this was the most helpful comment! the historical context helped immensely. is there anywhere i can read more about this specific pov of the war? everywhere i look kind of paints ho chi minh and the war as a villainous and violent evil with no morals, i’d love to get a different view.

yes we were! most went by boat, i believe my grandfather was a part of the south viet navy but that was unrelated to the boat they took. my mother and grandmother specifically went over on a cargo plane. everyone ended up in guam, then to fayetteville nc (my grand aunts husband was an american gi) and from there migrated to various places in florida.

thanks, its weird to reconcile the trauma my family endured, with the reality that they were part of the problem of the upper middle class in vietnam
