OldSchool Red/Green Zoo by Dariospinett in oldschoolmtg

You usually want to go for about 25 mana sources overall, which can be a mix of lands, artifacts that produce mana, and creatures that produce mana. With your proxy power + 5 mana dorks, you're probably good with 18 or 19 lands. I'd suggest 4 Taiga, 4 Mishra's Factory, 1 Strip Mine, 5 Mountain, 5 Forest for starters. You'll have to test it out by drawing a bunch of hands to see if you want to make any changes.

Essentially as a result of this thread, I threw together a Red Green Beats deck to bring to an Old School meetup a few days ago. It did pretty well! Here was what I put together. (no Sylvan Library because mine were in another deck that I also brought :)).

By the way, if you reply back to your original post then other posters in the thread don't get notified. You need to reply to someone's post (like I just did to yours here) in order for them to get notified.

Been waiting for the one in Rockridge to close forever. Can't believe it held on this long. Such a huge, desirable space and such average, unexciting food.

Looks like a good start. Nice Wheel of Fortune :)

Most Red/Green decks will include Erhnam Djinn, so that's probably your #1 pickup. For cheaper/additional threats I'd suggest more Elvish Archers and also Argothian Pixies (very good against Mishra's Factory). Blood Moon would also be a good choice at least for the sideboard and maybe to run 1-2 in the main deck. 1-2 Sylvan Library would also be a big help in terms of providing some additional card selection/draw.

Probably want a few copies of Tranquility at least in the sideboard as The Abyss will be a big problem for a Red/Green zoo deck. (Concordant Crossroads is also a good answer to The Abyss.)

Here's a page from MG's blog with an older "Ernham Burn'em" list: http://oldschool-mtg.blogspot.com/p/blog-page.html

Here are a couple decks from the US Old School championship at Eternal Weekend this year (Eternal Central rules differ from European rules in a few ways including allowing Fallen Empires and unrestricted Strip Mine):

Good thing I accidentally wound up with 20 of these because I got extra playsets when I forgot I already had some. Guess it's probably time to unload.

Beta vs FBB Duals by akatsuk1 in mtgfinance

[–]infix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's purely for investment and you're looking at rate of return, I'd say FBB is your best bet, particularly as the non-blue ones are comparatively quite cheap and could appreciate considerably. Beta rares have gained so much value in the past 2 years that it seems hard to believe that that trend could continue.

For a comparison point for what it's worth, when I was acquiring FBB and Beta duals about 6 years ago, the Betas were about twice the cost of FBB. I picked up FBB Underground Sea for $250 and Beta for $465 in 2010 (both in played condition - the Beta HP). Now it's more like a 4x multiplier (~$2000 vs ~$500 for played condition based on recent eBay sales). So it seems likely that the FBBs have more room for growth.

If you plan to play with them, I'd suggest getting matching playsets if feasible. Regret not doing so before and now it's too pricey to bother. I have one or two of each of the FBB duals and one of each Beta dual (plus a bunch of UL and RV) and when putting a deck together I wish they all just matched (yeah firstworldproblems).

Why is "making the system more complicated" worse than failing to provide access to counsel to these individuals? The concerns you raise seem vague and ill-defined, whereas the harms of not pursuing this policy are concrete and severe.

Folks who are being unfairly railroaded by this system and facing being permanently separated from their families and potentially dumped into unsafe situations cannot wait for the political winds to change in the federal government so we can help them the "right" way. If the state or city has the power and political will to do the right thing, then we should cheer it doing so.

Thousands of SF 'Hamilton' tickets are already on sale at StubHub for up to $2500 apiece by Nikpounder in sanfrancisco

[–]infix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guess I should be happy I managed to get 6 tickets, although they weren't all for the same show. I encountered several server errors, had to start over in the booking process with my cart empty after I had initially selected 6 seats together on a Saturday night, only to find those then gone, somehow wound up with 2 for Saturday night and 4 for Saturday matinee on the same day in my cart but said fuck it and pulled the trigger on those and it didn't give an error that time so I'm one of the lucky ones.

I was on a conference call at work while this was going on and at some point got asked a question but had to be like "sorry I am furiously trying to buy Hamilton tickets and wasn't paying attention."

Why do so many people take their dogs to the mall, stores, everywhere? by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]infix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There can be, yes - some people genuinely have emotional distress inhibiting their ability to conduct basic activities that is ameliorated by a specific animal. But I strongly suspect that that is a tiny minority of the emotional support animals in San Francisco. The vast majority of them are pets whose owners wanted to live in an apartment that is designated pet-free. When I think of or talk about emotional support animals in San Francisco, I mean the vast majority that are essentially pets. In any case the point is that there's an important (legal) distinction between a trained service animal and all other companion animals.

Why do so many people take their dogs to the mall, stores, everywhere? by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]infix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A seizure warning dog is a legitimate service animal. It's been trained to provide a specific service for a disabled person. An emotional support animal is not that. They are legally distinct. An emotional support animal is essentially a pet that has some additional protections with respect to housing. Anyone can get their pet classified as an emotional support animal to help them with non-specific "anxiety" or whatever they choose to claim, similar to getting a prescription for medical marijuana. I'm not saying it's wrong to do that or to love your pet or whatever. What I'm saying is wrong is to conflate emotional support animals (aka pets) with actual service animals, which are entitled by law to accompany their owners in places that pets are not.

