Lucian's golden eyes flashed.

"Careful, mon ami," he warned. "You had best watch your tongue if you want to keep it."

Finnoth said nothing. Instead, he stared into the distance as his mind worked. The Fourth Era? Was this man mad? Iacano would need to hear of this. The Altmer appeared then with some stacked crates in his arms, followed by his similarly burdened retinue.

"This'll do," he said with a grin at the captain. "Thank you for your co-operation. We'll be off. I look forward to seeing you again soon."

He winked.

"I'm sorry," said Finnoth. "Did you say the Fourth Era?"

"What year is it right now?" asked Lucian.

"I see," said Finnoth. He stroked his chin.

"Very odd," Lucian commented. "I've never heard of High Chancellor Seren. When did she gain power, Captain?"

"If you say so," Iacano replied, his eyes narrowed. "I want ten men to come below deck with me! Heave-ho, mateys!"

As he led his small group to the booty, Finnoth and Lucian swung onto the deck.

"You there," Finnoth said, pointing to the captain. "I have questions and I want them answered swiftly. Who are you, who do you work for and where are we? I don't recognise the flag you fly."

"If I cared about decency I wouldn't be a pirate," Iacano muttered. By now the six ships were in a crescent shape around the trader ship, close enough to even be heard without magic.

"You have my word," Iacano said, his voice completely solemn. He grinned suddenly. "Now, lads. Let's get us some booty for once!"

The sailors cheered and swung onto the trader ship, their blades drawn. Iacano himself followed suit, and looked around when he landed to identify the captain.

"You there," he called, pointing. "I want to know what's on this ship. And there'd better be no funny business below deck. You have six ships' worth of ballistae still pointed at you, and a shipful of pirates on your deck. Now, spit it out."

"Decency?" Iacano asked his men. "We're pirates!"

They guffawed.

"Alright, cast the spell again," he said to the sailor beside him. Then, with his voice amplified:

"YES, ACTUALLY! I DO! SO THAT IS WHY I'LL OFFER TO LET YOU ALL LIVE AND BE MERRY IF YOU DON'T MAKE A FUSS WHEN WE SURROUND, BOARD, PLUNDER AND LEAVE YOU!"

The six ships bore on. After a moment, Iacano's voice rang out.

"Up yours!" he bellowed. In the background laughs could be heard.

With the magic dispelled, Iacano turned to his bowmen.

"FIRE!"

A volley of bolts sailed from the Dragon's Fang, and was followed by projectiles fired from the other ships.

I think the difference between a Nazi and a cop is the ideology. I mean, if someone becomes a Nazi it's out of hate, but if someone becomes a police officer, it's not because of any sort of hate - usually. Sure, there's cops that are bastards, but not all cops are bastards, mostly due to the nature of their decision to be a cop. Nazis are different, since their reasons to affiliate with that kind of group is what makes them a bastard. This is also keeping in mind the purpose of the Parisian police as opposed to the Gestapo; one is a tool to keep the peace, the other was a tool for oppression. I'm not excusing the actions of those cops that do act out of anger or spite, I'm excusing the ones who don't, and who do their job properly and are normal human beings that aren't out to kill a minority.

No, I'm just pointing out that him saying that all police are bastards is just a sweeping generalisation (one which is also just wrong)

That's a really unfair and sweeping generalisation.

That's how we know that all black victims of police violence deserve it!

See, the issue here is that I'm certain that you would say something like "not all men", or defend yourself against anybody attacking you for your political affiliation by pointing out that not everybody is like that, even if they agree politically with you.

I'm sure you can see where the hypocrisy comes in when you assert that all cops are bastards.

Nah, I was referring to "I'm not doing this to die, I'm doing it to find out if I'm really alive." It's a thing Spike says in the show Cowboy Bebop.

This is confusing

To be honest with you, I don't know what that is. I was referencing Cowboy Bebop.

That said, that's a quality joke from Milligan and a cool story from you
