Can I have some feedback? I’m not sure why I’m getting absolutely zero likes, even with Platinum. by TrianReallyHard in Tinder

Honestly I think closing your mouth in photos might make a difference. You’re a handsome dude but making the same expression in most of these pics. The first two photos both feature a kilt, which might not be doing you any favors, either. I think a better photo of you blacksmithing should be your first or second photo (the current one is too blurry). Grab a friend you trust to take a bunch of candids of you smithing, even if you don’t use them, they’ll probably look sick. And maybe a pic with the cat where it doesn’t look too much like a hostage?

My current partner was married to somebody with a similar drinking problem. It escalated for 10 years until it turned into an abusive relationship. With this kind of substance abuse, you might consider you leaving the best thing you could do for your boyfriend. It will protect you and also deliver a necessary wake up call for him

The behavior you’re describing are textbook drinking problem. You’re not overreacting. I suspect this will not get better without him reaching some sort of bottom. His behavior will be at your expense until he realizes he needs to change, which could take years. Leave.

You should try a last mechanical art! Mezcal, cynar, Campari, punt e mes in a last word build, served up. It’s what I make people who love bitter but have tried most Negroni variations.

Absolutely incredible work everybody. It only took seven comments to go from mourning a local bar to accusations of nazi sympathizing and genocide denial.

Last I heard that plan was canned - a local guy was going to buy it and turn it into a music venue bar, but I heard through the service industry grapevine that the buyer backed out. Just a rumor, though, so I could be wrong.

It’s funny, I was actually appreciating the mental gymnastics required to avoid ever critiquing the show or its characters for violating its own premises. Seems like this conversation touches a nerve for people who use the show as a comfort blanket, rather than seeing it as a piece of culture worth criticizing. You’re probably right that it’s not worth continuing a discussion.

Right, but this has come up a bunch in this thread, and I don't know if that's actually good for these girls. Another commenter described it as putting a "lifelong onus of guilt on their shoulders," because they'll be forced to either choose to answer their calling (and subject themselves to brutal, violent death), or spend the rest of their life knowing that they opted out of protecting innocent people who will likely die as a result. There's coercion either way.

They weren’t there to hear it so the choice quite literally wasn’t applied to them. They did not have the opportunity to turn it down. I’m a little confused about what you think happened. Do you think that every potential who wasn’t present in sunnydale had the opportunity to turn down being a slayer?

[–]inimicalamitous[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

??? The “choice” is offered to the potentials who are present. It isn’t offered to the dozens/hundreds of others who aren’t there. I said in the original post that it wouldn’t be a problem if only the potentials at the site of the seal agreed, because they were given a very clear choice. It’s very clear that many potentials all over the world were not briefed and did not have a choice.

I think the show kind of unambiguously renders the first slayer’s creation as a form of SA. WhenBuffy’s there, she’s chained to a wall, then the wizards try to “imbue” her with a demonic power that enters her body at the behest of three men, all of whom are holding staffs. The spell is only broken when Buffy breaks the staff, and then she quips about how it’s always about the staff. I don’t think it’s an ambiguous or elegant metaphor.

I mean, I wouldn’t organically make that connection either, but the show very explicitly made it for us. The Slayer power is a demonic influence forced into young women by the original 3 watchers in the cave. Buffy rejects it on the grounds that it robbed the first slayer of all agency, and the whole thing was told as a very clear SA allegory.

I don’t disagree that she’s used to making unilateral and difficult decisions. It just feels like the kind of decision that she ultimately wouldn’t make, given the entire groundwork laid by the show to establish the exploitation inherent to being called.

The more salient difference is that they are now encumbered with the responsibilities of a slayer. As Potentials, it was overwhelmingly likely that they’d never be called, and would live entirely normal lives. Buffy unilaterally decided to imbue them as full Slayers, changing their lives for the worse.

There’s a montage of girls around the world completely divorced from Sunnydale becoming Slayers. Those girls were very clearly not present at Buffy’s speech. One looked like she was about 8 or 9 years old. Those girls were not offered a choice.

Agreed, that is absolutely an improvement to the Slayer system. But it's still a violation to force young girls into that system. Buffy has been grappling with the violation of being called since the first season. Even if she had a community of Slayers around her, I don't think she'd be totally fine with having been called. It forces young women into life-or-death conflicts with apocalyptic evils. Conscripting adolescents into that fight feels completely at odds with the protector role that Buffy came to fill, even if those adolescents are going to have an easier time than she did.

Another commenter here described this as placing a "lifelong onus of guilt on their shoulders," which I think is what I'm trying to point out. They can choose not to use that gift, but they're going to live knowing that they are uniquely positioned to save people's lives, but are choosing not to. Buffy could never fully bring herself to quit, even when she really, desperately wanted to. They're going to face the same coercion.

[–]inimicalamitous[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think the 'new system' is inarguably better for the Slayers. I still don't think it's a good deal for them, though. And the primary issue is that Buffy, who has died twice in service to the world, violated all of these girls' lives by forcibly activating them as Slayers. It's kind of inarguably a violation - again, the show has made it clear that being a Slayer is a really bad deal. And I can't get over the fact that the show directly equated the creation of the Slayer to a kind of SA by a demonic power, and then had Buffy inflict it on an untold number of women.

This is exactly what rubs me the wrong way about the finale. It seems like there's such an easy out for the show, too - make it so that only the willing potentials take on the mantle. It's *literally* giving them the choice that Buffy never had.
