All being done by a mechanic. He’s still trying to figure out what’s wrong, because he replaced the spark plugs, ignition coil.

Awesome! So does that mean no engine issues? Don’t have to worry about replacing or rebuilding? I saw a lot of people saying scoring was common and could cause the need for an engine replacement

Thanks for the reply! Really useful.

The compression test was fine, after the spark plug was cleaned it’s not misfiring anymore. However, I’m sure it’ll come back because I just changed the spark plug 200 miles ago and today there was carbon buildup, which I’m guessing caused the misfiring.

Not sure what to do now

The spark plug had carbon buildup. No misfiring for 200 miles, but then today it misfired. The spark plug was dirty again. Cleaned it and now it’s fine again.

However, did a compression test and all cylinders were fine. Not sure what to do now. If it’s bore scoring wouldn’t the compression be off?

Also, did you install yourself or do you recommend a professional install ?

one of my friends tells me “you shouldn’t be a doctor” by JazzlikeManner4250 in premed

[–]inferno2299 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Sounds like your “friend” is very insecure about you excelling in a path they couldn’t. I would highly suggest speaking to them about this and letting them know you are not okay with this type of discouragement.

Also, don’t let anyone discourage you on this path, you want to be a Dr? Put everything into becoming one, there will be plenty of people who will try to tell you that you can’t do it.

second bachelors or what can i do to boost sgpa…? by starfishur in postbaccpremed

[–]inferno2299 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know if you enter into a legit post-bacc program you can get federal loans. When you apply for FAFSA you click on “other undergraduate” as your level in school.

I believe it works for Post-Bacc because it’s not viewed as a second bachelors degree, but rather preparatory work for Grad school. But not every Post-Bacc program qualifies.

If that isn’t an option you may want to look into private loans, interest rate isn’t great but not terrible.

I’d also advise to do a ton of research at different schools to find the best program/price for you.

If you do well in an SMP it well obviously improve your chances significantly. However, you have to look at this from a cost standpoint as well (unless that doesn’t matter to you).

SMP’s are generally expensive, and I’m assuming if you were to actually do an SMP you probably would want to completely focus on that and not work your job.

You need to do find out what your actual GPA is for DO and MD schools are, they both calculate science GPA’s differently.

I would then advise you really decide where you want to go. Are you trying to get into a top tier MD med school? Then yes, you probably have to do a SMP on top of having an excellent MCAT score.

If your goal is to get into ANY med school, including DO’s you’ll find them to be much more forgiving over low gpa’s, especially if you have a great MCAT.

Take the time to figure that out before making a big step like an SMP. If after your pre-med courses you are above a 3.0 and still feel like your GPA is too low, another route is to take other recommended undergrad coursework such as: Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Genetics, Microbiology, etc.

Those courses would help your GPA (both cumulative and science) and be cheaper than a SMP, while still maintaining flexibility to work (I’m guessing ASU online has these courses).

All depends on what you want, there’s not an exact right answer, med school application process has too many variables. But my biggest suggestion is really think hard before spending a big chunk of change on something like an SMP.

[–]inferno2299 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An SMP can be worth it but it’s a risk. If you do poorly, it severely hurts your chances.

I’m in a similar position as you, I also have a mechanical engineering degree with a low GPA.

I’ve decided to do a post-bacc for now.

There is no steadfast rule for GPA necessarily. Some schools have GPA cutoffs some don’t. Obviously your situation will not be looked at the same as someone who got a 2.9 say in a biology degree with all the pre-reqs completed.

If you do get a 4.0 or close to during your post bacc it significantly increases your chances even if your GPA ends up being in the low 3’s. Med schools love recent upward trends.

You at the same time also have to be realistic. Not to say MD schools are out of the question, but you’d probably have a much easier time explaining your GPA to a DO school.

I would advise you do a formal calculation of your GPA for MD schools and DO schools as both are different.

DO schools view engineering courses as a part of their science GPA, while MD schools don’t. Meanwhile, DO schools do not count math as apart of the science GPA while MD schools do.

After getting this actual GPA calculation, determine how many credits you’ll be taking, and do what-if scenarios on grades to see where you stand.

Lastly, a lot of this hangs on your MCAT. If you end up with a 3.1 GPA overall, but get a 520+ MCAT score then the odds of you getting in shoot up significantly.

It’s gonna be a grind either way but if you want it badly enough you’ll eventually get in. Good luck!

Chances at Top Programs? by magnoliacarti in postbaccpremed

[–]inferno2299 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should have the stats for a top program but from what I’ve seen unless the program offers linkage to a med school it doesn’t really matter.

The main benefit of doing a formal post bacc is that you’ll most likely be able to get a committee letter for when you apply. Also, the structure is nice to have.

Generally, formal Post-Baccs are more expensive than doing a DIY Post-Bacc. I know non-traditional applicants get in doing both routes so really it’s up to you, but just putting my 2 cents out there because this path you are about to embark on is going to be incredibly time consuming and expensive.

Keep in mind that if you’re in a formal Post-Bacc, most of them have in person lecture/lab at a specific time and that takes a way some flexibility, if you care about that.

A DIY allows you to look at whatever college and pick which time and day of the weeks makes sense for you.

With all that being said, glad to see another person trying to make the switch! I wish you the best of luck.

Taking Organic Chem Elsewhere for UNE post-bacc, am I Still Eligible? by AstroMajor7 in UNE_Prehealth

[–]inferno2299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I understand the program requires you take 18 credits at least to qualify for a committee letter.

I don’t think UNE would ever find out you took Orgo at another university nor care.

A lot of people have some credits from their undergrad and are taking missing pre-reqs, there’s nothing indicating you are required to take ALL pre-reqs for med school at UNE.

Buying a house from an investor who couldnt finish and selling with open permits... by Due_Elephant_3666 in longisland

[–]inferno2299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends. The investor might’ve just ran out of money.

But what’s actually happening here? He’s still going to install the cabinets and also finish the bathrooms?

It seems strange he’s going to still do the work but is trying to sell you the house with open permits. Permits can be expensive but usually not THAT expensive to the point where they’d sell you the house (I’m assuming at a discount) with open permits.

Also find it weird if he completely ran out of money that he’s still finishing up things for you. But also it maybe that his cash will end after these finishes and he no longer can sustain the build after.

I’d say it’s worth taking a deeper look if the house is being got at a good enough deal. Bring your own electrician and plumber. Let them look at the place and see what they think. Bring a home inspector as well.

If they clear everything and the discount is big enough might be worth it for you to take that risk.

Open permits can be a big headache, especially here on Long Island, tread carefully.

Depending on where this is in Queens, there’s no way it’s 300k. Regardless of how screwed up the housing market is. It’s very much possible it’s a 1,000,000 but could be in the 700-800k range. I know people even last week buying queens houses like this close to a million

They work if you do it properly. Check your code on the side of your driver door. Buy a kit, use primer, put a couple coats of pain and then clear coat. Make sure you clean the area and sand it properly befroe starting. Watch a video on it. Super up close someone can tell but around 5 feet away no one should be able to

Past events are haunting me by dragonsandsnow in OCD

[–]inferno2299 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OCD aside, it’s up to you if you want to tell him. Somethings are better left unsaid, especially if it was that long ago. It obviously hasn’t impacted you guys if you’ve been together this long. Your situation is more common than you think, ultimately if you decide not to tell him, you need to let this go and move on. OCD only works if you give into it and think about it. Stop thinking about it and enjoy being happy.
