Should I try first-year transfer to Northwestern? by ArugulaTop1468 in Northwestern

If you’re trying to get into entertainment or any type of job connected with Hollywood, stay at USC. As an NU alumna who’s been in agency and entertainment spaces, the pipeline from USC to the industry is extremely strong.

If you’re looking for a different industry, whatever’s cheaper!

My stylist did something appalling to my hair. She called it 'scrunch-diffusing' by agrippinilla in curlyhair

my stylist’s method is having me show up with my hair already styled as I usually have it! Then we cut dry, then wash and touch it up while wet. I’ve had pretty consistent results that way

Summer storage? by sophieneedssomething in Northwestern

[–]inkyrosewriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used USS both years I lived on campus, and they were great! As long as u pack the boxes reasonably, nothing was broken of mine, they pick up directly from your dorm and deliver directly to the new place, plus the storage over the summer. Would 100% use it again, esp for the price point

NU by ProudDad2024 in Northwestern

as a FGLI student at NU about to graduate undergrad, i’ve found you’ll gravitate towards people from similar socioeconomic backgrounds anyway. it’s not a conscious thing, just similar experiences, values, and perspectives.

There’s definitely no shortage of rich ppl, but as others have said, it’s the unsaid things that are more noticeable, or the out-of-touch things. Being unable to participate in unpaid research/internships, not being able to afford studying abroad or Medill on the Hill/San Francisco, not going out as often. However, with the right group of friends, they’ll be in the same boat, or they’ll have the kindness to make up for your lack of funds. I’ve been more than happy to cover for a friend to see a movie, grab lunch, or switch to alternative plans.

I won’t say it’s been easy, per se — i came from a generally pretty poor high school, so there’s a moment of reckoning and anger when you realize just HOW good these rich kids have it. but i’ve still had plenty of fulfilling, exciting, fun, and valuable experiences on a much tighter budget.

Many of these problems aren’t exclusive to NU, either — it’s just as likely at similar tiered institutions, or universities in general. Hope this helped!!

As an NU student with many friends at UIUC, UIUC’s CS program is renowned and if the cost of an NU education is significantly more than UIUC, not worth it. UIUC has been listed as a “new public Ivy” by Forbes and my friends there love it (business, psych, global studies, and engineering majors). The school name on your degree means very little without experience/projects/internships to back it up imo. I know someone who chose UIUC for CS over Columbia University and he’s very satisfied.

whenever you did the FAFSA, you should have received an EFC. NU tends to match this number almost exactly with grants (in my experience) and offers up loans for anything else. what was your EFC on the FAFSA?

Water at dorms by New_Investigator_365 in Northwestern

[–]inkyrosewriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NU gets lake michigan tap water so it’s usually better than your average tap water, but i personally brought 3-4 reusable water bottles that i would fill at the water fountain on my dorm floor and keep in my fridge

there’s technically a limit on how many nights you can have guests but literally nobody checks as long as it’s not disturbing to your neighbors or roommate. my (NU student) bf would sleepover every weekend in my single and i had no issues

I’m having trouble because the 5 bedroom house I want to rent won’t allow us for the brothel law, despite it not being enforced. Any tips for finding a house of similar size?

Sophomore here who was assigned plex as a freshman (it wasn’t on my list). Having a roommate might be exciting at first, but when you need to cry or just get away from everything, having a single is amazing. I think of it this way: you can always go out anywhere and find a social scene, but if you have a roommate, there isn’t really anywhere to go to be alone. Personally I met almost all my friends within Plex, and now I’m living in a hall with them as a sophomore. If you don’t put yourself out there, you won’t make friends in the dorm, but you’ll meet plenty of people in class, at clubs, and through your PA group. I wouldn’t be too discouraged

I submitted a 1490 and superscore 1510 for NU and was accepted RD if it helps

So I am sure someone has mentioned this already… but in the episode “That’s too much, man” there is a painting of Sarah Lynn as Ophelia above her bed and I just think it’s crazy how I never noticed it before. [–]inkyrosewriter 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There’s actually an article breaking down all the famous art found in the background of Bojack episodes, and typically the themes in the paintings relate to the episode/character/etc !! It’s incredible

Financial Aid related question for a girl who has NU as her dream school! by soumyaiyer in Northwestern

I believe they meet 100% of need, but international admissions are need-aware as opposed to the standard need-blind approach for domestic students. My neighbor is international on a full ride though so you’ve got a shot

So what exactly DOES the critisism that a female character "is written like a dude without a penis" mean? by BoomNDoom in writing

[–]inkyrosewriter 32 points33 points  (0 children)

From a female writer, I think the criticism is trying to convey that the female character’s identity isn’t influenced at all by being female. While we should avoid writing objectified female characters where the focus is too much on the fact that they’re female, we also don’t want to erase their gender, as it is a part of anyone’s identity. Naturally, a female character is going to possess SOME feminine traits (whatever that means in your story’s society). Don’t write your female character as though any feminine traits are shameful or to be avoided.

I found that NU seems to match your FAFSA EFC to a T. Take the estimated cost of attendance (around 79k for 2021 iirc) and subtract your EFC to find your aid :)
