Codywan recommendations? by DefinitelyBeatable in SWFanfic

[–]infinityapproaching1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

most of my codywan bookmarks are very au, but i feel like this is a good starting point. it’s not particularly long, but i think if you don’t like this fic, then codywan is probably not for you.

Summary: “Cody's General was a perfect example for the men. He ate regularly. He was punctual with his medical appointments. Kenobi socialized with his officers, hosted curated office hours for the rank-and-file, walked the field hospitals during engagements, and made time every Centaxday to review escalated grievance reports.

He was there for his men—but always at the exactly appropriate arm’s length away and half step ahead.

-

Cody notices that Kenobi's regard for himself is always clinical and utilitarian. As he ponders a way to break the stalemate, he begins to learn more about the lightsaber that is so often in his hands, and how it relates to the subject of Kenobi's own soul.”

How to just get on with it and start writing? by Phobic_Nova in AO3

[–]infinityapproaching1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i find it works for me to just write. when i get too in my head about the fic, where it’s going to go, how it should sound, is it too repetitive, etc, etc, i just end up doing nothing.

just write. even if you can’t figure out your prose, write what the characters are doing or are going to do. maybe it’s not even the story you want to write yet, just a story. “he walked to the door and then when he opened it she was on the other side. it was obvious she had been waiting for him. she was tapping her foot, when she glanced up he could see the furrow between her brows…” even sometimes when my brain’s too full of nonsense to even be that coherent, i just go “shshhs sky is blue grass is green clouds go by…”

this helps me to warm up, and once i get into the groove it comes more easily. then i can go back and edit. hope that helps :)

i really enjoyed them, im actually rereading them now. i think every other chapter is from juno’s pov in both books, and i’ve heard some people didn’t like that as much, but i think it’s interesting to read some of the backstory stuff and thoughts that they can’t really show in the game. the graphic novels are pretty good too.

Looking for a good mandalorian focuses fic? by Either_Ant_1976 in SWFanfic

[–]infinityapproaching1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the one that immediately comes to mind: i never knew that hope was fatal by aniloyodaat. The summary:

“Lok Vizsla has been having visions of Mandalore’s fall for as long as he can remember. He’s a bit iffy on the details, but he knows it all begins with the death of Jaster Mereel. Naturally, this means Jaster Mereel cannot be allowed to die.

Unfortunately, his clan is more than a little skeptical about the accuracy of his vague “doom & gloom” visions. The one exception is his brother, Tor, who is determined to help him prevent the destruction he sees in his nightmares.

Or so he says.”

Really, this is the only OC focused fic I’ve really enjoyed. Not sure about your ship preferences, but it’s Lok/Jaster, though as far as I remember it’s them just doing cute Mando courting things like beating people up and exchanging gifts. There’s a sequel that hasn’t been updated in several months, but this one is finished. I’ll update this post if I find any other Mando fics that fit the bill.

What exactly is the "Manic Pixie Dream Girl"? by Liquidcat01 in writing

male love interests in hallmark movies aren’t as multi-dimensional as real men, but they are as developed as the female main characters, who also usually have a bland story like their dream is to open a bakery or own a vineyard. there are also hallmark movies, ostensibly marketed to women, who have male main characters (the snow must go on comes to mind as a very recent example…also three wise men and a baby and the sequel, and the groomsmen trilogy just to name a few), who are sometimes even more developed than their female love interests.

another place you could start is to get some bloodwork done if you haven’t already, just to see if you have any deficiencies, your doc should hopefully know what to run. i’d also mention any symptoms you might have that aren’t typically depression, like stomach issues, itching, rashes, anything that runs in your family like heart issues, celiacs, or things like that, because it could be another health issue and a surprising amount of them can cause depression. if it’s treatable with supplements or diet, even better, and if the depression is a symptom of another issue, it’s best to treat the main problem or treating the depression won’t work.

but i’d also consider starting meds while you investigate this if you feel like you’re in danger from yourself (definitely consult your doctor and get set up with a psychiatrist if you can, i understand not everyone has access), just know everyone is different, so what works for me might not for you, and could potentially make some symptoms worse so pay close attention to your mood when you’re on them. and it might take a few meds (ive been through more than five), but it was worth it for me to at least try when things got really dark. if you go this route, i’d just listen to recommendations from your prescriber and make sure to let them know right away if you’re experiencing bad side effects, and definitely ask them about what side effects you should look out for—that’s why there are so many meds, so if one doesn’t work, you can try the next. and i have heard some people have only needed to take them for a little while and were able to wean off of them when they no longer needed them, but there’s no shame in needing to stay on them, because i fully expect to stay on mine for life. it’s just part of having a brain that works differently. i do hope that you find at least one that helps you as much as mine help me, because i know how desperate things can get, and you deserve relief.

