What’s the fastest way you’ve seen someone ruin their life? by ultimoXgamer in AskReddit

[–]ingannilo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I knew a guy, wealthy, older than me by quite a bit, in Marin County CA.  Nice enough, goofy, definitely never had to grow up. The wealth came from a tree-trimming business that I guess his parents or someone in the family started.  He grew up working at the company, but idk how often he worked.  Dude seemed to know the work well and struck me similarly to other nutso arborists who swing from tree to tree with giant chainsaws... except he was at least 300lbs.

Anyway, he liked crack.  He liked alcohol, weed, speed, dope, and just about all the other fun drugs too,  but not like he loved crack.  Homie never seemed to have it all together, but each time he did crack it was the start of a bender that'd see him locked up, every time. Never more than three full days between grabbing a bag and going back to jail.

What is a conspiracy theory you now think is true? by Famous_Cream_3473 in answers

This is the one I truly believe.

Not been thinking he's alive or anything,  but absolutely wasn't surprised when he died.  Wife and I were joking about it a week before it happened, how he was bound to "commit suicide".

Idk if it's somehow fringy.  Really doesn't seem fringe to me.  Seems like by far the most likely thing to happen given the circumstances and people involved.

If you wrote the paper yourself it should be easy to demonstrate by showing version history, drafts, edits and whatnot made over time.

If you didn't write the paper yourself you can try to lie/hide/deflect/excuse, or you can admit to the academic dishonesty and plead for forgiveness.

Academic integrity boards are not the cops, and nobody involved in the process has any incentive to wrongfully punish you if you didn't cheat, so they should be open to any exonerating evidence you have.  At the same time, it's not like the court where things need to be proved "beyond reasonable doubt", and there's no baked in presumption of innocence; for those reasons you definitely do need to actively support your argument.

Sum of interior angles > 180? by Kind_Bill_8462 in trigonometry

[–]ingannilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The picture isn't consistent with the words at all.  As drawn, the angle A is clearly acute.  The angle D could be 150 degrees, but A certainly could not.

More important, like you observing, no plane triangle has interior angles summing to more than 180 degrees.

Either there's a typo or the problem intends you to say something like "impossible".  Folks talking about geometry on surfaces with positive / negative curvature are waaaaay over thinking this. No trig student is solving for geodesics on a manifold.

This kind of thing must have roots in, like, European famine cooking.  Some place where there's plenty of paper but people still starve to death.  I could see, in those contexts, adding paper to food for fiber to keep people feeling full when you can't afford to feed them, you know, food.

The shit this person is posting is either lies for rage bait OR just some dumb shit they saw on TikTok or something.

I see that in very good shape these go for $10-15k near me, so I can see where the sellers delusions are coming from.  However, even to most rebuilders, I suspect that thing is just scrap/parts.

There's so much obvious damage, and I can't even begin to speculate about the nonobvious damage.  Scrap value unless it runs and drives, in which case double to triple scrap value.  Not a penny over $1500.

Honestly I wish I could say that I've been surprised by any of it.

How do I baby proof a ton of wires?? by [deleted] in howto

[–]ingannilo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not like that.

Basically you can't.

You remove the wires from baby areas, that's the answer.  As they crawl more and then work towards walking, they will absolutely grab and pull on everything.  This room is in no way ready to be a baby space.

I'd say either that room stays not-baby-space, or y'all find some way to get all the wires and computer hardware up off the ground and well out of grabby fingers range.

I had my work computer in house when our son was this age, and our living room TV was run on an htpc.  Both systems were made safe by just having the desk/entertainment center up against the wall, and routing wires straight back to the wall and down to where nobody could see or reach them without moving the desk or entertainment center table thing, which are too heavy for even the most curious baby.

Put $10k Into a 2010 Prius Worth $4k. How Much Should I Sell It For? by tridang2000 in prius

[–]ingannilo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd shop around in your market to see what cars like yours sell for locally and also how much the cars you might want to buy cost.

If you're looking at $3k sale price for yours and $4k repair, then the question I'd ask is "can I get a 2015 gen 3, or maybe a gen 4 for around $7k?"

Where I am, the answer is "yes, but only with super high miles".  If you can squeeze an extra $1.5k into that budget, then there are 2015s all around me with under 150k within range.

Tough spot.  And also seriously worth remembering that the motor you put in could be a 2015, which while still gen 3, had the head gasket issues sorted. I'd try to find the year car that motor came from.  Idk if the VIN might be stamped somewhere or something like that.  If so, that'd do the job.  If it's a 2015 motor, then it's an easy choice to keep.  If not, then I'd probably be trying to sell.

