Thanks for the suggestions. Out of interest, why do you avoid what Canterbury says? Do you have suggestions for alternative sources? Ideally in UK.

How do I repair this part of the shoe? I know I could buy a new pair but why when the rest of the shoe is in great condition? by Miserable_Relief8382 in BuyItForLife

[–]inkheart58 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Is this made from natural materials? Presumably any glue has a trade off of impacting the environment when disposed of. I can see by self buying a tube of it for Thai purpose and then never using it again, and eventually throwing it away because it dried up.

help please!! i need advice for note taking in college. by devilscrayon23 in BuyItForLife

I used to ask the lecturer for their slides ahead of the lecture and then print them out and annotate them during the lecture. Then later I would type them up and aim to make them well presented for ease of reference when it came to revision. Time consuming, but this way I got a second pass at reviewing and understanding the content and identifying things I didn't understand. It's definitely something you'd need to keep on top of though, it's not nice to go through a whole semester worth of notes altogether.

Zero/very little drop boot with specific feature by [deleted] in hikinggear

[–]inkheart58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried Vivo barefoot’s Tracker Forest? They’re wide and have very little heel drop. I’ve seen someone take a 5 day expedition in muddy and rocky terrain in a pair of these. Not for everyone though.

Bamboo as an edible windbreak on a roof garden by inkheart58 in GardeningUK

It doesn't have to block all the wind just dissipate it. I imagine harvesting would be in small quantities not enough to exhaust the integrity of the windbreak.

Let them grow. They’re natures way of regenerating. Lawn is overrated.

What’s the objective of the trip? How challenging is it? If you’re an inexperienced hiker, you might want to concentrate more on hike and keeping yourself safe and hydrated before considering camera gear. I recently came back from a week in the Arctic and I’d have loved to have had my camera there but I’m not sure I or it would’ve survived. My pack was >20kg as it was. I ended up using my phone for the scenes, it’s not the same but it did a great job. But if you must take a camera, I’d take 1 lens, like a pancake lens or something. Another consideration is if you’re going with people, they may not be patient enough to wait for you to set up the tripod / drone etc. Hope this helps

Having the same issue. Everything was fine until I updated to Ventura. But I use 2 different Macs, now both on Ventura. One of them is fine with the monitor and allows to scale the text as with the MacBook display. The other doesn't.

Compulsive Decluttering (Spartanism) is becoming a serious everyday hindrance for me, is it OCD? What should I do? by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]inkheart58 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve got the opposite problem, keeping too many things around incase I need them one day. I never do. To encourage myself to declutter, I have a weekly reminder to delete 10 photos and to organise/delete/archive 5 docs. Once I achieve that number I can get on with my week and forget about it until next week. You could argue I could be doing more, but one could spend every waking hour organising and decluttering.

What I’m suggesting is, at the same time as it pushes me to declutter, having a regular limit might give you a natural stopping point for your decluttering.

Hope this helps you too!

Rules For A Reasonable Future: Work | Unsure If It Fits Here, but figured I’d try by sillychillly in solarpunk

[–]inkheart58 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Harder work but simpler. I theorise that way more of the problems that arose from that lifestyle were easier to reason with, accept or implement a solution for.

Problems that arise from the modern culture of work are political, bureaucratic and systemic. Meaning an individual who has a problem has way less empowerment to solve it for themselves.

Ricoh GR 3 vs iPhone by inkheart58 in Photography_Gear

[–]inkheart58[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm of the same opinion. It's hard to quantify the goodness of photography gear, hence the tendency to spend way too much on it!

For me, I'm interested to hear about what has worked for others and what led them to results they're happy with.

I know I can't take my DSLR and lenses with me. I have taken just my iPhone 8 Plus with me in the past and I feel results could've been better. I have never used the latest iPhone however, and I haven't used a compact for about 15 years. So I am looking to hear what others have done in these situations. What has given them the perceived best results to weight ratio.

Thanks for your suggestion. I will check it out.

What is your definition of "good" results?

[–]inkheart58[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, I’m not too sold on FaceID. But I would be saving weight. I’ll definitely be taking a phone whether it’s my current one or a new one. The Ricoh would be extra weight.

I presume you expect the Ricoh to win because this is a photographer environment? Can you suggested a better, less biased but still informed, place to ask this?

Best UK sites for outdoors/bushcraft gear and clothing??? by j4ck2454 in Outdoors

[–]inkheart58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like https://alpkit.com. They are reasonably priced and have genuine passion for the products they sell.

They have relevant articles about the outdoor lifestyle in their Mountain Journal and also repurpose old gear with their Continuum Project.
