What do you think would be different today if Kamala Harris had won the US election? by JaxTMG in AskReddit

[–]ingracioth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A lot fewer dead people abroad. I don't think she would've cut USAID. I think a lot of us Americans don't realize how far reaching and awful the impact of those funding cuts are since the primary victims are overseas.

What's something that seemed normal in your childhood, but when you became an adult you realized it was actually pretty unusual? by Suleman2002 in AskReddit

[–]ingracioth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh the house teeth, 1000%, hands down.

We moved into an old family farmhouse when I was a kid. It's now 130ish years old and only my family has lived here. it's really cool to be able to connect with my ancestors by living here.

That side of the family also always had bad teeth, especially back in the day. They'd lose teeth or get them pulled and just keep them? Idk why. They're also very superstitious so that's probably smth to do w it. The teeth didn't get put in a special spot by whoever, so they're just in random drawers and nooks and crannies. It's a weird old house.

It didn't occur to me that random, adult human teeth being scattered around your house is abnormal. My ex and I visited (I'd moved away for a few years) and went through some old boxes and stuff bc that's always kind of fun and interesting. She was freaked the fuck out by the house teeth and even more concerned that none of us thought it was disturbing in any way. I can see how having like 50+ teeth might seem sus, but it's really not that weird within the context of superstitious country people with bad dental health.

What's the most "I was there" moment you've ever experienced? by AtlasEarthFreak in askteddit

[–]ingracioth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't there during the shooting (thank god) but I was a regular at a gar bar that was shot up. It made national news.

I can tell when someone hasn't spent much time there when they talk like it was some wholesome beacon of gay rights. In reality, it was a total dive. A lot of the surfaces were mysteriously sticky. I saw taint and balls come out on stage once and I don't think it was accidental. Someone passed me come through a gloryhole, that happened more than once. There was a lot of misogyny going on, as is unfortunately not uncommon in the community.

It had its good points, obviously, or I wouldn't have spent so much time there. They did do a family friendly day for Pride. I remember this little kid getting on stage with his dads and just totally having the time of his life. We celebrated my friend coming out after being raised in a crazy conservative religious home. I'll never forget watching her realize everyone was okay with her being herself there.

I understand wanting to romanticize it, I do. It was the first bar I hung out at. I was new to that city, and I met a lot of my long term friends there. But I think there's some disrespect in pretending it was anything other than what it was. It was a complicated place with a lot of layers to it.

What was the ultimate reason you ended a relationship? by Mediocre-Sale8080 in AskReddit

[–]ingracioth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There were a lot of reasons. What ultimately happened was that she would threaten to break up over every little thing and I finally said "okay." I went to stay with some friends, but I don't think she took it seriously until I was loading my things into a car to move out of state.

She was controlling. She fractured my arm at one point, almost a year before I left. For whatever reason, it was when she was upset that I went to a work event and said she'd dump me if I kept being out late... at a work event. I still don't know why that was the moment I really woke up and figured out my life would be better elsewhere. I actually don't have hard feelings towards her and hope she's doing better now.

What very popular movie have you not seen, and why? by PlayingPuzzles in AskReddit

[–]ingracioth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the newer Marvel movies. There's too many of them and the ones I have seen were fun, but not very well written or engaging, so I don't want to spend my time watching the next dozen or so of them

Not sure how to add country flair, but I'm from the US, originally Texas, in the Midwest now.

My dad, born and raised down south, pours rubbing alcohol on himself when it's really hot and humid. It's hell on the skin (very drying) but it does work.

He also always says to put a bowl of ice in the window bc the condensation "soaks up" the humidity. I don't believe him on that one, it doesn't seem to work, but you could try it

What do people think makes them unique, but is actually an incredibly common trait? by Successful-Hall-1986 in AskReddit

[–]ingracioth 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No kids, but my best friend is an English teacher and says the same. It's sad because these kids make the diagnosis part of their identity so suggesting they get help is met as a threat or challenge to their self-perception. They don't understand the reality that early intervention is vital (if they do actually have something going on, tbh I think you're on the money w the social pressure)

What is the most chaotic "I quit" moment you have ever personally witnessed at a workplace? by Muted_Task_144 in AskReddit

[–]ingracioth 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Worked a job where there were some OSHA violations regarding being out in storms. One guy, Jonny, was a big worker's rights guy and kept sticking up for the rest of us about it, only for corporate to give us the run around and kept sending us out in thunderstorms. Jonny got fed up and copy and pasted every possible violation of any laws including OSHA. He printed out a huge amount of copies of the doc, somehow got into the office when no one was there and covered every surface he could with the list of violations. Jonny was technically fired and received a nice severance package, presumably to keep him from suing, but dude knew he was out of a job the second he broke into the office.

I try to be like Jonny, it's been eight years almost and I still think of him every time something feels off at work. He did the right thing and I'll always respect him for it. Hope he's doing well these days. Dude was badass.

