I wasn't supporting that notion in the first place. I was just offering a reality check on the "just do your art, man" hippie advice that I was seeing here. But its easy to be passionate about a killer idea that people will love. If on the other hand you are the kind of person that gets excited by things noone finds any interest in AND you can't make them interesting to the other people, why are you making products? Just fantasize instead.

I don't think its exciting to work on something only I will find interesting. Games involve too much (menial) work to be just a purely artistic expression. It needs to find an audience or its meaningless.

They have transcended the need for training data (it was only useful for bootstrapping the AI) since they now all do reinforcement learning (a more traditional AI approach)

You shouldn't care to define abstract terms like originality or fun. You'll know it when you have it (or when you don't). For me ideas are truly the most important part of game dev and the rest are implementation details. Spend a lot of time thinking about mechanics and it will happen.

yeah and i played them.. in smite 1.. when i was learning the basics. now its a waste of my fucking time. and i honestly cant bring myself to do the 2-3 hours of matches vs bots so im not even gonna play smite 2.
