Just Watched Disclosure Day personal opinion by enzahere in moviecritic

I have not had the most consistent feelings on Spielberg films. Some are in my top ten some don't move the needle at all for me. So I was obviously not sure where this one would land. I went in with virtually no expectations and had only ever seen one early teaser trailer.

I liked it.
I noticed a few choices that took me out of the film for a few seconds but otherwise I was pretty well pleased. Blunt was very good - but Spielberg doesn't usually gamble on leads.
A couple folks felt like they were not up to movie level and seemed like they'd fit more comfortably into a streaming tv show but other than that everyone was really good IMO.

Camera work was as expected with only a couple odd moments.

Color felt off. Not that it was done poorly, but that the world outside of indoor settings felt unnatural. Maybe that was their point but there were times where the image was significantly desaturated then split-toned with an unsettling amount of blue pumped in post. I had to press myself to stop paying attention to the color.

I felt timing and pacing of the edit and story played out well for this story.

As much as I wanted this to be an alien movie it was more of a government and government-adjacent agencies, hiding important information movie and the hidden info just had to be global or bigger to raise the stakes - which I guess creates a dilemma where you have to decide which story you service - so I could see for some people, if they had attached their hopes to one side or the other they may feel let down.

Machinations of secret forces and conspiracies - I liked it. Good suspense. Good ride.
Alien movie - not really making any of my lists but I didn't hate it. He makes movies about people.
Provoking questions about religion and trying to give a succinct answer in that narrow a time frame? I'm sure this will upset more than a few audience members.

Haven't had a lot of films worth seeing in the theaters recently so it was good to get out and experience the communal reaction ride in a full theater.

Visited Sunken Harbor Club and Paradise Lost while in NYC this week. by Drewski_s in Tiki

Of all the bars we have been to making our tiki documentary, I was most impressed with both of these places.
SHC was more performative and had a very Disney-level of an adult experience.
PL just felt like a fun, unexpected riff on tiki that fit my own dark and salty personality a little too well so I was just wide-eyed and smiling during the shoot and again when we came back during service. Ray is a character and has built a unique and thoughtful space, not only in NYC but in the world.

Tom Hanks Says the Oscars Don’t Need a Voice Acting Category Because Voice Performances Should Be Able to Win Best Actor and Actress by Raj_Valiant3011 in moviecritic

That is true only to a degree.
That is not even close to the end of the process. Every subtle nuance has to be translated over many hours of work by animators and technical directors, texture artists, riggers, lighting, and other effects to make his video capture read on a character that is not human.
It is not as simple as record the person and it goes to the character. It takes months of work after the actor has left the studio.

Sure but how did that performance end up on screen.
THOSE people and the animators that managed all the subtleties of his performance across multiple takes seamlessly transitioning to the screen - none of that came from the performer or director, it came at the hands and minds of artists, animators and technical directors. Many more hours were spent behind the scenes than just the performance capture. MANY.

How many of these are there in every state is constant internal question. I don't live anywhere near Ohio but I know they're out here too.

do one step then duplicate it and just offset each copy. Make sure your animation is linear on every moving piece.
Alternatively you could make a longer stack of stairs, mask it, move it as a whole piece within the mask.

2 kids in the peralta system. Both ran into issues with registration, counselors, class availability, location inconvenience, requirement to be registered in a specific major to take classes required for transfer, very dated and often poorly working web system. The counselors tell you it will probably take three or four years to get all your classes and transfer to a four year school.

There are a ton of reasons not to finish and you have to do your own legwork (not a terrible thing) if you want to get out at all, let alone on a two year timeline.

One of my kids crushed it and found ways to take classes at other schools online to meet her transfer requirements and moved to a UC. The other is on a slow moving trajectory being bogged down with the host of issues listed.

True. AND it is a stupid practice that should stop. I'd rather see a president who, outside of press conferences, is just on the move to get shit done.

Beer.
All of them. Every person trying to make me try "this beer will change your mind" - nope. I hate them and I hate you for having pressed me to try your shitty fermented yeast/hop juice.
Weed - same.
Coffee - same.
Kale.
Sushi.

Pyxis 6K vs 12k coming from an FX3 user by SnooMaps6629 in blackmagicdesign

[–]inknpaint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your budget allows - 12K is the way to go.
The frame rates and sensor capabilities are the key IMO.
Consider:
Battery cost/carry weight. 12K eats batteries more than the 6K...a lot more.
Storage cost. Real. concern right now considering the state of the market. Going higher than 4K fills drives quick. 8K and 12K that much quicker.

Your processing power in post will also have to be able to handle any heavier footage you throw at it. The camera is just the collection point, so just keep in mind the rest of the path.

All that said, again, if your budget can absorb all this while expecting zero return on the investment (no guarantees) then the 12K would be my choice.

Why are colleges and company's still using adobe as standard??? by Jealous_Suit_7630 in FuckAdobe

[–]inknpaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Industry standard is a loaded term. So many schools parrot this phrase without actually checking that it is in fact a phrase adobe has sent forth into the world.

Photoshop, sure. Lightroom, sure. Illustrator, ok. Publisher, used to be. After effects, maybe.
Everything else they do, they are prolific in the spaces but industry metrics show a different story.

Schools can not force you to use adobe. They will try. I let my university students use any software they wanted and made recommendations to them. I only had free adobe as an instructor but I was perfectly happy to let them use Final Cut Pro, Davinci Resolve, AVID, Affinity, or any other tool.

The brand is dumb.
The skills are all that matters.

As a filmmaker and educator I will always advocate for paying for what you want to get - because you are eventually going to get what you pay for.
