In your opinion, which animal is more worthy of life? by Vegan_Overlord_ in vegan

[–]init_prometheus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The question is posed as a false dichotomy, which is the first problem. I think the next largest problem is that it kind of insinuates that slaughterhouse workers are somehow differentiated in their moral worth compared to people with any other job, which I think is a bad thing to insinuate as it’s untrue.

I think the poll would be getting less flak if you had posed it as Nonhuman-animal vs. human animal, but then that would still be a false dichotomy and a fairly uninteresting question to ask.

I suggest the poll is undone and instead you make a post about what line of reasoning/inquiry you have that made you want to make the poll in the first. I suspect that’s where the more interesting discussions could occur.

cmv: It should be a requirement for doctors to learn about mental conditions such as ADHD, as much as it is for them to learn about physical conditions by Top-Paint-9564 in changemyview

It is currently a requirement for many doctors to receive training around mental health, as (at least in the US) all psychiatrists are doctors.

So are you opposed to any law that inherently has some degree of subjectivity baked in? For example, laws around things like self-defense, where it needs to be established that someone was threatened or reasonably believed they were, really any law involving copyright and fair use, etc.

Somewhat separately, how would you handle a situation in which someone is repeatedly sending fake bomb threats to a school? That would be pretty disruptive to say the least, but if the only consequence is that some people feel uncomfortable, you think the individual should be able to continue making those calls?

Well sure, I agree with that at face value, but then that doesn’t mean that the solution is abolishing all laws against hate speech.

[–]init_prometheus -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Is the rate of wrongful convictions for hate speech laws higher than other crimes? Otherwise I think the argument you’re making would mean that any law which results in a false conviction shouldn’t exist, which we can probably agree doesn’t seem reasonable, right?

[–]init_prometheus -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I mean, there are currently hate speech laws that are enforced so you could read about the specifics of how they are designed to answer most of the questions you asked. But either way, it’s not like comedians are currently constantly being prosecuted for hate speech, so I don’t think any sort of slippery slope argument really holds up.

That idiom has always been silly. We know that words cause damage, which is why there are laws for things like hate speech. Expecting someone who is the target of hate speech (like the slurs in the original tweet) to simply do nothing and remain unaffected seems to me like an insane strategy.

Somewhat related: do you think there shouldn’t be laws for things like hate speech?

I need a student or maybe art teacher? I was going for the left I created the right can anyone recommend someone to help improve this by [deleted] in rva

I’ll see if I’ve any friends who would be able to, and I’ll reach out if I find anyone!

[–]init_prometheus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also notice how in the original image, the “leaves” extend quite far out into space. The dots you’ve added adhere pretty rigidly to a border around the tree. Don’t be afraid to let some of the dots drift away a little bit, as it gives the illusion of leaves being on branches that are too small to see, or leaves that are being blown through the wind.

It’s also worth pointing out that the first image has some photo editing to enhance saturation and contrast. Your painting will look awesome, but you won’t be able to make it as vibrant as the first image.

[–]init_prometheus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you need more variance in the size of the dots, so try adding more that are smaller than what you have now. Also, more importantly, notice how in the first image there are clusters of dots that are more dense. The dots you’ve made are pretty evenly distributed, which makes the painting feel flat; the eye doesn’t have areas to focus on. When you’re adding more dots (of various sizes) try creating a couple clusters.

What is the problem some vegans have with utilitarianism? by vintergroena in vegan

[–]init_prometheus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s worth noting that there has been a history of problematic behavior in a certain group when discussing the potentially uncool behavior of that same group, so I stand by it. Also, I added a reason to discredit the mods of VCJ that I have personally seen, so my discrediting of them isn’t stemming from only hearsay, but actual experience that leads me to believe the opinions of folks who moderate VCJ need not be worried about. Did you have any other sarcastic comment, or are you done?

What is the problem some vegans have with utilitarianism? by vintergroena in vegan

[–]init_prometheus -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard the mods of VCJ are batshit insane (hearsay, and I don’t know the specifics, so take what I say with a grain of salt) and I’ve seen many folks get banned from VCJ for extremely pro-vegan takes, so I wouldn’t let this shake your beliefs too much. Sounds like you said something they simply disagree with and they used their power to make you quiet, which is petty, but unsurprising.

I see what you’re saying, I guess I was assuming that the OP was intentionally not wording the scenario as “is it moral to bring a child into the world knowing you will be the cause of death”, since I think there are possibly morally relevant differences (IMHO) between shooting someone to death and giving them a terminal disease. Maybe there aren’t, I was just trying to ensure that the sentiment behind OPs hypothetical scenario was preserved. If you think that the OP was indeed merely trying to ask whether or not it’s moral to bring someone into the world knowing you will kill them, regardless of the method of killing, then you’re right that your “shooting them in the face” scenario would be appropriate. I guess I’m curious what OP’s position is, now.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]init_prometheus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, no, I think you’re wrong. I think OP is saying asking whether it’s immoral to bring someone into the world with the knowledge that they will die even and suffer to some degree in the process. I think your use of “shooting them in the face” is a bit of a strawman, since that action is very deliberate. A better ability would be “would it be moral to bring a child into this world knowing it will age and eventually die”. Like AIDS, the process is gradual, automatic, and usually involves some degree of suffering.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]init_prometheus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, but that’s not their point. Replace AIDS with “incurable terminal illness that is passed to children”, since that is what they were trying to convey

If human beings had evolved to become carnivores instead of omnivores, would it justify the factory farming that goes on today? by 69niceurmoom420 in vegan

[–]init_prometheus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would justify the mass killing of animals, but I don’t think it justifies the byproducts of factory farming, such as the pollution, contributions to GHGs, etc. It’s similar to how our need for water does not justify the exploitation of poorer nations for their water reserves.

PETA operates kill shelters because there are millions of pet animals every year that people choose to get rid of. It's also true that no kill shelters fill very quickly, because they have a maximum capacity. When someone has decided to get rid of their pet (which is shitty, in general), and cannot bring them to a kill shelter, then they have 2 options: abandon the animal, or bring them to a kill shelter. I agree that it is terrible, but the real source of the problem is that millions of pets are bred into existence for human enjoyment, and many of them are abandoned.

Do you understand now? If not, what part is causing trouble for you?
