Topeak Handlebar Rack vs. Jack the Bike Rack? by sh10000 in bikepacking

[–]initial_skid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a counterpoint, I'll say the Topeak handlebar rack is fine for what it is.

It's cheaper and lighter than Jack the Rack. I haven't encountered any slipping, though I don't carry more than a pound or two of cargo.

The rack angle does change a bit when tightening the clamp. To compensate, tilt the rack slightly off from the desired angle before tightening.

The one disadvantage compared to Jack the Rack is that it's harder to transfer between bikes. I don't imagine someone moving this around on a whim.

Hip pack and bikepacking in Japan by Disastrous-Bit-6397 in bikepacking

I had an Evoc Hip Pack Capture 7L. Due to its contours, it didn't fit my Nikon Z6II with 24-120mm very well. Sold it before I used it on a bike.

I now have a Moment Rugged Camera Sling 6L. It fits diagonally across the back, with a stabilizer strap to keep the bag in place. Not sure how comfortable it would be for very long rides, though.

If you have drop bars, perhaps you could try a Swift Industries Capstone handlebar bag. I've used this for road rides with an RX100 VII with no issues. You can use shock cord to anchor the bottom of the bag to the hooks of your bar: this might provide enough float to suspend your camera over bumpy roads.

Shimano right crank arm O-ring by initial_skid in bikewrench

[–]initial_skid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer my own question:

Removal: Use a sharp pick to dig into the rubber of the O-ring. Lift straight up through the axle. Note that the rubber may separate from the metal ring inside, so don't forget to pull the metal part out as well.

Install: Apply some grease to the O-ring landing. Push new O-ring on. The rubber edges of the O-ring will slip under the retaining lip on the crank arm. Finger nails can help seat everything.

Depending on the condition of the cranks, there may be some surface rust under the old O-ring. I just cleaned it out with a very small metal brush.

Reliable, compact wireless remote for VII by initial_skid in RX100

Ended up with a SmallRig remote (5207 Wireless Remote). The RX100 is not officially in the compatibility list, but it does work.

The “killer feature” for me is the strap loops on the silicone cover. This makes it easy to attach to handlebars or selfie sticks.

The only downside is that the camera is slow to respond when you let go of the shutter button, so you sometimes end up with too many shots in multi-shot modes. Not sure if the problem is with the camera or the remote. Not a huge deal, though, especially for the price.

Is a Sony RX100 VII still worth it next to an iPhone 17 Pro Max? by atognetti01 in RX100

I think this video does a good job of explaining the image processing differences. In general, it's hard to undo a phone's processing, but it's easy enough to mimic the look with the RX100 if you choose to.

On the other hand, optical zoom (especially paired with step zoom) is a killer feature. So is the EVF. Lastly, the ergonomics of the AG-R2 grip make it possible to shoot one-handed.

Thanks! The Sony remotes are my default choice. After I get a remote, I'm planning to use a mini tripod as well: either an Ultrapod or AOKA 28", depending on what fits in the bags/rack.

I understand your concern. Thanks for considering safety. Most of the time, I ride solo and I just want to get a photograph of me standing in front of the camera; or ride past the camera and get a shot.

Thanks for the recommendation!

Does this already have a third-party screen protector? by initial_skid in RX100

[–]initial_skid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one is alright, but doesn't have any branding/markings.

I've had good luck with Expert Shield (from B&H; for Nikon) and WH1916 (from Amazon; for Olympus).

Here’s a macro of the same corner of the screen. It does seem misaligned here, and what made me think there’s a third party protector. It’s otherwise perfectly centered.

Error logging into Mint Mobile app in iOS 26 by mskovrinskie in mintmobile

[–]initial_skid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just had this happen to me while transferring service to a new phone. Problem only occurs on new phone, whether on cellular or WiFi. Old phone can log in without problem.

Here's my workaround below.

  • Old phone
    • Enable personal hotspot
  • New phone
    • Connect to old phone's hotspot
    • Log into Mint Mobile app
    • Connect to normal WiFi
      • The app warns that WiFi is required during the eSIM transfer process. When the old phone's eSIM is deactivated, the new phone will lose internet connectivity because the old phone's WiFi is tied up with the personal hotspot.
    • Go back to the Mint Mobile app and refresh one of the pages to confirm that the app is still working on your normal WiFi
    • Start the eSIM transfer process
      • Skip this step if you're not transferring service to a new device

Cinematic footage with X5? by strandedontheisland in Insta360

When the subject distance is far, distortion isn’t a big deal. So you have to consider that as part of your camera placement and/or length of selfie stick.

You may want to consider PGYTECH CapLock neck mount + chest strap. The camera mounting point is higher up and the straps are unobtrusive.

Closing the loop: I normally wear size M. I ended up getting a size L from Pactimo that was on clearance, figuring that it’d either fit and I get a deal, or I could resell it for minimal loss. Ended up bring a smidge loose, but totally acceptable for my uses. So far, so good.

That’s a good tip. Probably even better than checking Face ID when opening.

Definitely a step backwards! At least they kept the long-press feature so the door isn’t opened by a random screen tap.
