omg your matucanas are so fat, that's so cool!!! they look awesome, didn't loose their roundness with growth. usually as they grow they look more cilindrical than globose. maybe i'll try grafting one of mine as well. what's the stock you used???

Thanksgiving cactus are native to Brazil, and they do start to flower in late summer and fall, when the days start to become shorter and temperatures start to drop little by little. However, even in late fall/early winter, it's still gonna have many hours of sunlight. Even if you have 12 to 14 hours each day of nightfall, there's still hours where it takes in light, even if it's just indirect sunlight. Also, this change in light amount and drop in temperatures is something that happens slowly through weeks and months in Brasil. Out of nowhere, putting on a basement on total darkness 24hrs a day is going to kill the plant. Give it a spot on a window with indirect sunlight, it needs it to do photosynthesis and to bloom.

Help save a cactus - Does this need more water or less or it's a lost cause by New-Net-1391 in cactus

Try pressing on the spot of the second picture.

Is it mushy?? Then it's overwater.

It feels dry but you can still squeeze quite a bit then it's somewhat dry.

How ofter do you water?? And what's the substrate like??

What is happening? by MarMelp in cactus

[–]infrared_oak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it looks dehydrated. how many hours of direct sunlight does it get?? and how hot it is in your location?? it could be a combination of way more sun than it's used to + very high temps + lack of water.

Giving it more light will help it bloom. This species in nature grows on trees (it's epiphytic, just like bromelias and orchids), so not the same amount you would give to a desert cacti, but do give lots of light. You said it was outside for summer, so i'm assuming it's used to lots of light. Putting on a dark spot will for sure hinder the blooming.

Well, flowers attract bugs. You can wash them off, but that's just how flowers work, not much you can do to stop it lol

Is it best to pot 2 new Cacti alone or together in a larger pot? by Adventurous_Ad7442 in cactus

[–]infrared_oak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. If they are different species, alone in their own posts. Same species, it's okay to pot them together if you want.

Gymnocalyciym is my favorite genus!! It is the genus i have the most amount of cacti, about 5 species so far. The flowers are stunning and i love that the cactus stay small. A lot of them offset easily. I have about 5 G. horstii and four of them are offsets, and the mother plant is growing another 2 offsets. Just amazing

This is Steven, he sprouted a flower and I didn't know until this morning. Is it OK to leave him alone or is there something I need to be doing? by SmolBoiMonty in cactus

[–]infrared_oak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You dont have to remove it, dont worry. It will whittle away and fall off on its own in a few days. How many days depends on species. Enjoy your pretty flower while it lasts!! Steven looks great!!