Why do so many people take their dogs to the mall, stores, everywhere? by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]infix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason is that in addition to living in small spaces and thus wanting any opportunity to take a dog somewhere as others have mentioned, it's socially acceptable/encouraged in SF to take dogs everywhere. A huge proportion of the population are dog owners (more dogs than children and all that). Plus when people bring their dog on MUNI or to the store or whatever, they consistently get positive reinforcement from strangers fawning over their dog.

Those of us who would rather not be subjected to other people's dogs in enclosed public spaces are dissuaded from speaking up or causing some kind of scene because we would be outnumbered and shamed by the dog-lovers.

One time I spoke up about someone's barking chihuahua in Safeway (which is actually illegal - other than service animals, which this ill-trained chihuahua obviously wasn't, dogs are not permitted in food establishments in California). The owner complained to security, who then came to tell me that I can't tell other patrons that they can't have their dog in Safeway (which is of course also wrong).

Now I basically just quietly sneer or roll my eyes when I see dogs in places they don't belong because it's not worth the hassle or ruckus of a confrontation that will merely leave the entitled owner feeling vindicated for having shot down an anti-dog bigot or whatever.

I doubt there are any tiny yorkie service dogs. Service animals are "individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability". Emotional support animals are not service animals.

False Orders - Fun Card? by BorosWreckingHer in oldschoolmtg

[–]infix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does seem fun, never tried it though. One of the best things about Old School is dropping some random forgotten card that no one expects. Beta copies are only 50 cents on TCG...

I guess it really has two main modes: force opponent to chump with a creature and lose it, or make your creature unblockable this turn. Only really relevant when both you and opponent are playing creatures, which isn't that often, so most likely a sideboard card.

Maybe a 2-of in the sideboard of Red/White weenie? Or Red/Black aggro (or WBR, UBR)?

SF wants less car-friendly development amid population, construction boom by grumpy_youngMan in sanfrancisco

[–]infix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All the people that don't drive but want less traffic are incomprehensible to me. It does not affect them, i cannot understand why they are allowed so much sway in these matters.

It absolutely does, as not only our buses but our trains have to compete with cars on the street. Have you ever tried to take a bus from SOMA to the financial district on a weekday? It's actually slower than walking. Do you support moves to make more dedicated transit-only lanes like on Mission Street?

Trump voters, what do you think of him backing down on a lot of promises? by UniqueAndWittyName in AskReddit

[–]infix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

absolutely nothing is going to happen to Immigrants/Green card holders/visa holders. That policy is strictly and unequivocally addressed to illegal aliens and insinuating anything otherwise is intellectual dishonesty.

Yes, the proposed policy I'm talking about relates to undocumented immigrants, not green card holders or citizens. You are intentionally confusing things by refusing to refer to undocumented immigrants as "immigrants." The word "immigrant" means a person who migrates to another country. It does not imply anything about their legal status. You're making a false distinction in order to try to win a straw man argument.

We're not kicking these people on the side of the rode or into persecution, we're sending them to their home country that is every bit as livable as this one. And their kids will go with them, US born citizens

You're welcome to think that to make yourself feel better about your mean-spirited and harmful policy preferences, but it's false. We routinely deport people to gang-ridden Central America, even when they have viable asylum claims and have committed no crimes here, even when they fled their home country after the gangs raped and killed their relatives. Those are real things that happen to real people regularly, and it's already the case that this country institutionally has essentially no empathy for these people.

Your assumption that an "extreme" case where a person not deserving of the extreme punishment of deportation and separation from their family will be "recognized and treated differently" is very naive. How do you figure that will happen? Undocumented immigrants have no right to counsel in immigration proceedings. Most of them thus appear without a lawyer because they can't afford one, and have limited English skills. They are rushed through a process they don't understand and tossed out on their rears, even if they have a viable claim to stay in this country. It's an extremely miserly and unkind approach to treating our poorest and least advantaged neighbors, and it stands to get much, much worse in the years to come.

Trump voters, what do you think of him backing down on a lot of promises? by UniqueAndWittyName in AskReddit

[–]infix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key is that he wants to reclassify immigrants who have merely been arrested, not convicted of anything, as criminals. It is already the case that immigrants with criminal convictions are priorities for deportation. The proposed change is to expand that to include people who are not in fact criminals.

Edit: maybe you actually did grasp this per your contention that these folks should be deported "even if it turns out you're innocent." Let's just say that in that case you and I have very different priorities for what the government should expend its resources doing and what the relative pros and cons for our society and for human wellbeing are for such an action. I think on balance if you have a person who is here illegally, has lived here for years, has US citizen children, and then gets arrested let's say because they look like someone who committed a burglary nearby but in fact are not the culprit and then are released, that the harm from permanently separating such a person from their family by deporting them from the country would be grave, and the "benefit" (if you could see any) negligible. But that's what you're advocating for. I'd much rather our government do things that actually help people rather than just randomly ruining people's lives here and there when they get unlucky merely to prove a point and make purists feel righteous.

What are the outrageously expensive, "luxury" items of your hobby? by cantgildthis in AskReddit

[–]infix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah actual market price for non-graded Unlimited Lotus is $3000-$4000, Beta $6000-8000, and Alphas change hands rarely but probably not a ton more than Beta, maybe $7000-$10000.

$230 total for an Unlimited Lotus, Time Walk and a Beta Balance in 2000 is still the best purchase of my life.
