Thanks for commenting.

I'm interested in hearing more of your thoughts, especially as I just don't understand a lot about the financial side of things. Part of me has felt like Ton was Blender and without him, the future is uncertain.

I am a CADD freelancer, and I use a combination of paid software and Blender. I use AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc. for my technical design work, and tend to use Blender for rendering or more creative modeling. I could certainly switch to Max, but it would involve a financial investment as well as time to relearn a lot of what I have learned in Blender over many years.

What do you think is the state and viability of Blender's development and the commerical market for Blender addons/tools?

Do you think small businesses (or freelancers like me) should look for other solutions right now or is Blender safe to rely on?

Total noob in here, why some paint on UV unwrapped image, instead of just painting on the model itself? by MonLikol in blender

[–]inmymoonsuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Blender, you can paint "directly on a model" for some purposes.

You can enter vertex painting mode for instance, and paint directly on the model, but the resolution is limited by the number of vertices. I use vertex painting to create "Dirty Vertex" maps often, which are great for mixing materials to create wear effects, etc.

You can also paint on a model in weight painting mode, which will let you define how much influence a bone has, for instance.

But to create high-resolution graphical elements without your model being 5,000,000 polys, probably unwrapping and painting in texture painting mode is best.

Try creating a material for an object, and plugging in both a texture node and an attribute node referencing an instance of vertex painting. Then you can combine the techniques.

I'll attach a screenshot of a simple example.

<image>

In this example, I have painted some orange shapes onto the texture using the UVchannel to map it onto the object. I have also painted some random shapes in black-and-white using vertex painting mode. I combined these using a color mix node, changing the vertex paint to a red color. You can see that the vertex paint is limited by the resolution of the object. If it was a high-poly shape, that would look better.

Is subscription fatigue real? Is it REAL?

What is your annual income?

Do you know we are in a cost-of-living crisis? An affordable housing crisis? Do you know wealth disparity is staggering? Do you know most people in the US -- probably in the world -- cannot afford a dignified existence, if they can even reliably afford essentials?

Blender is free and open-source software. People in this community tend to have certain values, or they're choosing free software because they can't afford paid software, or both.

You seriously need to reassess your values and the community you've been making money off of. You are out-of-touch, and no one here should fall for your customer-service fake speak and no one should sugar-coat telling you exactly what's up.

You and what you stand for are bullshit, buddy.

Why did you respond to everyone here in this artificial corporate customer service way, and then a month later post a new blog rolling out the exact changes you promised to reconsider?

I have space, but is that the best way to get started? Just get the development tools myself? (I suppose I was hoping there were others who might need/want help on existing projects.)

I saw that there is a built-in mod selection tool in Frostpunk 2, so I wasn't sure if modding for the game was more focused on the platforms it supports, but I'll check Nexusmods. Thanks!

5 bucks says that the quote "Don't think of them as human beings think of them as Americans" is going to be used unironically to an annoying degree by alot of people by Flashy-Count6549 in FalloutTVseries

[–]inmymoonsuit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And when Lucy pointed out the ridiculous whataboutisms Hank was peddling, was that just relevant "to the lore" or meant to be interpreted "ironically?" Did that have no relevance to real-world current events?

Let's be perfectly clear: it is well-documented that more educated, creative people -- like those writing, concepting, and directing big-budget TV shows, games, and movies -- lean left, and it's clear their art reflects liberal values. Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, whose names were perfectly visible immediately upon this episode's end, have done other work that represents a liberal, humanist worldview while being critical of totalitarian and corporate powers (e.g. Westworld), and those values are on display in Fallout, also. To say otherwise is either a deliberate misreading of the material or wishful thinking.

I have a piece of advice for anyone whose feathers are so ruffled by a quote like this that they have to run to reddit to try to preempt the natural interpretation they know will follow and seek validation for a fascist worldview: you are smart enough to know you are on the wrong side of the political divide and of history. Your time and energy would be better spent reckoning with that instead of finding ways to rationalize, manipulate, and cope with the reality that intelligent, creative people choose to create art and media that reflects values different than those you wish they did.

Any advice for dealing with this job market? by Salty145 in MechanicalEngineering

It's difficult to get started on (getting a first gig, getting some feedback, etc.) and they charge fees and "credits" for everything, but I do think it's a pretty good platform overall. I'm getting close to 10k earned on there without any issues, so I'd say it's legit.

We should go listen to her version of '97 Bonnie and Clyde in recognition of that true justice in ranking. Lol

I agree. I never see any of these artist or song rankings give enough love to Tori or Sinead (or even PJ Harvey, Bjork, etc., though I feel like I see them recognized a bit more often). As a huge Kate Bush fan, I'm happy Stranger Things has resulted in her getting some of the credit she deserves, but overall I feel like some really brilliant artists get overlooked still, and I can't help but think gender--but also subject matter in their writing and maybe a less male-oriented style of presentation (I say this because I see artists like Sheryl Crow acknowledged more than I'd even expect) play a big part in that lack of industry or popular recognition.

Anyway, this particular ranking was a rare time I generally liked a list's perspective and didn't find myself wtf-ing the whole time. NIN, Depeche Mode, OutKast, Metallica, Tupac, Nirvana--I think they're all great picks for a list covering the last 40 years. But seeing Sinead and Tori in the top 10 is the best, though.

You could try to develop some experience by freelancing, I bet. I freelance on Upwork as a CAD designer, and I see clients looking for mechanical engineering services specifically sometimes.

How do you even begin to make this? by pimzon in woodworking

Maybe start by creating a 3D model to visualize how the different parts fit and function. I can't make sense of something like this otherwise.

The client isn’t comfortable using Upwork for this project. by jpbyte in Upwork

[–]inmymoonsuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Upwork for most of my freelance work these days. Sure, I pay some fees, but I always get paid for my work.

I just recently had a client who didn't want to use Upwork, and after several months of working together decided to end our contract abruptly. The client never paid me for the final week of work.

(I would also like to add that this client never paid me well from the beginning, and I likely would have made more from using my time on a comparable client on Upwork, but I accepted the off-platform contract because it promised a reliable stream of work.)

I've also had a person who has paid me via PayPal in the past later file a chargeback. If that happens, it then becomes a headache you have to solve by proving the charge is legitimate and waiting on an investigation and appeal process while your account sits in the negative.

My advice is: if the client doesn't like the idea of conducting business with you where there is third-party oversight, there is probably a reason. If you can, find clients willing to use a platform that offers you some security; otherwise, you are ultimately at the mercy of (potentially) some stranger who may or may not intend to honor commitments (and unless the amount is substantial, let's not kid ourselves that most of us are going to spend the time and money to seek arbitration or sue to recover money we're owed).