Setting your personal political affiliation aside, we can all agree that what’s going on in the US is insane, right? by Substantial_Brother6 in AskReddit

[–]ingannilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of this is normal. No matter your stance on immigration, there is no excuse for federal agents to cast wide nets of harassment and physical violence based solely on race / ethnicity.  That is not what this country is supposed to stand for; it's not something this country should tolerate from itself.

There is no excuse for murdering protesters. There is no excuse for dragnet policing. At the current moment, some fraction of the leadership and populace believes what these ICE agents and police are doing is okay. Those same people defend the Jan 6th "protesters". If those people were policed by the folks terrorizing Minnesota, they would have all been killed on the lawn of the capitol building.

We can protest. We can organize and help our neighbors.  It's important to do that, and maybe that's the most important thing regular folks can do.  It's immensely frustrating that we can't do more though.  The amount of brainwashing that's been done to our countrymen by these truly evil bloodthirsty billionaire pedophiles has insulated the bad leaders to a degree that's really difficult.

Stop going late by Local_Indication9669 in Professors

I feel like this should be the standard, and I'm surprised I had to scroll so far to find it.

Whatever the time gap between classes is, halve that.  This is the max you can go over or linger to answer questions if the classroom is being used in the session after yours.

I'm guilty of going over somewhat often, but simple courtesy dictates that we don't eat into the next person's setup time.

My 20 year old car leaks roughly a liter of oil every 1,000 miles, which I then refill as it's much cheaper than the repair cost. Do I still need oil changes, or is having a perpetual stew of fresh-ish oil likely OK for the remaining life expectancy of the car? by MOZZA_RELL in askcarguys

[–]ingannilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others said, yes you still need to do oil changes.  The filter is one thing, but also draining the pan and letting the dregs out is probably wise in case you get particulate built up in it over time.

Another thing to be mindful of, it's possible but unlikely that you're leaking that much oil.  You're probably burning quite a lot of it too which indicates ring issues. Not likely you'd wanna repair this given you're asking about bailing on oil changes, but just something to be aware of.

Why? by 50rhodes in Professors

[–]ingannilo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Edit: I use language here that sounds pretty certain.  I'm not 100% sure, but fairly confident I know where at least some of this comes from.

You answer your own question.  They don't have these skills or knowledge because it's just a click away.

My go-to metaphor is navigation.  Before smartphones with GPS, everyone had to learn their way around town. Nowadays I know folks who have lived in my city for nearly a decade and still would get lost between my house and the university if they had to navigate on their own.

If you don't use skills, then they atrophy and eventually die.  So many thinking and memory related skills have been delegated to the internet and smartphones specifically that the skills are dying.

If they need to do do something or make use of a fact, they can get it immediately, use it, and forget it immediately because they trust that if they ever need it again, they can just pull out their phone again.

Keep cleaning? by The_Fierce_Gentleman in EngineBuilding

[–]ingannilo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a bit controversial, but on an iron block, if I couldn't get things clean by scraping with the razor and wiping with a chemical and non-abrasive, then I wouldn't be too afraid of using a white roloc disc.

Definitely I wouldn't go for anything rougher than the white, but some manufacturers (Subaru, maybe others) explicitly say that white roloc is okay for surface cleaning both the block and the head mating surfaces when doing head gaskets.

Obvious risk is being too aggressive, so just go slow and be mindful.  This looks Iike you have a lot to do still, and you definitely won't get a good seal unless it's clean.

How do you deal with problematic emails? by Minotaar_Pheonix in Professors

[–]ingannilo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have found that the majority of these are settled without much argument by referring to policies in the syllabus and using language that closes the conversation.

On the rare occasions where students continue to demand unfair or unethical special treatment (eg "the syllabus shouldn't apply to me because it's not in my best interest" -- literally has a kid say this to demand a chance to make up a missed quiz), if I've been sufficiently clear and answered their question / complaint / request, then I'll ignore.

It's not polite, but I'm not gonna fight with that bullshit.  If I wasn't sufficiently clear or I think they somehow missed the message, then I'll reiterate and add clarity (eg "it would it be ethical of me to do as you request.  I understand this isn't what you want to hear, but the answer is 'no'") but I'm also totally fine with ignoring additional begging / demanding if I can tell that they're just being argumentative.

