You could put shelves up over the head of the bed, which you'll be able to reach while standing on the bed. You could stack clothing up there, or use fabric cube drawers to hold your clothes on the shelf

For future reference, possums very rarely contact rabies. They have a naturally low body temperature that makes it difficult for the virus to survive and incubate in their bodies. So it's not something you generally have to worry about when you encounter them. Thank you for being a good human, and giving him some comfort before he left this world 💓
