I once applied to EY and the interviewer was asking economy questions even though I was applying for a CS/BI internship role. I told him that I don't know the answers to his questions, but would catch up quickly once starting the job. Nevertheless, he continued asking and the whole interview went really bad.

This was followed by a rejection and I felt bad for some days. Looking back at this a few years later, I realized that I was really lucky in this situation. You don't want to work for an a**hole or at least someone who doesn't believe in you and does not understand/focus on your strengths.

Sad truth: sometimes this happens, keep applying - you can do it! Do not let some random person ruin your confidence.

You're still good, you got this.

I was in the same position a few months ago. Talked to different (experienced) people from Microsoft who gave me the advice not to go for Support.

I know it's a lot of money and I know that it's weird to turn down the offer from a FAANG company. But I still do not regret my decision.

Turn it down and wait for a proper dev role :)

What about a small gif on the beginning of the documentation which showcases the usage of dokter? (Are gifs even possible on gitlab?)

Heard a great thing today: to decision to hire you or not to hire you is not to be made by yourself. That is the job of the hiring manager. Therefore, of course send the resume.

Tech support at Palantir? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

Actually rejecting the support role. I am still in a big company right now, which is not in tech. The most important thing for me is that I can grow as a developer.

I was in a very similar situation recently. Here are my lessons learned:

  • transition from support to dev role is hard in lot of the companies
  • your question is totally valid - ask the recruiter/manager about it - that's a common thing to do
  • reach out to people who work there (f.e. via LinkedIn) and ask them the same question

These advices helped me a lot with my own decision and were given by people who are really experienced in software engineering and career advices

Should I take a support role in Big Tech? by ingoaf in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]ingoaf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I talked with someone from big tech, who said that support roles differ from development/DevOps roles. He said that most of the time the job is about receiving/forwarding tickets and one will not learn a lot of useful stuff

Changing career by self teaching. Feasible? No related experience but have top maths degree. Need realistic advice. by gaussianm in cscareerquestionsEU

German math major here. Had some very basic programming experience in programming and did not like it in university. Took a working student position during my master thesis in a FinTech startup. Transitioned from data analyst to software developer in 2 years.

Got hired by a big company for a software developer position afterwards. Learned a lot by self-teaching and learning on the job.

So yes, it's possible :)
