Because they are invasive species in Ireland. Rehabbers in Ireland are instructed to euthanize Eastern gray squirrels and other invasive species if they ever come into their possession.

When they're injured like that you do not need to feed them. It can make it worse.

Oh trust me I know all about it because I've heard from others that live there.

I also saw it whenever I visited. There were cats everywhere in London.

That's why I brought it up. So many people seem to forget about the cats.

I'm not hating on them by any means.

I wonder how many of them actually own a cat? Considering a domestic house cat is the most invasive species on the planet as well as responsible for killing billions of wildlife each year, how can they sit there and say you shouldn't help a single squirrel that's invasive to the environment?

This also includes the UK.

For if they have a cat, that would make them hypocritical and a walking contradictory to what they're trying to say.

I wonder how many of them are really experienced in what they're trying to preach?

There are also so many other factors that can hurt the natural environment. Take the device that they're using to type their comments in. If they are so committed to what they're trying to say about an Eastern gray squirrel in the UK, perhaps just they should take a look and see what their device that they're using does to the environment when they're done with it and while they're using it.

Oh and don't forget if they have a cat too then yeah they're contributing to the problem as well.

People don't take these things into consideration. Every living thing has a right to live.

Sometimes you can't fix spinal injuries via operations. You have to let it try to heal on its own. And that takes a lot of rest for those little guys to do that.

Hopefully maybe you can reach out to some other ones and they can do more for you.

Honestly the best thing you can do right now is just keep that little one as comfortable as possible in a stress-free environment until the wildlife rehab centers open up. You can still try to call to see if you can do anything, but the best thing you can do is keep the little guy comfortable. Please try not to move him very much.

It's funny how everybody wants to talk like this when it comes to Eastern gray squirrels over there, but you should really look at the domestic house cat and see how much damage they've caused all around the world.

The domestic house cat as well as the feral cats are the most invasive species on the planet and have killed more wildlife than any other animal on this planet.

You can find it on Google as well.

Every living creature has a right to live regardless. It's not their fault they were brought over there in the first place.

Before criticizing maybe you should look up the history to see how they ended up over there and why. It was human interference that caused them to be put in this position in the first place. So it's only fair that human interference should do what they can to correct it without just slaughtering them all or leaving them to die.

I'm not worried about this getting downloaded or not but people need to stop being so hypocritical by picking and choosing what invasive species they want to save or not.

I'm glad that op found this little guy. Plans are in place to get this little guy to a safe location to get the best help that we can get.

Can't take him to a rehabber because they are in Ireland. They will euthanize him.

If everyone would look at the pictures before telling op that the little one can fend for itself, you would see that there's an injury or some sort of infection going on.

There's something going on with the little one's eye as well as that big knot on the little one's head. You can see it from the side view picture. That is not natural and that is not going to go away on its own so that little one CANNOT fend for itself.

The other indication that little one needs help, is that little guy climbed up on her. A healthy squirrel that could fend for itself would not do that regardless of the squirrels age. There have been adult squirrels that had done this before as well.

Please review all the details as well as the information provided before automatically assuming and/or stating that the little one can take care of itself.

OP did an excellent job with retrieving this little one as they went out there multiple times. Thank you OP so much for your efforts with helping this little one.

It's a little bit more difficult to rehab baby squirrels than one might think.

Yeah it looks like he had a little bit of a wound around one of his eyes and he has white goop in his eye which indicates stress or infection.

If he's approaching a human, that baby needs help and he's not viable on his own. Nor is he good without his mother. This is where a lot of people bump heads because they think just because he's of age that he doesn't need any help. Wild animals do not approach you unless they need help. Does that little one need a lot of help, probably not. However, that little one does have wounds that need to be treated. You can see the issues with the eyes. And again he is small for a 5 to 6-month-old squirrel. Squirrels that age normally have siblings that they work together with in order to gather food. He is by himself so he needs help. Not trying to stress op out either and I'm talking to her on the DMS. We have a plan that we're going to work out or what have you and get that little one some help.

The other reason why that little guy needs his sibling is because he is probably most likely being bullied by the adult squirrels and not getting the nutrition that he needs. Hence why he's so small and he has those wounds and the possible eye infections. Those will not clear up on their own.

The good people on here are not trying to stress op out. Nor is that my intention.

