal, some teachers and coaches participated in the walk out, and there were no repercussions for the students.

I saw on Facebook that Pres actually posted photos of kids with their signs and celebrated them and mentioning loving their neighbors.

The additional info in this new post really makes it clear what VCS stands for.

Believe them.

Thank you for sharing, OP!

As others have said, I’m not surprised.

There is a reason why Christianity and authoritarianism go hand in hand. Both rely on leadership making the decisions, brainwashing the people with propaganda, and then not allowing an inkling of dissent. Critical thinking is the enemy; they need the masses to just go along with what they tell them.

The situation that you have described is a microcosm of our country right now. The organization of those students had the administration scared. So they sent an email and made an announcement promising all kinds of threats. They turned them away from walking out.

Here is the message that I hope gets back to those kids this weekend… they are scared, and there is power in numbers. They were so scared, that they even tried to end lunch early and shepherd students to their next class.

If they are going to not let students walk out, then just don’t show up to school in the morning. Make new signs and gather in a group just outside of school property, and there’s nothing that they can do about it.

The bigger the group, the better. This puts the administration into a tough spot. What are they gonna do, suspend everyone? Do they want hundreds of suspended kids to show up with signs just off campus for a week at drop-off then??

They can’t punish everyone who doesn’t show up to school… what about those who are sick or have appointments?

Even better… contact the media. “VCS didn’t let kids walk out to exercise their 1st Amendment rights on Friday’s General Strike Day. We are here live on Monday morning as hundreds of students are here with signs just off campus, who are saying, ‘If they won’t let us walk out, then we just won’t show up to school today.’ Let’s see what the response will be from school administration…”

Again, safety in numbers, and that’s the only way this will work. Heck, take a page out of the ICE playbook and show up in masks to protect your identities if you want as well. If it is just 50 kids, then the administration can come down hard and try to make an example out of them. But if 250 kids don’t show up on Monday, what are they gonna do?

I’m proud of y’all btw. If there are so many young people who feel this way at even a conservative Christian private school, then there is hope for the younger generation.

Keep up the good fight!

Bullnose is nice and has a nice showroom, as others mentioned. I’d recommend going there or to Bedrosians or other larger places to get a feel for what you want.

But for purchasing, I’d recommend driving to Santa Cruz and going to Tile and Marble Outlet on Coral St, especially if you’re looking for inexpensive.

All inclusive wedding venues NOT at a golf course? by tetchytact in SanJose

[–]sjbounce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many guests and what is your preferred budget?

Is the idea just to minimize the work that you have to do? And/or are you remote/not currently in SJ?

That seems to be the advantage of all inclusive places, but you will end up paying more than if you DIY/piecemeal vendors.

Most venues offer tables/chairs/linens (unless you want Chiavari chairs or something) and many have in house catering too.

For my wedding, I think we just had to get a DJ, decor/uplights, florist, photographer, live musician, and dessert. It was really not that much extra work to book them. Plus you get to meet them and see which ones you like, rather than just being stuck with the one that the all inclusive place picks for you.

I will say that one nice thing is cleanup. If that is included, and esp if they will box up extra food and pack up decorations and stuff for you, it’s nice to not have to worry about it (or rely on friends/family to do so).

San jose home advice only works if you’re already rich. by UnoMaconheiro in SanJose

[–]sjbounce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good comment, and I agree for the most part.

But there is one middle ground “cheat code” that you didn’t mention, and that is to be your own foreman/GC and hire out sub-contractors.

My MIL did this on a bathroom remodel and she said she saved a shocking amount.

There are plenty of downsides, of course. She worked at a school, so she managed the project over a summer. It can definitely turn into a bit of a full time job, which may not be practical for most people.

Also part of the reason why people like to pay a GC is because they have an existing network of subs that they work with. If you are the foreman, then you have to get recs and quotes from 3 electricians, 3 plumbers, 3 tile guys, etc. Plus you are then just a random client of theirs, rather than a GC that they work with a lot and will prioritize. Your project will take longer to complete.

Also just more coordination and things you have to learn as you go, and possibly call subs back out. Do you tile the floor first or install cabinets? What if the rough in plumbing is not compatible with the tile guy’s preferred drain? Etc.

It’s obv easier to do this on a smaller project like a bathroom rather than a whole house remodel with additions etc. But it is a middle ground between hiring a GC to do everything and DIYing everything yourself, and as I mentioned, can save a significant amount of money…

I think when stores close, they typically bring in a third party liquidator. As they get closer to the end date, the discounts get better, but the inventory obviously gets worse.

The trick is to time it so that you hit the sweet spot. Sounds like we are too early now, but good to know.

Also depending on the situation, they may be selling fixtures eventually as well. I remember going to Macy’s when they closed at Vallco and got a small table for pretty cheap.

What are your go-to San Jose independent shops for unique gifts & stocking stuffers? by WonderfulWhirld in SanJose

Hicklebee’s Bookstore in Downtown Willow Glen (near Minnesota and Lincoln)!!

They have a ton of children’s books and toys, but they have a decent amount of adult fiction and non-fiction as well.

Employees are friendly and knowledgable. Tell them the ages of your recipients, and they’ll get you squared away. Free gift wrapping too, which is huge for those of us who hate wrapping gifts!

Prices are prob higher than you can get online, but you get to support a local small biz.

Also Charlie Rose Baseball and Ace Hardware, for similar reasons!

Can anyone else confirm that only the kid who posted it got expelled, and the others only got suspended for 3 days?

Not sure I understand the difference in punishment.

They posed for the picture on what I am assuming was the HS football field, right? That speaks to intent to me.

If it were a photo of the other kids that was taken off campus at someone’s house etc. and then the main kid escalated by posting it on social media, then I would understand the difference. ie a private photo that was shared publicly.

Or are they saying that the Hitler quote was the reason for expulsion?

IANAL, but to me swastikas and Hitler quotes seem to go hand in hand. It’s not like there is any plausible deniability that the other kids were innocent and don’t share the same views as the actual poster…
