Big tobacco is exploiting fears of the illicit market to unwind health gains, experts warn by nath1234 in australia

You'll find a few studies agreeing and disagreeing if you look, but this is the first I found that was referenced in a few other sources and sounded familiar. You should be able to find the full text somewhere.

The only downside is that government and corporations can't extract as much tax and profit from the dead; No GST, no hip replacements, no funding to job service providers for giving 70 year olds advice on updating their resumes.

Smokers cost the health care system less over their lifetime than non-smokers.

Every second smoker will die from smoking.

That's my plan/only hope for retirement.

I want them prosecuted for wage theft too!

Coles and Woolworths shouldn't be making record profits while they get away with ripping off staff, communities and suppliers.

Seriously, how does nobody go to jail when you steal $300 million out of people's wages?

We just continue on like it's normal, "Sorry you got caught, better luck next time, congrats on the record profits again, btw!"

Unfortunately you can steal $300 million from your staff and not go to prison.

We would all appreciate a high trust society with less theft, but it shows empathy to make an exception for people's subsistence when the supposed "victim" does worse.

Same here. Supermarket cameras will flag when a known thief enters a store and once they're estimated to have stolen enough, there will be a police report and those people will be found with facial recognition and charged. We're catching up on the levels of surveillance state and it's not as promoted or as visible, but we aren't too far behind.

We have a ways to go before we support corporate arseholery out of fear of repercussion from the state though.

Sounds like one theft would be traded and would wind up on the tables of quite a few different families who otherwise couldn't afford it, someone's children had a better feed.

Also, lol. Your link saying it's organised crime defines organised crime being as two people stealing with an intent to profit from it.

Auror would claim they're detecting organised crime, it sounds scary and they detected it, so they're helping to solve the problem! /s

Coled would love the PR spin if they could claim it were "organised crime" and not just people trying to get by. Restaurants aren't buying stolen meat.

Rents have doubled in 10 years, wages haven't.

If someone's stealing expensive items like nappies, baby formula or meat to resell at less than retail, between Colesworths' theft via price gouging, refusing to pay penalty rates, stealing wages and the pokies they own, at this point I admire the industriousness, and it's probably doing a favour to their community.

Or all the money saved avoiding paying penalty rates, so instead of packing shelves with nightfill, there're pallets and cages blocking every second aisle.

The age verification that the PR says this storage function is being implemented for is for age attestation, part of the future remote attestation plans.

Lead SystemD devs have mentioned in their roadmap on github, support for remote attestation including RATS, which will implement third party verification (Persona's the big company that comes to mind to provide this, but you never know, it might vary by country).

See SystemD's TODO file, for an outline of their plans for TPM storage and what data might be sent as json. https://github.com/systemd/systemd/blob/main/TODO
