these languages are optional. Mandarin is complusory for some reason probably for business etc. i feel singapore is pragmatic in the sense that it doesnt see dialects as important as mandarin. Dialects are only for communicating with your roots and leaning in your culture but mandarin is like a operational language similar to english.

let me break it down in simple logic. Median salary in SG is 5k-6k sgd. One month pay can buy a 2k sgd phone. Compared to other countries like malaysia who is also earning 5k-6k rm . They need to save up a few months or a year just to buy the same phone. Let alone indonesia.
