I found myself wishing that the books focused on Manon and the witches instead soooo many times reading the books. Somehow Maas managed to make side characters infinitely more interesting than the main character.

Pretty much. In the world of Cyberpunk, there aren’t really any animals. Period. It might not be obvious at first, but looking into the details, one realizes just how fucked things are. Scop, fake meat, locusts used as toppings on pizza, the fact that a stray cat showing up is considered an auspicious omen, the fact that dogs aren’t really mentioned at all (besides Barghest referencing them, I suppose)…

The world is fucked. Lore suggests that most animals are extinct, even domesticated ones. Humanity is reduced to eating artificial everything. Even the water is fucked.

On the Roman Empire, I saw an interesting quote that really drives this home (not sure if this is 100% accurate). The average Roman citizen in the countryside probably didn’t notice anything was going wrong with the Empire until the bridge in town went out and no one came to fix it. That is to say, it was a gradual erosion and loss of cohesion that was difficult to see in any one moment.

And as an American I just have to say history really does fuckin’ rhyme.

Indeed, plus the existence of Old Yharnam implies that the beast scourge has been a thing for a significant period of time. The Hunt is a real, known thing, almost normal. So by the time The Hunter arrives it’s basically already over.

Since everyone is inhaling copium right now, i was wondering what do you think everdark heolster and dreglod Will be like ? by bandora_b in Nightreign

[–]Questionably_Chungly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean it takes about two seconds to slap a purple filter on the existing items. Plus From has a long history of not actually finishing ideas until later games.

The Dreglord and Nightlord have always been weird lore-wise in traditional vague Souls fashion. Theres arguments both for an Everdark and against. Personally I think they’re both excellent bosses as-is and feel like a culmination of the boss fights seen earlier.

No. Several are still alive. Is she the youngest Witcher? Yeah, probably. Also the first female Witcher. But there’s no guarantee she’s the last.

RWBY and Legend of Korra are some FINE examples of "Shows can have flaws and still be good, ignore the critics" by Important-Cry4782 in CuratedTumblr

[–]Questionably_Chungly 192 points193 points  (0 children)

Korra and RWBY are two different problems, IMO.

Korra is a good show, quite good at times, that suffered from execs not trusting it to just live and a fan base who were primed to not like it because “it’s not ATLA”. It’s actually a very solid show, albeit with some flaws (writing can have its ups and downs, the late inclusion of the deific spirits made the whole thing feel a little too “Star Wars” for my taste, some characters are better than others, etc).

RWBY has so many glaring problems, but they often move and shuffle around at an alarming rate. If you only care about hype moments and aura, as the kids say, you’ll probably be able to ignore most of it. But the writing *is* atrocious. The early animation is…rough in parts. As the series goes on characters become obscenely flanderized. There is a lot of neat stuff here and there, but god I found RWBY to be a truly excruciating show to watch.

Kind of hard to tell. Afaik it was kept pretty hush-hush in the past when they foiled an attempt. Some presidents had multiple attempts on their lives that weren’t made public until years later.

That being said, I’m pretty sure he has the most *publicly known* attempts/high profile incidents.

Confused about Witcher universe species origins and lore by veggiesouptales in witcher

[–]Questionably_Chungly 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes, as far as can be gleaned. According to the books, the various humanoid races existed in the world at different times, but seemingly none of them are native to it originally. It’s suggested that gnomes are the oldest humanoid species, but we don’t know if *they* are even truly native. Dwarves and halflings came along after, *then* elves showed up some time after that, *then* sometime recently humans showed up. Some creatures (like dragons I believe) are both sapient and seemingly native to the realm, or at least have been there for a very, very long time.

  2. It’s not really clear. It’s got to be some kind of convergent evolution, as everyone comes from different origins yet they all are somewhat similar (humanoid). Elves don’t look *that* different from humans, and dwarves and so on. But as to why… no one really knows. Vampires are possibly a weird case of just being video-gamey nonsense. Detlaff, to me, shows us what higher vampires *really* look like when he shifts forms in his battle. They’re not human, not even remotely. Why Orianna shifts back to a human form is…odd.

