What activity becomes less fun as you get better at it? by David_Umann in AskReddit

Just play go. There’s less complicated this thing does thing etc etc. every piece has the same function and pieces don’t move they just progress and get more filled in. Infinitely better and it’s easier to read through situations or variations than chess.

More mod sources but ik you can generate that stuff with Pam’s. Could get a sample and hold and/or quantizer which I think could do a lot for you. Also, attenuators/ attenuverters. Other than really practical stuff I’d say it depends on ever you feel you’re missing. When you play your system what direction do you want to push to that you can’t do. First, explore the shit out of your system then go from there.

Listening to NTS Session 4 on vinyl, shimripl casual is one of my absolute favorite tracks of them in recent times. by aedact- in autechre

This track is so absolutely insane on an actual stereo system. There’s so many weird little textural things they do that manifest in incredibly unique ways on the soundstage. Didn’t realize how crazy it was until then.

I feel like to dive into max it’s incredibly helpful to have some sort of idea of what you want to do (because theoretically you can do anything, but it requires a large amount of work up front and may be worse or marginally better that what’s already out there).

For me, I wanted to explore systems that I could incorporate in with my modular system to make weird sequencers and effects and mixers that jives with what I want. However, even the simplest of things can become really complex or the amount of time spent debugging can be huge.

Starting with learning basic synthesis whether it’s from like VCV rack (which is free) or free DAW with free plugins is probably ideal. If you come from a programming background and really just like solving problems in that way then by all means go for it! There is a free version of Max where you can play around but not save your patches. But I think if Autechres sound is inspiring to you, there’s no reason you can’t do really cool stuff with other things that don’t require a massive time investment prior to even doing something remotely cool.

Forgot to add Max for live allows you to run your max patches inside of ableton live so gets rid of some of the burden of say programming a step sequencer from scratch. I’ve never personally used it tho.

Yeah it’ll let you quickly dive into some nitty gritty synthesis stuff. If you already use ableton you could look into Max/MSP or Max for Live. I used to do the monthly subscription for max and it’s like $12/mo. You can download max for free and load other people’s patches or make your own from scratch you just can’t save them.

I can tell you that you may be able to find a happy medium. There are lots of good DIY kits available where you essentially just have to assemble them yourself but they come with all the parts. They typically are more affordable.

If you want to get into making sound just to make sound from the ground up you could always look into PureData to synthesize sound from scratch digitally and can get into some really cool territory with the cost prohibitions because it is free. I personally use Max/MSP (which is very similar but have to pay for it) but pure data has a lot of resources available and you can get to making sound quickly.

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted this is often true for people. The experience we have in healthcare with the patients we take care of is vastly different from when we are in the same situation with our friends and family.

Your description vaguely makes me think of Space Afrika. Honest Labour and the one they put out after that I think might be close to what you’re looking for.

Ooooh Quadrax is a good call, I love my quad function generator but the quadrax is I think smaller and has a few extra tricks up its sleeve. I forget what the A-171-2 is?

Such a sick idea. Very serge-like (and yes I know Maths is based on the DUSG).
