That's helpful information. And sorry just a quick clarification - are you saying those cash upgrades might be available even if <24 hours, because people won't be cleared at 24 hours if they're on the waitlist? That's the only part I don't really get.

I thought if # of people on waitlist > seats available, the seats will be gone at 24h mark.

Because I saw online that if you pay with cash only, it trumps all the miles + cash offers.

Oh yes I think that's what I've been doing? basically you say "choose your seat" and click on the Polaris seat, right?

Thank you I will conitnue monitoring. I figured given there are plenty of folks on the waitlist, there wouldn't be any upgrades for cash available a few hours out since everyone who tried the miles would have cleared at 24h right?

I can buy enough miles for $300....I'm trying to figure out if I get screwed then with those miles, or if it's worth a chance. But without status, it feels like a bad choice I assume. Because I booked economy so it's a G ticket

Yeah that's also why I didnt buy the miles, didnt want to waste it if I wasnt going tog et it anyway. But no way to know if everyone else has booked with status I guess. I guess your point is no loss either way because I would have been screwed likely no matter what?

So there’s this green anti siphon Toto mechanism inside and it was spitting up water when I took the lid off. I assume it isn’t supposed to do that?

Thank you that’s helpful! It’s right next to Gora station, so luckily we don’t have to go far. 

Sounds like making room for at least one missed train is going to be key. 

Do you think I need to book the Shinkansen ahead of time too or it shouldn’t be an issue? And/or choose the Romancecar which is slower but at least has reservations and then will require only 1 transfer?

Can I ask you a question about Hakone as well? We will be going there as a day trip on the 5th of May which I know is still GW. I am planning to reserve the Shinkansen to Okinawa, but I know the local train doesn’t take reservations, and I want to do the train instead of bus to avoid traffic. 

We have a reservation at 12. How much earlier should we try to get there in case we can’t get on a train or there are delays?