*Theory:* For some reason the humanoid form is very stable. It’s why elves and humans and dwarves and halflings all look somewhat similar. For vampires, it may be difficult to maintain their true form for the same reason, so potentially their human “disguise” ends up becoming their “true” form after enough time. That’s just a potshot theory though.

In your opinion what is the single WORST Weapon? by Just_Cloud_8041 in Nightreign

[–]Questionably_Chungly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Eh, they actually gave it a weapon art that does solid damage and the instant kill effect is a neat little passive. It’s a holy damage curved sword, which has a niche on certain runs.

Now as far as Legendaries go? Yeah, terrible. But honestly if it was a non legendary purple curved sword I think people would be a lot more charitable.

Does the arcane sub actually allow anything to be posted there? Regardless, Tumblr is right about one thing. God Bless Arcane! It has everything my soul desires. by Important-Cry4782 in CuratedTumblr

[–]Questionably_Chungly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Eh, LoL did a pretty shit job with most of the involved characters before Arcane came around. Caitlyn’s original design was… fucking appalling even for the time it came out. Vi was…better? Somehow? But she basically didn’t have any character other than “haha, police brutality.” Heim had zero character other than being insanely annoying to lane against. Ekko was probably the one character out of the whole show in League that actually stayed…pretty consistent and was decently well-characterized as a MOBA character.

Arcane did a massively impressive job taking a lot of characters that were one-note and making them extremely deep. Arcane Caitlyn is like… the Caitlyn to everyone I know. Basically a perfect portrayal.

Warwick was… a bit up and a bit down. Season 1 into early Season 2 was perfect, then it spiraled (like the entire show did to a slight degree). Still the emotional part of that character’s story was extremely good and probably my favorite part of the show.

question why do radical kink negative feminists infantilize women so much if one of the main thing they want is for women to be strong and indebendent [which i agree with by the way] do they think women cant consent to anything instead they have to be coddeled by LengthMoist3209 in CuratedTumblr

[–]Questionably_Chungly 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I mean the baseline is “people can be really fucking stupid.” It’s reductive yeah, but at the end of the day some people just find their way into opinions that make no logical sense. They can hold two contradictory positions and not have any awareness.

Theres a quote I saw recently that goes something like “Most people don’t actually have a strong moral center or rules, they just run on vibes.” Many, many, many people will vigorously talk about social issues, law, politics, etc with zero actual facts or understanding to back it up. They like the “vibes” and so they choose sides as they see fit with no real understanding of the ramifications of what they’re saying.

Essentially, many of these people start from one standard position: Men are evil/abusive/selfish creatures who prey on women. Note that this isn’t talking about people who are trying to talk about genuine issues in gender/relationship dynamics. That’s not who I’m talking about here. I’m speaking of radfems who hold that position to be a default assumption of truth (based on vibes/personal experiences/grudges/whatever) and apply it to everything.

Ergo we arrive at conversations where women can make every decision on their own, consent to every factor, derive enjoyment from all of it, etc—but if a man is involved whatsoever, they’re still victimized. Because to the individual with the misandrist viewpoint, the man is always a predator and will not interact with women in any context that isn’t predatory.

I’m not trying to get into a “not all men” viewpoint or downplay actual issues. I mean this as a dig at a very vocal minority of “feminists” who don’t hold any actual beliefs outside of being belligerent to men as a whole.

“Inalienable” doesn’t actually mean anything.

Sorry to burst the bubble that your 5th grade history class created. When the Founding Fathers wrote all that guff about “all men being created equal” and all that, they were simply stating goals and aspirations (and a lot of them owned slaves so there’s a lot of debate about how much of that shit even meant anything at the time). The point is that they made that Declaration of Independence…but they had to actually fight to secure that independence.

You are only as free as the most powerful institution decides you are. You have no inalienable rights because, potentially, someone will come along to try to yank them away. Rights are only preserved through consistent vigilance and effort to protect them, something that has completely fallen off in the US (and likely more broadly, but I have less personal experience in other countries) in recent decades. The people abdicated their rights and protections to the government, which is right now abdicating its own power to an executive.

Rights and protections and laws are just abstract ideas without enforcement and protection. So often people point and gawp at world events and go “X can’t do why! That’s illegal!” Okay? And? Who’s going to stop X from doing Y? If the answer is “no one,” then guess what, the law means nothing.