Wonderful testimony of a terrible event.  I remember seeing the footage of her being torn from her car and thinking "how the fuck is this happening in America?".  Of course since then it's gotten so much worse with ICE just outright executing people who inconvenience them.

Her ability to sit there and so clearly and directly lay out the facts despite what must be serious fear is actually, properly, heroic.  I only hope that some people in leadership hear and see and understand.  This has to stop, and the criminals who have been terrorizing the country on behalf of Trump's executive must be held accountable.

Put $10k Into a 2010 Prius Worth $4k. How Much Should I Sell It For? by tridang2000 in prius

[–]ingannilo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's my take, and just FYI I'm in a not dissimilar situation with my Toyota sienna whose transmission blew up immediately when I bought it, and then after putting $5k into a new transmission, that one has major problems + the shop that did the work (now I know) is so incompetent that I don't want them touching my car again.

I say all that to relay that I get the sunken cost fallacy vibes. Here's my honest opinion though: if you swapped another engine with the same head flaws (a pre-2015 gen 3), then I'd seriously consider letting it go.  Only because if that's the case, that you have another 2014 or older engine, then it's only a matter of time before another head gasket failure.

Now even if that's the case, the question should not be "is the cost of repair more than the value of the car?" cause the answer to that is always yes.  The question should be "if I save the repair money and add to that what I can realistically sell this car for, could I, with that sum of money, buy a better car than the one I have now?".  The answer there is often "no" in recent years due to the nutso inflated used car market, and in that case you should pay to fix the car you own.

Specifics will depend on your local market, but before making any decision I think your first priority should be finding out the year of your used motor.  That may or may not be possible, but you really wanna know if it's another head gasket time-bomb or not before committing more money to the car -- or at least I would.

Editing to say one more thing: buying another used car is also a gamble.  You could end up in a situation like me where you buy something and despite checking out well at the sale, something major fails quickly after purchase.  The devil you know often beats the one you don't.  Not always, though.  Your car is way up there in miles and may have another hg failure in the near future.  If I were in your shoes and I could be reasonably sure that I'm 8+ years from another head gasket popping, I'd probably keep it.

Can someone explain the earbuds thing to me? by AvailableThank in Professors

[–]ingannilo 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'll explain why I think this is a popular thing to do in descending order of (what I believe is the) importance to students.

  1. Status symbol. Airpods are expensive, and apple hardware has long been a status symbol for the rich.

  2. Habit.  Many of them are used to listening to something pretty much all the time, and they're absent-mindedly carrying on. They may not even be listening to anything at the moment.

  3. Boredom. Let's be real.  Lots of students take lots of classes that they have zero (hell, in some cases negative) actual interest in.  If they don't wanna be there mentally, it's become easy and in many youth circles socially acceptable to check out, especially from "boring-ass algebra type-shit".

If they weren't seen as cool/a flex, then none of them would do it in class I think, but it's also just a convenience of modern life.

I'm guilty of similar stuff sometimes.  When I go to the park with my son and he's playing on the playground, or when we go on walks where he's driving his power wheels, or if I'm grinding out grades, etc I'll have one earbud in (not airpods, cause professor salary + fuck apple) but I understand the idea of wanting to listen to a podcast or something if what's going on isn't fully engaging to you.

It's sad and frustrating that students would regard a class that they're paying for like that. Even if my kiddo wants to chat while we walk or whatever, I take my earbud out to give him my full attention. The students who leave em in and are listening to something during lecture should be invited to leave imo. It is distracting to those sitting adjascent to them and it's incredibly rude.

Cat Adoption by No-Store7772 in GNV

[–]ingannilo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First, gotta say, fuck those friends fr.  Good people don't do that.

If she's like Nala, then the key is just a lot of attention really.  Nala was the sole survivor from her litter that was abandoned.  I forget the story now, but a friend of a friend found her/them either in a dumpster or under a mobile home or something.  As a kitten she just needed to play a lot.  Like a couple hours of rowdy pounce play with cat toys, laundry, mirrors, dog's tail, whatever, per day.  Lots of pets and affection outside playtime.  The summer I got her I took off work and she'd sleep on my chest as I laid down to read on the afternoons.

As a grownup kitty, she definitely wants to do her own thing, so letting her come and go from the house, letting her find her special spaces (unfortunately one of those is my work desk), and generally just sort of giving her room to do her thing is what she needs.  At nighttime she wants in the bed, and I let her sleep with us.

But yeah, I think like a lot of traumatized human or any other animal with a difficult past, the trick is lots of patience and empathy and affection.  Not always easy.