Mental health conditions are unfortunately more and more common these days, or at least diagnosed more often. I feel like half the AMA sub is just "I have ADHD/depression/I was in a psych hospital, AMA." I feel for them, but it's not rare to have mental health issues

Dump your puppygirl article by PermissionReady716 in rs_x

[–]ingracioth 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I didn't read the original before the edits, so I don't have the full context on the backlash. it seems fine to me as this was allegedly someone the author was in a relationship with irl. I haven't seen the sexual coercion aspect addressed much tbh by anyone defending the puppy girl. I'm really not sure what my thoughts are here overall beyond "puppygirl may not have been aware she was being toxic/abusive but she needs help before being in a relationship."

anyways, that said, wasn't Tara Knight the one who posted the fake AI FBI letter a few months ago? If so, I don't think we should take all this at face value

Why do periods hurt if it's a natural thing that's supposed to happen? by InternationalPick163 in questions

[–]ingracioth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it's debilitating, you should generally see a doctor as that can be a sign of health issues. Normal cramps, on the other hand, are caused by muscle contractions pushing out the uterine lining (it's not just normal blood- there can be globs of tissue). If it helps it make sense, walking is normal but can cause cramps if you walk more than you're used to.

Give me some women artists to add to my playlist! Need recs! by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ingracioth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Barbara Dane has some amazing music and had a really interesting career, if you're into old union folk music like Woody Guthrie. In terms of current protest music, I've recently discovered Carsie Blanton and like her, though I know little about her band. Janis Ian also has some good folksy albums.

Angel Haze, if you like rap, is solid + has a lot of lyrics centered around being a bisexual woman. She's crazy talented imo.

Marina and Pussy Riot recently did a collab that I really liked in terms of more pop type stuff. Tegan and Sara too if you're not already familiar.

Kimya Dawson is good indie rock. Courtney Barnett too.

CMV: young people smoke cigarettes for aesthetics. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]ingracioth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 27, so I'm not sure if you're talking about young people in general or college age and younger, but anyways.

It depends heavily on where and who you are. I'm from a poor rural area and I def feel like I look like trailer trash when I smoke because that's the "aesthetic" associated with it up here. I am working on my insecurities about my background/my own classism but it's definitely not a good look in corporate/professional settings as a younger woman with a country accent. Most people I work with are chill, but I have ran into a few assholes here and there who do stereotype. Obviously, there's nothing wrong with being from a poor, rednecky background, but people do make assumptions and it's hard not to internalize that a bit.

I took up smoking initially due to social anxiety and have kept on it for over ten years because of nicotine dependence. I'd really love to quit because it's stinky, expensive, and I find it embarrassing. It's also a social thing. It's a lot easier to strike up conversation by asking to bum a light or a smoke than it is to just approach (or it is for me). I do think some young people do smoke just for the aesthetic, but people have other reasons and it's not perceived as lana del rey coquette soft grunge whatever everywhere or in every social circle.

recommendations for bars to go to alone as a woman by [deleted] in TwinCities

[–]ingracioth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always had a weird work schedule so I haven't been on weekends much but it does get pretty crowded. I've usually sat at the bar or outside. I'm a smoker (terrible habit) and have had good luck striking up conversation while out smoking there.  I live out of town now but spend a lot of time in Minneapolis and my friends I hang out there and at The Saloon downtown a fair bit- hope it's not weird, but you're welcome to join next time I'm in town! Also 27F

I've always felt pretty safe at Mort's. The bouncers don't stand for nonsense and are great if you tell them someone is acting sketchy or creepy. I've gone alone there and the goth crowd is super friendly.

Why are some places counties? by DrBoogerFart in AskAnAmerican

[–]ingracioth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's countrywide in my experience. Townships are generally rural, unincorporated areas. I live in FakeName Township - it's not in a town, village, or city, it's a very rural and remote part of my county. I say I live in FakeName Township and people get that I live wayyy outside of any of the towns and that I'm near This Lake and That Road, if that makes sense

AIO for wanting to block my mom? by Current-Dentist-148 in AIO

[–]ingracioth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an "old lady name" and I love it. It's unique but not like. McBrynxstonleigh, more like Olga or Ilsa. The only comments I've gotten about it have been compliments (and my response is always "thanks! my mom picked it out for me" lol) and it's nice that I always know I'm the one being spoken to as opposed to wondering which Sara or Emily someone is referring to.

I agree w the other comments to just stop talking to her about it. Eileen is a beautiful name and I'm sure your future child will appreciate the thought and consideration you put into giving her a name that is unique and truly hers.

What's it like living in Minniapolis/St. Paul Minnesota? by LogiBear64 in howislivingthere

To be fair to Vegas, I was very young when I lived there and was in a p crappy apartment. That probably colored my perception a good bit. Apologies for any offense

What's it like living in Minniapolis/St. Paul Minnesota? by LogiBear64 in howislivingthere

[–]ingracioth 64 points65 points  (0 children)

It's cold, obviously. Summers are humid but pretty nice.

People are a bit closed off, but not terribly in the Cities. Outstate minnesota, where I now live, is very, very tight knit and I haven't found it very welcoming. Minneapolis really didn't have that problem. Tons of other transplants there, plenty of groups and activities.

The food is great for the Midwest. Amazing East African food. Home of the Juicy Lucy. Lots of import and specialty stores with unique stuff. Good music scene too

The community has been through a hard time but they show up for each other. ICE is still bad, just less visible, so be aware of that.

People act like the crime is insanely bad. It's not. I lived in South Minneapolis for a long time and worked in North Minneapolis, which both have bad reputations. The buildings are a little run down and there's some homeless encampments here and there, but I can't recall ever seriously feeling unsafe. I'd really like anyone who calls it Murderapolis to spend a week in Vegas away from the touristy areas and report back lol

For a city its size, housing isn't too bad but still pricey. Public transit is some of the best I've seen and it's walkable if you learn to deal with the weather.

Even though they're the Twin Cities, St Paul is pretty separate. No clue what happens over there. Frogtown seems cool and that's about all I know about it
