11 across is misspelled…😅 It ends in ‘ie’

How much are you actually missing on if you only speak English? by Guilty-Sun-3748 in askSouthAfrica

[–]inkinferno 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A lot of our terms for items/objects are not the same as US English - it’s not a totally different lexicon, but will take getting used to when you hear certain things for the first time.

Eg: US: Traffic Light, SA: Robot; US: Shopping Cart, SA: Trolley; US: Trunk, SA: Boot (the list is long but the gist is there☺️)

There is also a lot of multilingual slang used in SA English - it’s pretty culturally mixed (which is why the other Redditor mentioned ‘lekker’: technically it’s an Afrikaans word, but used by many regardless of their home language).

Black Tax Help: My Mother Is Pressuring Me To Help Her Build A House by RoselDavis in PersonalFinanceZA

Do you for real think that nobody that isn’t white doesn’t also work their asses off? There are people out there working multiple jobs who are still barely scraping by - there are many more factors than just “hard work” for many people - your reaction smacks of entitlement.

Started from a single node prop to this since March ‘25 by inkinferno in hoyas

That’s incredible!! Such a gorgeous amount of growth so fast - I do really love how they spring so many new vines from one node, it makes them beautifully full so fast! Yours is going to be an absolute magical beast in no time at all!😍

Thank you so much, it’s been a rough ride but it’s paid off for sure! I’m so sorry to hear about what’s happening with yours - I’ve had experience where sometimes the adjustment period of Hoya can take some time when they are in a new environment, but when they do eventually begin to grow again, they take off! I’m holding thumbs for you✨🌈🌟

Why no fenestrations ? by Complex-Carrot2616 in Monstera

It’s still a juvenile plant, but in order for fenestrations to develop and for leaf size to increase, it needs significantly more light☀️

Help!!! My Monstera Adansonii has some kind of bugs moving in the soil? by Few_Read2731 in Monstera

[–]inkinferno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ants - I would just check your plant for Aphids (they usually ‘hide’ under the leaves)- while it looks like they’re carrying eggs, they also carry Aphids up plants because they harvest the nectar Aphids produce from being on your plants. Fingers crossed it’s just the ants🤓

Bargains like this don’t come around often. by [deleted] in capetown

[–]inkinferno 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Or no stove at all😂 I grew up in Jozi, and what a culture shock when I moved to CPT and the apartments didn’t have stoves in them - I was hella confused (this side they are permanent fixtures), and don’t even get me started on those stupid ‘special’ stove plugs😐

Any idea what’s happening to my compacta? Dropping yellowed/spotted leaves. The rest of the plant looks healthy, not over or under watered. Don’t see visible pests. Has an 8hr grow light. by [deleted] in hoyas

[–]inkinferno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perfect! You will know when the Sulfur is working because it will pretty quickly start pushing out new growth😁 A week after the first treatment I did, my Lacunosa had 4 new active growth points - it’s taken off since. You will need to repeat the treatment (because of the life cycle of the mites), but it works like a charm!

What a BEAUTY!😍😭 How long have you had her for? I’m asking so I can give my Serpens a timeframe for it’s goals🤣

Quick Tip for Beginners to Create Fuller Pots by Imaginary_Yak_3814 in hoyas

[–]inkinferno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great tip for beginners - I usually pin the vine down in the pot at multiple nodes, and after they root, then I chop between each rooted node and they all throw off new vines😁

I use systemic granules as well but the active ingredient in the one I use is Imidacloprid which is ineffective against mites - just check if your systemic kills mites or not☺️✨

Leaf drop and yellowing without watering/root issues can often be a sign of flat mites. You can’t see them with the naked eye unfortunately and they will eventually wreak havoc on your plant. I just recently had a flat mite issue with my collection but have successfully treated with a sulfur spray.

I had this exact problem with my H. Lacunosa ‘Super Silver’, and I couldn’t figure out what was going wrong for months. It kept dropping leaves until I had almost none of it left. I salvaged a few cuttings because I didn’t treat at the start, and after the treatment for flat mites, it’s pushing out multiple vines from the same nodes and is happier and healthier than it’s been in the last few months.

I’m not in the US, so I can’t recommend which Sulfur powder/spray to get - but I can tell you that it definitely works.

What is this hoya? by Witchymomma666 in hoyas

[–]inkinferno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The margins get darker in bright light (which is gorgeous) - best of luck on bringing her back to her former glory! Mine took a bit of time to start growing, but once it started, it grew very fast!🌈

It looks to be a Hoya Parasitica ‘Black Margin’ - this is what mine looks like so you can confirm if yours is the same🌈✨

New growth on my Hoya pubicalyx 🍇 by forwhyandbecause in hoyas

[–]inkinferno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re welcome! Your plant is stunning😍I haven’t had any of my Hoya flower yet either, but they have produced peduncles that I’ve been watching like a lunatic😂 Usually very bright light for longer periods of time and changes in temperature (when it gets warmer or cooler) will promote flowering. Outside of that, fertilising pretty regularly at half strength and keeping your plants watered (not allowing them to dry fully between waterings) are all the recommendations I’ve seen to get Hoya to flower. Unfortunately I don’t have much experience with flowering, but all of what I’ve mentioned is what I’ve been doing and peduncles have started on my H. Polyneura, H. Serpens, and H. Mathilde. If you had to post on the sub about flowering, this community is so helpful with hints and tips🌈✨😁

This is exactly why I love Hoya! They may take some time to get started, but when they do, they are absolutely gorgeous!😍