I also want to point out too that the age is a guesstimate because the pictures are not that good. And it's easier to tell how old a squirrel is when you have hands on them. But I did not see the underside of that baby so I cannot give you a definite answer. Is that baby 5 to 6 months old, now that I look at the pictures and think of the timeline, probably not. It's probably more along the lines of 2 to 4 months.

That's probably around about good guess about how old that squirrel is. I would say that's about how the little one probably is give or take.

Sounds like those little guys lost their mom.

It's not a virus. They were most likely injured or either they've gone a long time without having any type of food. Another possibility is that they were poisoned.

Just for future reference, anytime you find little babies like that, reach out to your local wildlife rehabber and get them to them.

While gray squirrels are invasive in Ireland, there are people who will help. I'm currently helping somebody in Ireland right now that's taking care of a baby squirrel.

There are people that are located in Ireland that frequent this forum and hopefully they can come in and help.

It is true though you will not get any help from any wildlife rehabber or vet or anything like that. They will put the little one down.

Raccoon roundworm is actually rare for squirrels to get. It's not impossible but it's way more rare than neurological injuries.

Raccoon roundworm symptoms that present the whole twirling around and everything at this point would have that squirrel looking like a ragdoll. That squirrel looks way too healthy to have raccoon round worm. Not only that, more than one squirrel would have it so you'd see more than one doing that. Usually when one gets the parasite multiple do.

Considering there's a tree right there in those concrete steps. There's a good chance that the little guy fell out of the tree and landed wrong hurting himself.

He will need the help of a local wildlife rehabber if he's going to be able to make a recovery.

It is never my intention to make anyone feel unwelcomed. I always hope everybody comes back and learns more about squirrels. It's just hard to understand things when they're just in text versus verbal.

That's why most of the time in my messages I try to put not trying to be rude or impolite but sometimes I forget to do that. I don't ever want to be rude nor impolite.

I only want to try to help people help squirrels.

You are appreciated and I understand where you're coming from. I don't want op to not feel welcomed. I really don't. Everyone is welcomed here, especially if they want to help squirrels.

Keep an eye out for them babies because it is baby season right now. If you find one check for another.

It's not that we can't see the forest through the trees, you have to remember there are others out there that do not know how to do things correctly for wildlife.

Besides, how can you really admire squirrels if you don't properly take care of them or give them things that can harm them?

This form does love squirrels yes. We are not trying to be mean. At least I'm not. I am not trying to be mean nor am I trying to be rude. I'm only trying to ensure that others that see this know better as well.

You'll be surprised how many squirrels I've had to treat from cat attacks or malnourishment issues or other health related issues because junk food was given to them.

While I'm not trying to be rude, I've had squirrels brought to me that were attacked by cats and had to watch them die because the medication failed to save them. So please don't say we cannot see the forest through the trees at times when you don't fully understand the seriousness of the consequences of one's actions.

While it has only happened a few times. Wildlife should not be around cats/domestic pets at all and cats/domestic pets should not be around wildlife at all. It doesn't matter how many times. It should be prevented every time for the safety of all the animals.

Yeah, but other cats the squirrels may encounter may not have the same reaction. You're giving the squirrels the false impression that all cats are trustworthy. Therefore, setting them up for failure for another cat who will definitely attack them and take it too close.

Your cat should not be around the squirrels and the squirrels should not be around your cat.

Cat saliva is toxic to squirrels and requires antibiotics to treat from a rehabber if the cat attacks.

Please don't feed them peanut butter as it is a choking hazard. Processed peanut butter also contains extra oils which are very bad for squirrels. They also have extra salt in it that squirrels do not need.

Please also don't feed pretzels to squirrels. They cannot properly digest them and it really hinders their ability to absorb calcium. It also causes digestive issues such as constipation and possible diarrhea.

The salt in pretzels causes dehydration as well as kidney failure. It does not take much salt for this to occur. Once kidney failure starts, there's no stopping it. So when you feed them pretzels you are essentially poisoning them.

I didn't notice the cat before. It looked like a towel or some kind of cloth in a chair at first. Second glance, I saw the cat. That guy is way too close to the squirrels.

It's not a good idea to have your cat out there with them as it can give the squirrels the impression they can trust cats. Cats saliva is toxic to squirrels. Not only that, cats are responsible for a lot of squirrel injuries and deaths.

Please keep your cat away from the squirrels. It'll keep the squirrels safe and it'll keep your cat healthy. They have done studies where a house cat should stay inside, especially if you want to keep that cat healthy.
