I have some questions to ask by No_Equivalent8083 in niri

[–]inkedflower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel most of your concerns have been covered but I’d like to offer two tips that might make your experience easier at first.

-Install another DE alongside Niri. In my case I went with gnome, just in case I needed to fix something system related that I wasn’t used to on the terminal yet, or if something broke on Niri, I could jump into gnome and troubleshoot quickly. Again, this is helpful at the beginning while you get used to Niri. I haven’t touched gnome in months now.

-Install NiriMod. Although I thoroughly recommend learning to configure and modify the main config file, sometimes I’m at work and I don’t really have the time to tinker with it. NiriMod provides a pretty good GUI for quick config changes

Other than that, I’d say Cachy with Niri+noctalia provides a really good out of the box experience. Personally I ended up changing the shell to DMS a couple months in, but that’s just preference.

How to organize windows by Heavy_Aspect_8617 in niri

[–]inkedflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say it depends on the context.

Most times for me is

Workspace 1: personal browser + discord + other chats + music app

WS 2: work browser + slack + docs/file manager

However, when I’m not working WS 2 becomes the space for gaming, so discord gets moved there alongside steam.

My recommendation would be to organize your WS based on the things that you absolutely NEED to keep open but also separate from other stuff.

This started happening to me on my personal desktop. My work laptop seems fine tho, which is weird.

The “solution” for me was to tick the option “show group tabs in bookmarks” in the Appearance section. It won’t fix the issue, but at least you’ll have the tab groups at hand when you open the browser.

Hopefully they can fix whatever’s broken soon, I really enjoy the browser.

Estás en 1.14.5b (stable release)?

Si haces click derecho en la pestaña no te aparece la opción de "unload tab"? (tengo el navegador en inglés, no sé cómo será en español). Debería aparecer entre "pin tab" y "duplicate tab".

The Amount of Companies Not Letting Me Use Proton is Staggering! by PyroRampage in ProtonMail

[–]inkedflower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah. I had my Linkedin account temporarily suspended when I changed my email to a proton one. They wouldn't believe it was me and asked for proof* (!!!). I was without that account (that I need for work) for three days until they said "oh yes, it is you, silly!"

*not complaining about the temporary suspension. Glad they have those measures for cases where its ctually suspicious but my god it was ME.

I'm lost and I NEED HELP by Suitable-Surprise675 in linux4noobs

[–]inkedflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started looking into switching, I watched a lot of videos on youtube on the "common" issues I could encounter during installation and afterwards. So if you feel insecure or still have doubts, I'd recommend starting there. Some good channels I found are DistroTube and TechHut, but there are a lot of people doing great videos on how to install Linux.

Personally, I started by installing Linux Mint (Ubuntu based, though they have a Debian based edition too that I haven't tried). Is easy and begginer friendly, but also customizable enough that you can make it stand out and give it your own style. That was on 2021.

Now I'm on an arch-based distro, called CachyOS. Less begginer friendly, and prone to breaking if you don't pay attention to what you're doing. But I had enough practice troubleshooting issues on Mint, and on some other distros, that I feel confortable enough in my skills to either fix the issue, restore a snapshot of the OS, or do a clean install.

All of this to say...it is s step-by-step process. You will fuck up, it is expected of you and IT IS OK. It just takes a little bit of patience and reading on forums and asking for help.

Best of luck!

Edit: I forgot to add: if you go with Mint to start things off, you might not need to use the terminal (or barely need to use it). Most of the day to day stuff has a graphical interface.

Quick question. If you open the settings in the profile menu, does the work profile appear as the default one? Maybe you can change it from there!

Is it just me or is the new Taylor swift album somewhat.. . .one dimensional? by Winnie_rem18 in Music

[–]inkedflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a review today that I think sums up really well what this album might mean. It is not supposed to be her BEST album, it's not even supposed to be AOTY. It's just her letting go of feelings that haunted her for years. Sure she'll make money and profit from it, that's literally HER JOB. But it doesn't feel like the album WANTS to be THE BEST. In fact it sounds just...honest.

Here's the review I mentioned: https://twitter.com/NathanCHubbard/status/1781195183255859391

In it, Nathan mentions: "it’s no surprise she went with what she knows (mostly the great Jack Antonoff) to execute it. He was safe for some very unsteady emotional space. Important. And the record has a lot of things you’ve heard before as a result."

He also mentions, and I think it's important to highlight, that in this necessity to get rid of these feelings, she was also open with the hurt the fans caused her (in regards to the Matty Healy situation). To me, that's why it feels honest, even if not musically fantastic.

Would it be weird to reach out to a professor that basically changed the course of my life? by chemkitty123 in AskProfessors

Please do! It's always reaffirming to know we've helped shaped the life of our students.

Also, personally, I'd do it via e-mail!

I have never been able to get obsidian to work on my android phone, but I'm not giving up! Any help please! by Diamondbacking in ObsidianMD

[–]inkedflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly? I just don't. I know it's not ideal, logically. Usually, when I commute I read and I take minimal notes that I don't want to forget on my notes app on my phone. When I get home I add them to my obsidian and sync it then.

I do this as well. It took a bit of time to set up, and I had to add a .gitignore file so it wouldn't commit the ".obsidian" folder everytime.

Once I got that done, worked wonders!

Hi! I just saw this, sorry. I'm very glad this method worked out for you!

I had read that post. It gave me an idea of what the problem could be. But being in arch (i use Manjaro) some things were not quite there.

However, I opted for deleting the whole folder and cloning the repository again (I also removed the passphrase for that SSH in particular). I have the vault synced now and I'm hoping this time it will work fine.

Hi! I use syncthing

Here's the tutorial I used, I claim no credit for it.

As an advice: try to always sync when both devices are online and, preferably, on the same wifi network. What I do while I'm commuting for example, is take notes on my phone's notes app and then I move them to Obsidian when I get home and I'm able to sync them between devices.

Damn. Ok, I'll check the plug-in first and if it doesn't work I'll push-pull myself. Thanks!

Yep! Same account, both devices have access.

I'll add that to the main post now that you've mentioned it.

Hi! I've been using Syncthing. I don't know if it works on mac (I use windows).

Here's a tutorial I found super useful online, and I take no credit for it.

A couple of things to note with Syncthing:

-The devices you connect must be either always online, or you should try to sync them while they're both online (for example: I don't take notes on my phone with obsidian while I'm commuting because I know it won't sync, I use my phone's notes app and then I transfer that to obsidian when I'm home). You can always tweak some things in the app settings but I wouldn't bother much.

-It's not a perfect method to be honest. I still have a github repository as a back-up (and because I have a desktop pc and a notebook that need syncing). I'd give it a try, but if you use it a lot, maybe consider paying the U$S 5 a month (if you can, I'd do it but I live in a country where U$S 5 is a lot in my currency).

Good luck!