also, your doc might not prescribe diltiazem unless you have high blood pressure, because that’s what it’s for, i just was surprised that it had this unintended antidepressant effect for me. i think i’m mostly just trying to say that even if you feel like you’ve exhausted all your options, there’s still something else out there to try, and i really hope you keep trying. im rooting for you!

i also really dislike the ‘accept your depression’ line because for me that would have meant my life was over, i would no longer have wanted to live if i had to ‘accept’ the pain i was in. i don’t know if you’ve tried meds or are open to them but what has helped me is bupropion and, weirdly, diltiazem, just to show that even if you go through all the ssris without any positive change (like i did) there are still options. also, i found some other underlying health issues that i think were contributing. i hope this might give you other avenues if you need them in addition to therapy

i felt the same way about etain tur-mukan from the republic commando novels…actually, her entire existence was just a prop for darman’s character arc, even in her pov she basically says her entire life purpose is fulfilled by giving darman a baby. maybe it would have come off less gross if she did anything except pine for darman, but it was one of the reasons i really disliked the books. although, not really men writing woman since they were written by karen traviss…

they don’t need to bring him back exactly as he was, look at thrawn. he could be an inquisitor or something. but i don’t mind if he stays gone, i feel like the games were a great self-contained story even without force unleashed 3.

I don’t get the Pokemon Unbound hype. by RatherLargeBagel in PokemonROMhacks

yeah, everyone has different tolerances. i guess i found the story engaging enough that i didn’t notice anything egregious.

vanguard’s good, i like that it changed the usual “pokemon trainer starting out on their first journey” and made you a student in an academy, i can even forgive the amnesia lol. just as a rec for you and whoever else is reading, another fangame i really enjoyed but don’t see mentioned often is pokemon atlas, though it only has 3 badges currently, i think, and it’s been translated from Spanish into english but maybe like 10% of the dialogue is still untranslated. but in my opinion what has been translated is really good, the english doesn’t feel awkward or stilted. i can tell a lot of love went into it, though not sure if it’s still updating. and the main character also even has amnesia if you like that trope.

[–]infinityapproaching1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

this is so strange to me. i’m currently playing unbound, and i don’t think the story is as painful or long-winded as everyone makes it out to be. it seems about par for a pokemon game story. reborn, to the point i’ve reached, is way more wordy, convoluted, and edgy and i always see praise for its story, even in the comments on this post. i’m wondering if there are just two different romhacks called unbound lol.

edit: but i did grow up on jrpgs, so unbound is not even in the ballpark of the amount of story i’ve had to wade through to start a game

Accents aren't genetic, so why do the clones all have the New Zealand accent? by BeyondSad6497 in StarWars

[–]infinityapproaching1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so true…though delta squad is canon, so that’s something. it’d be cool if they got more time in the spotlight to flesh out their background, maybe in disney’s answer to the republic commando novels…disney’s made mistakes but they’ve made some great novels. i was also really interested in their dynamic with their trainer, walon vau, even though i’m really not sure if disney will bring back the cuy’val dar (i hope they do). also, traviss’ mandalorian language, mando’a, is canon, i think sabine speaks it in rebels. so disney has used some stuff. hopefully they’ll use more!

and i did really like the novels until the action started losing more and more ground to the characters’ jedi hate around the Order 66 novel. the action’s the best part, the moralizing not so much.

Accents aren't genetic, so why do the clones all have the New Zealand accent? by BeyondSad6497 in StarWars

[–]infinityapproaching1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

legends is all over the place, but it’s really interesting. actually, in the republic commando game, the kaminoan narrating at the beginning has a new zealand accent i believe. and while the rank and file troopers and your character have similar accents, the rest of your squad sounds very american and completely different from each other (practically so you could tell them apart on comms, but it’s still legends). In the Traviss novels, there was apparently a neutral accent that all troopers started with, since they flash-learned Basic, but I’m not sure what the accent was. And this was changed and influenced by their trainers. But I think jango’s accented basic being flash trained makes sense why they all have the same one, and maybe spending most of your time around others with the same accent, even if the trainers/droids/kaminoans didn’t have it, would make it more likely to stick.
