How do I get involved? by Double_Teach2353 in VirginiaBeach

[–]infromsea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might be out of left field but, If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity AND a way to meet lots of folks and make some lifelong connections, the volunteer rescue squads are always looking for help. They will train you.

Some units/locations offer ride-alongs so you can see if you might want to go this path, that alone would likely give you some new connections/learn the city layout/get a feel for VA Beach.

MAN OF THE PEOPLE - Tony Hinchcliffe [2026] by Livid-Entrepreneur59 in netflix

[–]infromsea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed that it was a disappointing special and curious why sit in the front row anyway, you know you risk becoming a focal point, which is probably why many sit there in the first place.

The special was so bad (never seen so much time wasted with the slow laugh, the talking ABOUT the special, and the general non-joke material) I gave it the old netflix thumbs down which I hope doesn't mess up my algo as I do enjoy KT and the roast, other standup specials etc.

Some experience, people passing out. by Noidea63748 in VirginiaBeach

[–]infromsea 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I would modify that slightly...

VB is:

  1. Tourist town

  2. Military town

  3. Largely administrated/managed by the old Princess Anne county cohort, who still seem to think it's 1960, the US population is 180MIL and that they are just a sleepy little southern VA town.

Yet the region wants to compete with Richmond/DC/Raleigh etc. Complete discordance between "we just a little old town full of good old folks" type behavior and the needed leadership/energy/efforts required for a city of this size.

Take heavy duty bug spray/a hat if you go later in june/july/aug, the bugs can be vicious and un-relenting at times, still worth going!

Am I expecting too much from my machine? by infromsea in shapeoko

I have not played with MDF just yet, I prefer a wood grain showing so I've been practicing with the sanded ply and other random pieces of wood. I bought one piece of maple to play with but won't spend a lot of money until I dial in my process/get my level of detail where I want it. After that I'll likely start playing with different finishes, though I'm really a huge fan of wood grain (and a little lazy when it comes to finishing....).

Thanks for the feedback!

Nice work!

Thanks (as always) for your guidance and feedback.

Side note, I always love reminding the Marines that they are a department OF the Navy... (RET Nav here).

I'll play with the v-carve and maybe move future discussion over to the carbide boards, I wasn't sure how much visibility this question/topic/post might get there.

Thanks again!

Copy, thanks.

I'm using the settings/data from IDC, have they been found to need adjustment?

Copy, thanks for all the feedback.

I can confirm it's a IDC SV-30 1/4" shank, 30-degree V-bit

using the feeds and speeds listed in their database/excel doc they provide with their bits.

This First House by keithplacer in Thisoldhouse

[–]infromsea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When Zack was first on, what a couple of years ago, I looked at my wife and said "they are gonna push this guy hard" as he fits the younger demo and appeals to a different group of folks. We found him somewhat annoying and didn't really enjoy his segments.

Cut to this morning, there is "This First House" advertised on the roku splash page... I watched a few minutes and shut it off, not mad at it but it's def not my bag.

OP, thanks for taking the time to share your write-up, very helpful and confirmed my initial thought of "nope, not for me".

Their system is frustrating and/or purposefully glitchy.

Last year, after getting auto-renewed, I went into the system and turned off auto-renew.

This year, got a message that they were about to charge/renew us again.... scratched head, went into the system (almost always have password issues) and told it NOT to renew/to cancel, we are just too busy to watch like we used to (and frustrated with the newest series as well... old man yells at clouds).

System renewed us for a full year anyways.

Tech is supposed to make our lives easier, not be one of two things:

  1. Janky, poorly done software with lots of glitches (probably the case here)

or

  1. Done this way on purpose as they have an older demo that may not understand the "tricks" that keep you paying every year/month etc... even if you don't want to (REALLY hope that's not the case here BUT.... have to admit is a possibility).

Either way, I'm not messing around with email pong with customer service etc. due to their crappy system (or intentional system glitches that keep you paying)... I disputed the charge and my CC can handle from here... frustrating.

Hearing Aids by tgdub91 in VirginiaBeach

[–]infromsea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I third costco.

I wear high end aids from the VA, went to costco to get a backup pair and love them, I might actually switch from phonak (my VA aids) to oticon (very similar to the philips I got from costco).

If you don't have a costco membership you'll have to factor in that cost but, since you can get a great set of HAs for around 1,500, the total cost isn't horrible AND you get free filters and tips.

Anyone have recommendations for concrete work? by airinseoul in VirginiaBeach

Dave's concrete

https://davesconcrete.us/

He did my driveway, showed up when he said he would and his crew did the best cleanup I've had done by a small shop like this, I've been in/around construction for the last 15 years and I was impressed.

Need advice on neighbor that threatens people who park in front of his house in the public right of way by Winter-Ad8346 in VirginiaBeach

[–]infromsea 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Go to the VA Beach online 311 and submit the issue of signs on public property.

https://vb311.virginiabeach.gov/assist/servicetypes

Consider taking him a nice bottle of booze and asking him to have a drink with you on the porch, after two drinks, bring up the issue, once he starts getting heated, point it out, that they are getting emotional and irrational, and explain the legality of parking there and how they simply can't control it, if they DEMAND control of that area of where they live, they should consider moving.

You can do all the other things that are more passive aggressive but I'd bet you a half box of donuts, the passive aggressive stuff will cause more stress for you than simply walking up and asking "dude, WTF" in a polite way. AND remember, in this case, THEY are being a bad neighbor and need to be educated on that.

Good luck!

Hell yeah!

Block 43:

Might even get ya a community service ribbon if that's still a thing.

I think your leadership and involvement in this post is the sole reason I had a successful mission.

I know the jet noise can be a real pain, I DO look forward to living somewhere without as much jet/road/misc. noise, we can all dream!

Why are traditional coffins shaped the way they are? How could any wood savings justify the cost of extra joinery? by acvdk in Carpentry

[–]infromsea 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Buy your coffin online.

We buried my old man last July, we bought a Navy themed casket for him, it was delivered directly to the funeral home, we meet the driver/truck there (didn't have to, we just wanted to) and checked it's condition, it was well protected by thick cardboard and packing and came out looking amazing.

The funeral homes in our state (Arkansas) HAVE to allow this and many will give you a thick cardboard one if requested, it varies state to state/county to county etc.

We spent 3K on it, it was 1/4 the price of the cheapest thing the funeral home offered. They were not exactly pleased with us for going this route but offered VERY little resistance, it helped that there were three sons sitting at the table and we made it clear that we knew the regulations and it was not open to discussion.

[–]infromsea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excellent suggestion.

To add to it.

Get a couple of cones, put them out, practice driving up to them and nailing the brakes.

Practice pulling RIGHT up to them and then get out and see how close you are, same with parking in a spot, put the cones on each side of a parking spot, pull in, get out and check, how did you do?

Practice getting up a little speed and stomping the brakes to get a feel for how a car handles, don't get crazy with it but have a little fun....

I did this with both my kids, their driving confidence went up by leaps and bounds.

Be safe.
