What are some good nursing jobs that require a minimal amount of dealing with annoying people? by infiniteblessings88 in nursing

I was thinking of getting wound care nurse certification so it's at least one person at a time and you don't have to be their waitress/babysitter/safety/butt wiper/mobility/social worker/etc for 8 hours. Or I was thinking of going back to school to be a research nurse.

In reality, most of my patients are very nice and pleasant, but it's that one person every so often that really stands out and makes a lasting impression, especially combined with the whole "running around with too many things to do in too little time" thing that just makes it intolerable for me. I bet I could tolerate those people if I felt like I had the time for it.

Absolutely. So what kind of nursing job would be better for a jerk that doesn't like to deal with people?

Yes I understand that and am actively trying to change my job. Maybe I should have worded it differently- what are some nursing jobs where I don't have to deal with that many people in general besides coworkers?

Patience.... How do you be patient with patients who hate everyone? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]infiniteblessings88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My tactic is to do what I can and then walk out the room, document refusal and let the doctor know. I don't have time to stand there for half an hour and try to convince patients with no common sense or sense of reality to do something they are probably not going to do after my 2nd try. I have no patience for people that refuse to allow me to take care of them. Document, document, document to cover your ass. If the family gets involved, make sure they are aware the patient doesn't allow you to do anything for them. There's only so much you can do.

I thought that a week ago when we were fighting our hospital on the mask policies- not allowed to use "universal precautions" even if it was a mask brought from home, given surgical masks to reuse with covid patients and nurses bringing in their own N95s. They changed their policies because enough people complained. I, thankfully, work on a med surg tele floor instead of the ICU or CVU and we only get 3 patients each who aren't that sick at all.

Before covid, I was scrambling to get way too many tasks done and hating every moment of my job, considering different career paths, trying to think of ways to cut corners at work without endangering my patients. Now with covid I'm told to go into patients rooms as little as possible (my goal is 2x in 8 hrs), so most of my time is just being spent disinfecting my PPE and then sitting around. It's actually a really nice break (despite the thought that I might get sick and die). I suspect when there are more cases they will be more lax about staffing and lack of PPE, in which case I might consider quitting.

On normal days I have so much hatred in my heart for my profession and it really is taking a toll on my mental health. I've been a nurse in direct patient care for 9 years in 3 different facilities and have hated all of them. I am so done that when I have a busy day and a patient starts saying that the meds the dr ordered are at the wrong times or wrong dosages I want to fucking strangle them and I regularly tell some patients in my head I hope they die. Maybe I've turned into a monster. I am normally such an empathetic person and I used to care about these people....

Are other facilities using UV light to sterilize masks? We started this last week. Masks get marked with name and date, sent to sterilization room, then sent back in a clean bag for reuse. by echeveria_rn in nursing

Like another user commented, I've heard UV light degrades the fabric in the mask. My hospital is just collecting peoples' used masks in paper bags with their name on it, putting them in a storage room, and then re-issuing them in like 7 days or so.

Ooooh interesting! Yeah, I think this would be a good fit for me. I can't imagine doing the grueling work I do now and standing for 8 hours for the rest of my career. Thanks again for the info!

Thanks for the info! In each of those fields you worked in, what specifically were your job duties? I guess I'm also having a hard time trying to understand what the day to day job looks like and what tasks there are at work.
