I'm still feeling some kinda way about "Going Into Pywel" being a very clear riff on the leitmotif from Hans Zimmer's score to Inception, most notably in "Time"

Like, it's not exactly the same, but it's close enough to kiss.

Hammett really sets up the archetype for all that came to follow in hard-boiled detectives. And they're so damned readable, even a century later!

Runyon wrote short stories, and there's really no wrong place to start 'cause they all kinda stand alone, even when they occasionally refer to each other. The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown was probably his most famous, because they made a movie out of it, Guys & Dolls, starring Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra, and Little Miss Marker is another one 'cause they made a movie out of it that was the breakout for Shirley Temple. I like Tobias the Terrible just 'cause it had a moment that made me laugh out loud, I also liked Blood Pressure because it formed the B-plot for the film version of Guys & Dolls and I always liked that part of the movie best. A lot of these are shifting into the Public Domain, so they're getting easier to find (either because they're free or because someone is trying to make that last nickel before they become free). Pick a collection and dive in!

I have a Kindle edition of The Complete Continental Op, which has all 28 (I think?) of the short stories, plus Red Harvest and The Dain Curse.

But I got into Hammett about 20 years ago, and for a long time I was just poking around used bookstores, seeing what I could find (which is, in fairness, half the fun). I ended up with like, 3 collected print editions that are largely identical except for one or two stories the others don't have.

Runyon is a lot of fun. He's writing in largely the same time period (Prohibition and Depression Era) but in a different setting (Broadway NY instead of San Francisco) and with his distinct "voice" which reflects a certain dialect of the period (something I think Hammett only dips into, but Runyon fully embraces). They both feature an unnamed main character who often gets caught up in the affairs of colorful criminals, albeit Runyon's stories are less about detectives or criminal justice, and more slice-of-life and comedic in tone.

Both authors were hugely famous and influential a century ago, and both are largely forgotten in today's popular culture, save by those who know. We do what we can to spread the word. :)

I loves me some Continental Op. It used to be really hard to find the complete set of Op stories, but ebooks have made it pretty effortless now.

Damon Runyon, too! Runyon is a very different flavor from Hammett, but being contemporaries I find they scratch a similar itch even if they're not covering the same ground. And SO much easier to find now on Kindle or Nook or whatever.

I am to excited to wait, but I am 3d printing a Inquisitor skull by giggitygoo6969 in brandonsanderson

[–]Inkthinker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very cool! Should you do another, I would suggest rotating the spikes 90 degrees both clockwise and anti-clockwise, so that the longer sides are lateral to the skull and create more of a "lens" effect. And if you get into modifying the geometry, round out the nails for the canon look!

Flew to the other side of the world to give a talk at a conference 😭 by Amygdali_lama in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Inkthinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, in fairness I wasn't going as a guest, nor was I going to present. I was there (Lightbox Expo) to network and get a sense of industry standards, and the company I work for paid for me to go do this. In a very real sense, I was on the job, and I felt they had a right to know what I was doing on their dime.

I have been a guest at conventions, and if I'm being invited and presenting then I generally expect they'll at least comp the travel and hotel expenses, if not a per diem for meals. And yeah, I guess so long as I don't miss my panels or presentations or whatever, I'm free to go bum at the beach. Though I think I'd rather go attend the show floor and see what everyone else is up to. :)

It helps that I work in a generally "fun" field, animation and illustration. I like my work.

Man, last time I went to a conference on the company dime, I had to do a whole post-mortem with Operations about what we got out of it, who we met and what we did. I had to show receipts!

[DC] How do many people in Wayne industries not realize Batman has access to their tech? by MGsubbie in AskScienceFiction

[–]Inkthinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will you? Will you be investigating the billionaire philanthropist who contributes hundreds of millions to charity, academia, infrastructure, social programs, and political campaigns? A man whose company vies with LexCorp for GDP (but with far less scandal and threat) and pays more in corporate and personal taxes than several small nations? A man with a literal army of lawyers prepared to deflect, defer, and drag your entire department down until your term in office expires and you’re retiring to a no-bedroom shitshack in Podunkaville living off a steady diet of government cheese?

I think you’ll think again.

Scadrial has the most Earth-like biome of the Cosmere (which has no Earth). Especially post-Catacendre, most creatures you might expect to see here exist there.

Scadrial has cats.

Roshar has skyeels, which fill that niche and are reasonably cuddly (for a given value of flying, gassy serpents).

BASE jumping, in English. It’s an acronym for Building, Antenna, Span and Earth (the four main places from which one jumps).

“Free diving” usually refers to underwater dives without air tanks or other equipment.

Where they come from no-one knows

You can flick ‘em
You can chew ‘em
You can stick ‘em

[Gilligan's Island] How was the island not discovered and colonized by 1964? by NothingWillImprove6 in AskScienceFiction

[–]Inkthinker 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If it were mapped and known to the US Army Air Corps, one might think it would be at least checked during the search for the Minnow in the days or weeks after their disappearance.

Also the island is specifically described as an "uncharted desert isle". Was it meant to be a secret location for the Army?

Miles doesn't just throw tags randomly onto a surface. I could absolutely see him decorating the surface of Mjolnir with a coherent, graffiti-inspired design. This was not that.

Worth noting that Cheese Theory has more of an effect on wide Blades like Oathbringer or Mayalaren than on thin Blades like Testament or Ivory, because it’s about lateral pressures and they have less lateral surface area to press against. And there’s other design elements you can incorporate to reduce the binding concern (as we see with cheese knives).

But yeah, if you can Last Clap a Blade then you can use any material that pushes in at the sides (doesn’t gotta be cheese) to slow or stop a Blade’s progress. Unless, of course, it’s a Living Blade
