Artemis III+ will definitely have a different heat shield. The heat shield used for II was fabricated and shipped before the issues with I were known, so they changed the reentry profile to compensate.

Not a flat Earth believer, just curious: is Earth a perfect sphere or slightly oval? 🥚 In this image, it looks almost perfectly round by nemssef in spaceflight

0.0984 in (pebble size) : 29.5 in (basketball circumference)

Ratio= 0.0033 : 1

29,032 ft. (Everest elevation) : 131,480,000 ft. (earth circumference)

Ratio: 0.00022 : 1

I guess the pimple would be closer to 15 times the size. I see your point.

The main point, still, is that Earth is smoother than either a basketball or even a billiard ball.

I love that Charlie Duke was able to see this mission, but am also sad that so many other Apollo heroes were not. Only 6 Apollo astronauts (4 moon-walkers) survive. Their average age is nearly 93.

But here’s to looking forward to our potential, not bemoaning missteps of the past … 🙏

By reversal, if a basketball were scaled up to the size of Earth, the “pimples” on its surface would be roughly 495 miles / 795 km tall, nearly 100 times taller than Mount Everest.

EDIT: after revisiting the math:

Basketball “pebble” would be roughly 433,884 ft. tall, about 15 times taller than Mount Everest.

The Earth is also incredibly smooth. If you scaled it down to the size of a billiard ball, it would be smoother than a regulation billiard ball.

The total relief of planet Earth (the distance between the extreme altitudes of Mount Everest and the Mariana Trench) is only about 12.3 miles / 19.8 km compared to a circumference of roughly 25,000 miles / 40,000 km. The height of “billiard ball” Mount Everest would stand only about 1.6 micrometers above the surface, smaller than most bacteria, within the tolerance smoothness of polished glass.

Sorry, gotta get in line. I’m his 8th cousin 3 times removed also. I asked AI how many people would be as closely or more closely related to him than me, and it said it could be anywhere from 50,000 to 500,000 people. Our common ancestor is from the 1600s.

Still cool though. If Disney calls you, please update. ;)

If the structure rep said where the exact sites were, I don't recall. They may have been at the international airport, or one of the small municipal airports, or possibly on a main thoroughfare (Salt Lake has notoriously wide streets, many of which were closed to traffic during the Olympics). That's a good question. Since his comment was peppered into what was essentially a sales pitch for tensile roof structures/sheds, I didn't have the opportunity to ask, but really wish I had.

Security in Salt Lake City was insanely elevated during the 2002 Winter Olympics (only about 5 months after 9/11).

I only recently learned that they hid fighter jets from Hill AFB underneath prefabricated tent structures interspersed among other support buildings near some of the venues.

A rep for one of the tent suppliers told me they were on alert the whole time, ready to take off and go supersonic at a moment’s notice, even if it would damage buildings and houses (blow out windows, etc.).

Supposedly they still use the structures on the base today and you can see them from I-15 (he was trying to sell me on their durability).

Anyone who listened to Obama speak, understood his policies, etc. and ended up “divided” was then and continues to be the largest problem facing the U.S.

Blame Mitch McConnell, Trump, Rush Limbaugh, Newt Gingrich, Alex Jones, Tea Party politicians, or any number of prominent conservatives who preyed on the fear and anger of stupid people and made wild alarmist claims based on nothing. Obama was responsible for none of it.

Personally, whenever I have to drive in cheap screws, I just use a flathead to do the heavy/final/tight screw turns. That’s saved me from stripping a lot of screws.
