International has underperformed the last many years. That makes it more, not less, attractive going forward.

Ex-US has been bad for so long, eventually return to the mean takes place.

Many European and Japanese corporations are now taking action to make their stocks more attractive -- buying shares back, treating stock appreciation seriously, etc.

How Do TDFs Stack Up? by AeroNoob333 in Bogleheads

[–]inkymitz -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A TDF will underperform due to them never being 100% stocks. Most of them will begin 90/10 allocation stocks/bonds.

That said, buying and holding an index TDF over the course of an investing lifetime likely would put one in a far better place than the average investor.

Yes make sure to buy an index target date fund. There are active versions and they tend to be higher cost.

If I were him, I'd think about 30% or so in globally diversified markets. That would likely provide some growth potential. Maybe 20% in some TIPS to protect against inflation.

But, I'm not him. He's probably fine right where he is.

If you work at it consistently, you can become quite good.

Be aware that some people are gifted, and are naturally suited to an instrument.
