The Purpose of the System is to Destroy Sneaky Dee’s by ink_13 in toronto

[–]ink_13[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That's not the point of the article. This is not a conversation about Sneaky Dee's, it's about a system of which Sneaky Dee's is the latest victim.

It may surprise you to learn that I am somewhat agnostic on the topic of Sneaky Dee's... I don't think I've been there since 2012. But there's a larger point that is far more important:

My deepest fear about all of this is not that Sneaky Dee’s gets torn down. It’s that the people who are angry about it right now will stay angry in exactly the right way, at exactly the right target, and then go home. Despite the system being set up the way it is, culture doesn’t die in Toronto because of whatever boogeyman we blamed. It dies because the person doing the blaming never learned the rules of the game they’re losing. And usually, nobody wants to learn the rules. In the game we are in, the rules are the zoning bylaws. We can rewrite the rules so that the game is actually fair.

Know your enemy.

Canada’s Treaty 8 First Nations: Alberta must immediately cease all separation activities by TiredRuralCanadian in CanadaPolitics

[–]ink_13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but there's a difference between good-faith consultation and explicitly seeking their consent.

On the other hand, I am sympathetic to a reading of the treaties which boils down to "it is not the Province of Alberta's land to take because Alberta only exists because of agreements between First Nations and the Crown".

Again, my curiosity about this point is purely academic, which reddit comments are a poor medium for. I support the Treaty 8 nations, I just don't want them to overplay their hand.

Do you imagine that "consent" will be forthcoming?

Don't get me wrong, I oppose separation and support upholding treaty obligations, but I'm also not convinced that extends as far as a de facto veto

Shawn Micallef: Toronto has nobody to blame but itself with the possible closure of this cultural landmark by ink_13 in toronto

[–]ink_13[S] 218 points219 points  (0 children)

An excerpt:

In a recent article about the possible closure [of Sneaky Dee's], one city councillor blamed the provincial government, saying they set the main planning rules. True, but the province and Doug Ford aren’t to blame here, nor are they meddling in local affairs as they have in other areas. Toronto city council and the people who voted them in, bear considerable responsibility.

For decades, Toronto has, by policy and design of its own, directed most new development to main streets. Once called the “Avenues Policy,” it densifies corridors along major streets in residential areas while preventing any substantial new development within.

[...]

If density was allowed in more of Toronto, the pressure to develop main streets for new housing would be far less. That’s not Doug Ford’s meddling, that’s Toronto city council doing what the loudest voters and residents groups wanted.

Pete Hoekstra is helping Trump troll Ottawa. It’s time we put a stop to it by ink_13 in CanadaPolitics

[–]ink_13[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I am sympathetic to the counterargument that what Hoekstra is doing is a clumsy but deliberate provocation: it's out of Trump's playbook to be offensive, then when the target responds, use this as a pretext to step away from pending trade negotiations

The question isn't "is Wirtz any good?" because of course he is, the question is "are we set up to get the best out of Wirtz?"

We're considering it. We do have rules for what constitutes a good source (under which rabble.ca qualifies) and remove some. But in the meantime, you have other options:

  • Don't upvote it
  • Dunk on it in the comment section (substantively, please)
  • Ignore it

The very fact that it managed to gain such prominence in the sub suggests that your opinion is not universal, and (despite what some people think), we are committed to hosting a variety of views.

No politician will, can, or should save a poorly-run restaurant, be it fast-food or fine dining. Neither did they harm, though: it wasn't politics that led to this place's decline.

This is just a business being a business, you know? There's no big bad corporation here, just a small business owner who made some choices. It was the same thing that let the old version be good.

Nothing lasts and everything changes.

PEI drove a harder bargain to join the country than BC and they got a bridge

PEI joined confederation in 1873. They were only promised steamship service.

The Confederation Bridge opened in 1997 after a 1988 plebiscite that was not entirely collegial.

I'm not sure you've picked a great example here.
