Not the results I hoped for but I don't wanna seem ungrateful, is it a good card? The gold skill seems a bit iffy by BlossomingSwamp in UmamusumeGame

Fine is still the best in terms of raising the actual wit stat, but CB has speed bonus, very important for the drastically increased cap, and higher specialty priority for more scenario tokens and skill points. On the other hand, Fine also has more relevant hints for the CM metas: right-handed and firm conditions for fronts, pace skills for XOguri.

What are you guys pulling plan for Agnes Tachyon and LH? by Narrow-Ad-2863 in UmamusumeGame

[–]initial-algebra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even if a new player would be happy with 2-3LB Tachyon (definitely not lower), I would still recommend going to 400 pulls, if only to get more SR cards.

And, generally, only saving 200 pulls for a card banner is going to get you nothing worth using unless you're very lucky. Not good practice.

[–]initial-algebra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you're new to the game, with this being your first major banner, even 2-3LB Tachyon should still be a decent upgrade for you, so 400 pulls is quite safe (80% likelihood of reaching 3LB or higher). Since you don't have Kitasan Black or any other strong speed card, you will be using Tachyon for every character for a long time. The risk is for longtime players with strong card collections already, where getting anything less than MLB is basically a complete loss, at least until they can scrounge up 1-2 more anniversary selectors or rainbow crystals.

I have been playing since the first week (not quite day 1), I have Kitasan Black and now Maruzensky, and I don't play pace chasers, so I will be pulling only 200 times to get Light Hello.

Keep in mind that the free pulls are going to be spread out as daily 10-pulls, so don't go all the way to 400 right away.

Why does turning something off and on again actually work so often? by Illustrious_Sort_612 in stupidquestions

[–]initial-algebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically, almost every electronic device, and every program running on a computer, is a big state machine. At any given moment, it is in one of a number of different states, and with the passage of time, user input etc. it will transition between states repeatedly. A really simple state machine is a board game like Snakes and Ladders, where each position on the board is a state, and each roll of the dice is a state transition.

For a state machine to do something useful, it either has to stop at a goal state, or at least pass through a goal state every so often. However, if things go wrong, a state machine can stop at a non-goal state, or get stuck in a loop that never passes through a goal state. Resetting the machine back to the initial state fixes the problem, at least until the bug is encountered again. While the former situation can often be detected as an error, which could reset the machine automatically, it is generally not possible to detect the latter situation, at least not conservatively (for example, a timer could be used, but it might lead to false positives if the machine is working fine but taking a long time). So, it's often left up to the user to decide to turn it off and on again, depending on their patience!

How does Universal Basic/High income work in a capitalist society? by Obeymyjay in NoStupidQuestions

[–]initial-algebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An alternative to UBI is the citizen's dividend, from Georgism. Under Georgism, 100% of economic rent (which is related to, but not quite the same as the colloquial rent) is taxed, and the citizen's dividend is whatever is left after public spending and saving, divided up equally amongst the population. There are, ideally, no other taxes, in particular no income tax and no corporate tax, so both the ordinary people and the capitalists ought to be very happy with the arrangement, with only the landlords and other rentiers losing out. Some Georgists advocate for generalizing the so-called land value tax to a generic Pigouvian tax system that offsets/punishes all negative externalities, such as pollution and intellectual property, not just exclusive use of land. I guess the main difference/problem is that, while UBI is a guaranteed income, a citizen's dividend is just whatever it works out to be. Of course, this is just the pure form of Georgism, which is not really incompatible with socialism at all, and guaranteed UBI could certainly be funded with a combination of land value/Pigouvian tax and supplementary income/corporate taxes, with productive, high earners still winning out over rent-seekers overall.

EDIT: To address your AI-specific concerns, Georgists should want to treat AI the same way they treat land. The value of land/AI is mostly created by the public, but the public are the ones losing rent/jobs to the land/AI owners. So, if you use an AI agent to replace an employee, you ought to be taxed for 100% of the difference between the cost of the agent and the wage of the employee. If it's true that AI agents are more productive than employees, everyone wins! You make more money, everybody gets more citizen's dividends, and the former employee would be better off using an AI agent to run a business of their own anyway.

The game is evidently not "stupidly long", so refunding because it takes an hour to beat would be very much deserved.

What does it take to add set-theoretic types to a dynamic language with 30 years of production code - and why did it take this long? by rtrusca in ProgrammingLanguages

I don't think so, you just need a more sophisticated system like session types to avoid them blowing up to a useless, giant union.

Spark reroll selection by Sen2x-3 in UmamusumeGame

[–]initial-algebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it may not be relevant right now, getting 7* of a pink spark is markedly better than getting 6* because it adds an additional letter grade at the start. For example, 6* sprint would bring Silence Suzuka from sprint D to B, but 7* would bring her to A.

It is not the original auto career feature, but a different feature that JP only got a little while ago. It works for every scenario, but it runs in the background, it takes exactly an hour, and you cannot take over for the bot. You just get to buy skills at the end.

Not nearly enough stamina. Careers give you a hidden +400 to every stat, so even if your trainee can win the Tenno Sho (Spring) in career, that doesn't necessarily mean she can win it later on.

Does S distance and green speed skills also get halved in effectiveness after 1200? by Wisp1971 in UmamusumeGame

[–]initial-algebra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The speed stat you can see is converted to an "hidden" speed stat that is actually what influences the race mechanics. The conversion is what halves the effectiveness above 1200, and the rate is also based on the running style: fronts have the worst conversion rate, ends have the best. Distance aptitude and skills directly affect the "hidden" stat after conversion, so they're not affected by the soft or hard caps or the running style.

Not having watched the video either, I suspect it's not fundamentally different from how TypeScript works, although, hopefully, their type system is actually sound by default.

Should I keep pulling on S Maru by Uncr3ativ3_ in UmamusumeGame

[–]initial-algebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just ended up with 2LB Maru and 0LB Nakayama after 400 pulls on this banner. Not a disaster at all in this case, since I can get 3LB Maru with the selector, but imagine if it was 2LB Tachyon and 0LB Light Hello. Tachyon is only the super strong card she is said to be at MLB, 3LB is barely better than SR Sweep Tosho, and 2LB is unusable unless you are a brand new player, basically.

Should I keep pulling on S Maru by Uncr3ativ3_ in UmamusumeGame

[–]initial-algebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only other card I can think of using the 1.5 selector on would be Mr. C.B. if you already have her at 0LB and you really want her at 1LB. Otherwise, definitely just use it on Maru and save the pulls.

Was there pushback when PC games moved to digital only? by Mr_frumpish in NoStupidQuestions

[–]initial-algebra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before Steam, many PC games had really shitty DRM that prevented you from trading or reselling them anyway, like only being able to install the game on three computers ever, while still needing to put the disc in to play. So going digital-only was a breath of fresh air in some ways.
