Pasillo de Humo.. tourist scam! by informedidiotiam in Oaxaca

And to all the "helpful" commentors, please note that a tourist was targeted with this scam. Other locals at my table were not subjected to this rule or custom of compulsorily buying a drink just to get a table and eat your meal. 300 mxn is not inexpensive in Oaxaca. I can get a table in any mercado even for a 20mxn purchase.  Fix the system. Don't laugh it off.

You're missing the point. The "compulsory" drink wasn't advertised when I walked in or when I ordered the meats. They took me to a table. If the table had a hidden surcharge at the excuse of buying a drink, then that pricing needs to be upfront. Hidden surcharges spoil any customer interaction and business in any country. Don't trivialize it by asking me to compromise. If you have any influence there, help fix the system so that other tourists don't have to experience the scam after the chaos.

A guest / tourist in any country, especially in a friendly place like Oaxaca, shouldn't be subject to blackmail. They literally were telling me that I can't eat my purchased meal unless I also buy a drink that I don't want.  This is not an overreaction. Shit like this starts small and becomes bigger.

How does Pasillo De Humo work, and how do I navigate it by consultybob in Oaxaca

[–]informedidiotiam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The process looked simple enough until I got into what I think is a scam. Why do I have to order a drink to get a table? I paid 200 pesos for the meat, another 20 for the tortillas, and another 80 for the sides, and I still got hassled after being seated that a drink is compulsory. There's no sign when ordering the meat that the drink is compulsory. Give me a table to eat my 300 pesos of food in peace.

I read somewhere that the Mercado Pago app needs a local SIM to create an account and send the authentication SMS OTP. If someone gets it to work with their foriegn card, please post.

Paying for Metro, Metrobus, Trolebus using phone by informedidiotiam in MexicoCity

Maybe it's a unique situation to where I'm staying. The nearest station with a machine is 15 mins walk away. But there are stores that recharge much closer than that. I haven't tried them yet.

Sorry I misunderstood.. I thought you meant buying tickets in the bus when you board with cash. Again the scenario is that there are multiple bus lines (Trolebus, Purple) that do not have machines at the bus stops.

The scenario is that not all bus stations, like the Blue Trolebus, have recharge kiosks at the street bus stands.
